2 Gary Venema brought an old Craftsman Dust Collector, see him after the meeting if you are interested. Ralph has received some exotic wood which he will divide into pieces to be raffled off at a Workshop. An will be sent out with the date of the raffle. The wood includes Bahama Strongbark, Gulf Licaria, and Crabwood. The person donating the wood also has Blackwood for sale. OPENING COMMENTS: President, Ralph Callander opened the meeting at 7:00PM. He reminded us that dues for 2018 are due at the beginning of the year: today 14our of 72 members have not paid, Check only. Please send your check to Gary Venema Guild Treasurer A reminder of past dues will be sent out and then if payment is not received you will be removed from our Roster and list. We get gift certificates from Craft Supply and Ralph encouraged us to purchase from them.. Their web sites are NEW BUSINESS: 50 members and families attended this years Picnic on April 28th. Shorty's Ribs provided the Ribs, Chicken and all the fixings. Members provided Appetizers and Desert. Pete Gonzalez Laminated, a much needed Tent assembly instructions. Our donation of $88.00 was given to the Native Plant Society from sales. We have been invited back next year in March. Next Guild event will be the Ramble at Fairchild Botanical Gardens. Dates not posted as yet. Homestead Center for the Arts had a fundraiser on April 20th spotlighting most of their Affiliates and allowing them to display and sell their items. We are one of their Affiliates. They sent a Photographer to Joe Dion s house to tape him demonstrating Woodturning. Joe Dion attended the event and gave a brief talk. OLD BUSINESS: Gary reported that we have $ in the bank. The following members volunteered to do demonstrations during 2018: June- Gary Venema and David Freundlich. 5 More members are needed tfor demonstrations. Children 10 or older who are interested in woodturning are welcome with a parent. Bring a N-95 dust mask to the workshop if you plan to turn. Also your tools and face shield. SAFETY: A dust mask should be used for any sanding on the lathe, sharpening tools, etc. A mask should also be used when grinding tools. Powdered metal is as bad for your lungs as sawdust is. When using CA glue do not glue yourself to something you cannot pick up. Know where acetone or fingernail polish remover is in case of accidentally gluing of yourself to something. The fumes are nasty, wear a mask. May Demo: David Piper - Using a MDF Rose Engine Lathe Use a Rose Engine built from plans by Jon Magill using Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). ( ose_engine_files/mdfconstruction_v6.pdf). A rose engine differs from other lathes in many ways, but the biggest difference is that the headstock rocks back and forth ticles/mdfoverview.pdf By controlling this rocking motion with a bearing riding against a Rosette, a cam-like-disk you can cut many different patterns on a turned piece of wood, metal, or acrylic. Iam using a MDF Rose-Engine built by Barrie Reed; the commercial Rose-Engines go for over $20,000. Page - 2

4 I have made 3 modifications to the Lathe assembly making the process easier. Added a BBQ rotisserie motor (Bracket by Ralph) to replace the hand crank. This makes for a smoother consistent cut. Added a Router Speed Control switch to slow down the cutter motor speed. High speed causes burning of the wood. Replaced the tube belts with Link- Belts. Link-Belts require less maintenance. MENTORING: Feel free to ask around for help. Most members are willing to help others with information that can be given over the phone or even hands-on, should anyone need help. ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE! Mentors: Joe Dion Homestead Joe Roig Kendall There are two types of cuts using a Rose- Engine. An end cut and side cut (which is used most of the time). I started by making 3 round disks using each Rosette cutting from Left-to-center and Right-to-center in order to get familiar with what Rosette cre ates a specific pattern. Depending on the direction L-C or R-C the pattern is different. I then placed a picture of each patten on the Rosette, for future reference. The Rosette also has several small holes along the side. By moving a pin from hole to hole allows limitless patterns on the turned item. Boxes, bottle stoppers to bowls can be used on a Rose-Engine Lathe using the chuck you used on your wood lathe. There is a Diameter and depth restriction, which is dictated by the Rose-engine Lathe. I used a YO-YO (turned by Joe Self) for the demonstration. Finished the Yo-Yo with Dick Blick India Ink. After the Yo-Yo is complete and I use a gloss finish. The first pass was L-C, Star Pattern. The second pass was R-C Flower Petal pattern. The edge of the Yo-Yo was also turned. The Yo-Yo was turned over and the following steps were repeated. If there are and traces of dust fuzz make another pass with a light cut until the surface is clean. A stiff brush with the lathe spinning at high speed will remove the fuzz. No sanding required.
