GEORGE AREA: CHIEF ENGINEER-R&D Grant Johnson (435) Demo of the Month February 2018 This month we had numerous presenters for the demo where each presenter gave a presentation on different methods to attach your wood turning blank to the lathe. The first presentation was by Leon Olsen where Leon discussed vacuum chucks and collet chucks. Vacuum chucks are intended to use the maximum capacity of your lathe, finish a live edge bowl bottom, or put a finished bowl back on the lathe for more work. (Continued on next page)

The next presentation was by Grant Johnson where he discussed making wood chucks by gluing up alternating pieces of flat wood (Grant likes Baltic Britch plywood).

2 Demo of the Month A good vacuum system consists of a good vacuum pump, a manifold, an adapter to the spindle, and a vacuum chuck which Leon has made all of his own vacuum chucks using instructions online. Next Collet chucks are good for holding cutters, holding sm all pieces of expensive wood for small projects, or holding wood on one end while still being able to work the other end of the p iece. The next presenters were Brent Ross and Brent Arnold discussing the multiple uses of faceplates from attaching the inside edge of bowls to attaching waste wood to the faceplate for a waste block. The next presentation was by Grant Johnson where he discussed making wood chucks by gluing up alternating pieces of flat wood (Grant likes Baltic Britch plywood). Then you drill and tap that wood for your headstock to be used as a waste block or as part of a specialty mandrel. The next presentation was by Ken Kofoed on the Kelton Woodchucker mandrel which is designed especially for chucking vases but can also be used on bowls. The last presentation was by our Prez, Will Arcularius, on 4-Jaw chucks, screw centers with a 4-Jaw chuck, Cole jaws on a 4-Jaw chuck and Longworth chucks. 4-Jaw chucks can be pricey but they are one of the most common ways to attach a piece to a lathe. 12 Meeting Information Prez Message Sometimes for the new turner just figuring out where the bowl or platter is in the piece of wood they are holding in their hand is a major event. Step two is to figure how to mount it on the lathe and the sequence that follows. When I first started turning I would watch DVDs from the library and think that it s fairly simple procedure. Then I have gone out to the shop looked at the piece of wood and turned around and gone back into the house to view the DVD again. Our demo for February was a quick overview of many of the mounting techniques use to turn a piece of wood. We covered vacuum chucks, collet chucks, 4 jaw chucks, spur drives, wood screws and face plates. We had a lot of questions and on a couple of topics not enough time to fully explain their use. Anyone what wants additional details needs only to contact me and I will put together a workshop if necessary with the appropriate expert members to assist. This is where the club workshop does an excellent job in assisting members. Do take advantage of the shop and all the wood that has been prepped for the member. We do have quite a bit of wet wood to rough turn. If you haven t done any wet turning you are in for a very pleasant surprise. It s fast and easy and you ll love the long lengths of shavings that come off the project.
