2 OPENING COMMENTS: Cost of 10 x 10 space is $ was told by event contact we could have 10 x 20 for same price. Ralph is looking into the logistics. Christmas Party scheduled for December 6th. More info to follow. President Ralph Callander opened the meeting at 7:00PM. We get gift certificates from Craft Supply and Ralph encouraged us to purchase from them. Their web site is Ralph encourages everyone to join AAW, and said the magazine alone is worth it. All old issues can be found online for members. AAW membership and information can be found at There will be an additional drawings added to the 50/50 and Bring Back for some wood donated to the Guild. The wood is Bahama Strongback and Gulf Licaria. OLD BUSINESS: We are looking for a volunteer to take over the Librarian duties for the Guilds DVDs. If we cannot find a person to take of the duties of Jack Sawyer (Jack videos and edits our monthly demos for the purpose of adding to our website). One recommendation is to raffle off the DVDs to Bring Back participants. NEW BUSINESS: Next Guild event will be the Ramble at Fairchild Botanical Gardens. November 9th - 11th. Contact Helen Fitzgerald if you are volunteering for the - setup, takedown, sales, and Demonstration. December 8th & 9th event - Redland Heritage Festival at Fruit & Spice park. New Event March 31st Deering Estate Seafood Festival March Page - 1 Dues are $30.00 for an individual members and $40.00 for family, which include a family that is a Turner. 3 BRING BACK & 50/50: The Bring-Back is not a competition, bring what you turned before the next meeting or bring in a piece from your shelf. 8 Members out of 23 attending participated in Octobers Bring Back. Joe Dion won a $10.00 Craft Supply gift certificate for the Bring/Back raffle. Dave Freundlich, Pat Callaway, Don Van de Hei, and A.J. West won Exotic wood. Paul Provost gave Jack Sawyer a Mahogany Bowl and received a $10.00 gift certificate from Craft Supply. Mike Crisler was given a $10 gift certificate from Craft Supply for his Demo. Roberto Pascual won a $10 gift certificate from Craft Supply in the second Bring-Back drawing.. 50/50 Mike Crisler won $38.00, the Guild received $37.00 for its treasury. Please bring only $1.00 and $5.00 dollar bills for the 50/50 Tens and Twenty make it difficult to make change. Freddy Strano, Mike Crisler, Mike Wilcock, and Pat Callaway won Exotic wood WORKSHOP: The next workshop will be on November 17th, 2018 from 9 to noon at Waldo s SW 187 Avenue, Miami. No children under 10. Children 10 or older who are interested in woodturning are welcome with a parent. Bring a N-95 dust mask to the workshop if you plan to turn. Also your tools and face shield. SAFETY: A dust mask should be used for any sanding on the lathe, sharpening tools, etc. A mask should also be used when grinding tools. Powdered metal is as bad for your lungs as sawdust is. When using CA glue do not glue yourself to something you cannot pick up. Know where acetone or fingernail polish remover is in case of accidentally gluing of yourself to something. The fumes are nasty, wear a mask. November Demonstration: Segmented Salad Bowl Mike Crisler My turning experience show bud vase and spindle gouge from the 70 s. This demo may appear to be done in the wrong order. I ll explain when I finish! Why go to this trouble for a bowl? Will be a Once Turned Bowl vs. a wet wood blank that may need to dry and most likely warp and need further work. Good when you need it soon! Attractive and functional, No cross or end grain to deal with. Easy to do with beginners tools! Maintainable- once they are turned -just remount, steel wool, more finish. Repeat Segmented Turing is good for practical items lamps, salad bowls, dog bowl holders, flowerpots, lamps or any project that requires a large turning. Show small Strips vs. a waxed bowl blank. At an average of $8 board foot, about $4.50 total for lumber used for the segmented bowl. Demo: Use and construction of glue block Lock nut vs. plain 1 x 8 TPI Nut (mount proper glue block) Page - 2

4 Parting off partially complete bowl, using Cole Jaws and reverse chucking adapter Turn around while on chuck, saw or part off the protruding centering dowel Drill (2 1/8 Forstner Bit) and turn for internal mortise, will be left there for future refinishing as finish wears thin Brand, sand and bevel base and final finish outside (while in Cole Jaws). Remove from Cole Jaws and chuck up in mortise. Final finish the inside. Use WATCO Butcher Block Oil, available at Lowe s Making the segments: Set up chop saw using GREENIE and mica alignment shims Using gauge, set up to cut Red Oak segments. Discussed other cutting methods single and double cut sleds for table and band saws. The portable saw was purchased at Lowes, good Christmas gift for $99-10% The top mark and geometry of Misalignment compensation is critical. Sand to make flat or glue up and face off. Parallel faces are critical. Show clamp and centering shims and tape glue up. Use of Solid or segmented bottom difficulty in centering it. 3-jaw chuck to center bottom piece (12 sides don t work well on a 4 jaw chuck ) Drill for centering walnut ½ dowel bearing dowel from Rockler or DIY Carefully glue in dowel and press in with tailstock and reverse chucking adapter Glue maple bottom to prepared glue block. Only around the edge! Use $1000 bar clamp to attach oak ring to base. Shop made centering cone (stress stock prep). Let tack and continue with other rings and centering cones. MENTORING: Feel free to ask around for help. Most members are willing to help others with information that can be given over the phone or even hands-on, should anyone need help.
