North Alabama Woodturners Boaz, Alabama Hosting Jimmy Clewes from Las Vegas, Nevada From Jimmy's Website: Jimmy is not your ordinary woodturner. Upon a first meeting one would think of him as a renegade, a free thinker and not within the stereotypical image of a woodturner. His charming British style, unending wit, creative mind and magnetic personality are only some of the attributes that make him popular in the woodturning demonstration circuit. Jimmy is on the Register of Professional Woodturners in the United Kingdom and a member of the American Association of Woodturners. He has over 22 years of experience in woodturning and woodworking. The demand for his services as a freelance demonstrator and teacher takes him all over the world including his homeland of the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Belgium, Australia. North Alabama Woodturners Dedicated to Becoming Better Woodturners and Promoting the ART of Woodturning. For more information contact any of the following NAW directors: President: Jess Walls jessw2of4@yahoo.com Vice President: Sean McCurley smccurley8154@charter.net Treasure: Tommy Hartline thomashartline@charter.net Secretary: Tom Rippel jtrswood@charter.net
Jimmy Clewes It was not long after leaving school at the age of 16, Jimmy attained an apprenticeship in engineering and decided to further his studies by attending Manchester Polytechnic in Manchester, England. He received a 2:1 Honours Degrees with special emphasis on learning 3-Dimensional Design. With that focus, he began to specialize in designing and making furniture which was influenced by Japanese tools and design. It was during his time in college that his interest in woodturning was rekindled. The combination of his college education, his limitless imagination and his professional skills was a perfect fit for Jimmy to pursue his creative abilities as a woodturner and to take that ability to the next level. When asked what drives him, he shares, My energy comes from those around me. When I can stir the creativity of one s mind, that for me is very satisfying. As with any artform, expression is only limited as one s mind and I want to raise the bar and create an awareness of the artform that has been virtually unknown to most people.
Friday's Hands-on workshop: Oct. 24, 2014, 9:00-4:00 pm Square Oriental Box A square version of my original rectangular winged box. This piece needs to be turned fast! in order to cut the corners cleanly. Tool control and position of bevel on the bowl gouge is equally important as is where to leave support in order to cut the wings. The base eventually ends up as a box and with the addition of a square cut lid with a handle the overall piece can be very aesthetic depending on proportion. I will explain in detail the whole process from start to finish. Time Permitting Colored Rimed Platter Probably my favorite turning to make!. We discuss ergonomics, shape and form. The bowl gouge, how it s sharpened and its uses. The draw cut, push cut, micro bevel, and shear cut also the rim angle and why I like mine a certain way. The coloring adds a real aesthetic quality to the piece, you will either like it or hate it!, but done well and on the right piece of wood can look awesome! Skill level/ experience: Recommended for turners of all skill levels. Location: Tommy Hartline s Turning Studio 906 Mountain View Drive, Attalla, AL Tools & Supplies: 1/4 bowl gouge 3/8 bowl gouge or (1/2 inch) Roughing out gouge Parting tool Round nose scraper 3/8 spindle gouge A variation of the above sizes would be ok Calipers, ruler, Pencil(s) Dust Mask, Sandpaper: grits Safety glasses (minimum) Face shield (Preferred) Closed toe shoes Turning smock or closed collar shirt Each turning station has the required tools if needed. Students should be appropriately dressed for wood turning and must wear closed shoes and safety glasses or face shield. Fee: $125 if paid by October 10 th (see registration form), $150 if paid after October 10 th $50.00 deposit to reserve spot in class 8 students max Lunch will be 12:00 1:00 pm. Students need to make provisions for their own lunch. Lunch delivery or pick up will be a possibility. Further information and directions will be ed to registered students by October 18th.
Demonstration: Saturday, October 25, :00 am 4:00 pm Saturday Jimmy will demo 5-6 of his favorite projects as well as take questions from the audience. Some of the projects will include a Black lacquer and Metal leaf Ash Platter, African Drum Style box with a Sterling Silver Inlay, Natural Edged End Grain Vase and an Oyster Shell Box and others depending on time. Read below what others have said about Jimmy. From Woodworld of Texas Jimmy is our students favorite instructor and in my opinion the hands down best instructor traveling the world today. Jimmy has the ability to easily convey the turning techniques he is presenting with a light and entertaining manner that keeps students mesmerized. This is one class and instructor you will never forget, as well as, measuring all others by. African Drum Style Box Calabash Bowl By Howard Cohen of the Silicon Valley Woodturners: Originally from Newcastle, UK, Jimmy now lives in Las Vegas. Jimmy is humorous and entertaining incorporating a mixture of English and now American experiences; e.g. common sense is not that common. Jimmy does not preach or insist that there is only one way to do things or that his way is better than someone else s. He will often remind us that he is simply showing us his way but that there is no right way ; he will use any method to get the desired end results. He emphasized that, unlike some demonstrators, he believes it is wrong for professional demonstrators to assume that their audiences all seek to attain their level of skill. Rather, enjoy what you are doing and don t allow someone else to presume what level of woodturning we desire. In particular, take woodturning to a level of skill that suits you. Skill level/ experience: Recommended for turners of all skill levels. Location: Mountainboro Community Center 19 South Main Street, Boaz, AL Fee: $20.00 For demo, payable at the door $5.00 For a lunch with sides drinks and dessert Lunch to be from 12:00 to 1:00 pm RSVP requested: So that we may insure sufficient food and seating will be available, please either or call Tommy Hartline if you will be attending the Saturday demo. Phone: home or cell thomashartline@charter.net Further information and driving instructions will be ed by October 18 th.
Class Schedule, Sunday, October 26, :00 am 4:00 pm Scorched Ash Bowl with Colored Lid A Simple turned Ash curved bowl with a slight turned over rim, which is then scorched and textured. The lid is colored maple, with a simple handle to compliment the simple curves of the bowl. This is a slightly more demanding project but following Jimmy's directions you can complete this project. The results are spectacular. Time permitting: Lidded Box with exotic insert and Brass ring A Turned lidded box with an insert with a brass ring as a detail. Skill level/ experience: Recommended for turners of all skill levels. Location: Tommy Hartline s Turning Studio 906 Mountain View Drive, Attalla, AL Tools & Supplies: 1/4 bowl gouge 3/8 bowl gouge or (1/2 inch) Roughing out gouge Parting tool Round nose scraper 3/8 spindle gouge A variation of the above sizes would be ok Calipers, ruler, Pencil(s) Dust Mask, Sandpaper: grits Safety glasses (minimum) Face shield (Preferred) Closed toe shoes Turning smock or closed collar shirt Each turning station has the required tools if needed.
