1 Promoting the Art And Craft Of Woodturning PBCW News Volume 11, Issue 4 : April 2013 PBCW April Meeting will be held at Okeeheelee Nature Center 4/27 Inside This Issue: Coming Events 6 Scholarships 6 Gallery 3-5 Mounts Spring Show and Sale April Minutes From The March Meeting Thirty six people attended the PBCW s March meeting which started with president Tim Rowe s call for order at 9:15 AM on the 23rd. Geoff Wilson was our demonstrator for the March meeting. Geoff showed how he inlays minerals into his turnings. This is a skill that Geoff learned at a workshop he attended with the aid of a scholarship from the PBCW. Anyone interested in attending a qualifying workshop should refer to the last page of this newsletter for an application. All applicants must be current AAW members because they will be required to perform one or more demonstrations to pass on to the club what they have learned. Geoff discussed the properties of minerals that make them more or less suitable for use in woodturnings. Color, reflectivity and hardness are all important in the selection of the proper minerals to add to (Continued on page 2) This Saturday and Sunday April 27 and 28 the members of the PBCW will take part in the Mounts Spring Show and Sale. This show and the Fall Mounts Sale represent the two biggest public events for the PBCW each year. The show runs from at 9AM to 5PM each day. In addition to a presentation of some of the finest finished woodturnings anywhere, this show also features continuous woodturning demonstrations by PBCW members. Members interested in participating in this event or any PBCW show and sale should contact the show chairman Gerhard Schwenke. All those attending this month s meeting at Okeeheelee Nature Center are encouraged to visit the show at Mounts Botanical Garden before they return home. Wednesday Workshops Those attending the Wednesday workshops are requested to pay special attention to the following: If you plan to attend respond to the weekly invitation at least two days prior to the event. Do not arrive before the beginning of the workshop at 6:30 PM. Park in the designated areas only. Remember these workshops are held in Tim s place of business. Tim has volunteered this space and his time. Do not place extra burdens on him by interfering with his ability to run his and earn a living. Members are reminded that the coffee and donuts served at every meeting cost the club about $45 per month. If you partake, leave a little something in the donations cup, so that we can continue to enjoy them. 2 (Continued from page 1) your woodturnings. Geoff recommends the use of minerals with a hardness of 3-5 on the Mohs scale. Geoff recommended Great South Gem and Minerals as a source of raw materials. Geoff also recommended using Maple or Bloodwood for the base turning to inlay minerals into. These and similar woods are best according to Geoff because they are not oily, not too soft and do not have open grain that would soak March Minutes (contd.) up the cyanoacrylate glue used to hold the minerals and to fill the gaps between the granules. Geoff showed the club how he uses a hammer and newspaper to crush the minerals to usable size. A coffee grinder can also be used to reduce the minerals still further. He likes to cut grooves on the lathe about 3/16 of an inch deep in the surface of the wood to fill with the minerals. Goeff also mentioned the use of Inlace pre prepared inlay materials. This product has an epoxy base mixed with a colored mineral filler. When mixed it can be poured and spread into cavities in the wood surface. It is available fro Inlace.com. After the demonstration and a short break Tim made several announcements of interest to club members. On Saturday, October 26 Stuart Batty will demonstrate for the PBCW. The AAW national Symposium will be held in Tampa on June This is the best opportunity Florida woodturners will have to take part in this event for the foreseeable future. The event gathers some of the finest artists and woodturnings from around the world in one place for three days of demonstrations, banquets, vendor exhibits and gallery exhibitions. Register now if you plan to attend. If 25 members register the club will receive three free registrations as a gift. Treasurer Bruce Williams announced that the club has in the general fund and $ in the Otto Dundr Memorial Education fund. He also stated that the club broke even on the Alan Lacer demonstration and workshops. The club also acquired a set of Alan Lacer videos. The club also purchased a new grinder this winter. (Continued from page 2) time in his shop. These classes run for 8 weeks following the outline established by Bill Jones. The price for the entire course is $100. John Buso will organize and conduct the PBCW demonstrations at Okeeheelee Nature Center on earth day April 13 from 9AM to 3PM. Discussion of problems with the Wednesday workshops ensued. See the article on page 1 for more information. There was discussion of the possibility of renting a location to hold workshops and charging admission to them to help defray the cost. It was suggested that we should create a list of those willing to mentor and postit on the web site. The winner of the 50/50 raffle was Loren Wolfe who donated the winnings back to the club. Tim Rowe won the Bring Back raffle and received a set of salt and pepper shakers from Dan Lague.

To apply for a grant simply complete a grant application and give it to a member of the education committee. The education committee members are: Bill Jones, Brian Rosencrantz and Al Gruntwagin. In return for the aid the scholarship winner must agree to provide one or two demonstrations for the club at regular meetings during the year following attendance at the course.
