2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE As I sit down to write this message I am thinking about the catheterization to check the arteries around my wife s heart that will be done tomorrow, Wednesday afternoon. The surgeon wants to check them before he does surgery to repair a leaking valve. The surgery is not scheduled yet but will probably be within the first two weeks of October. I should know by the meeting date. She feels fine right now and hopefully will recover quickly. At the last meeting we discussed a Saturday workshop during October. I was able to contact Waldo to see if we could use his shop and he is available any Saturday in October. Check your calendar to see if there are conflicts so we can pick a date. The Fairchild Ramble is coming up Nov and will be three days this year. If you don t have a big stock of turnings for sale you still have a few weeks to get out and finish some up. Bob Hazel has already sent the Ramble info out and will have extras at the meeting. I forwarded some s from AAW this past week and had some of them come back because of address problems. Gary is updating our membership list so we all need to check the list at the meeting to make sure that all the information is current before it is sent out. I am sure that David and the nominating committee are hard at work putting together a list of next year s officers. Being an officer is not that difficult and they would be very happy if you said yes the first time they called. Think about it and then see David. That s all for now. See you at the meeting. Don GUESTS: Paul Penny Donna Kurtz David Piper Attendance: 34 OLD BUSINESS Don Vande Hei opened the meeting by welcoming the three guests to the meeting and then explaining the Bring Back which is encouraged for ALL members to participate in, regardless of skill level. It is an activity within the guild to get members to challenge themselves and turn to the best of their abilities. Don then mentioned that he had three $10 discount tickets for Craft Supplies USA which would be raffled off during the bring back. Craft Supplies sent a letter to the guild. Don read an excerpt from the letter which explained how Craft Supplies has provided over $100,000 to woodturning organizations throughout the country. The promotional code for discounted Craft Supplies purchases is clubmem. The company is also offering a group discount of 13% to the guild but with a caveat: $1,000 minimum order. If you are interested in a group purchase, contact Don Vande Hei or any other board member so as to hasten this group purchase to receive the discount. NEW BUSINESS The AAW membership renewal period has begun. The AAW now publishes the magazine 6 times/year. The magazine is an excellent resource for information and news happening in woodturning. The AAW insurance is also included in the membership. Several handouts for upcoming woodturning symposiums were available at the front table: 1) The 2010 Florida Woodturning Symposium, to be held January at the Lake Yale Baptist Convention Center. 3 2) The 11 th annual Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposium, held September 12 th 13 th, held in Loveland, Col. 3) The 2009 North Carolina Woodturning Symposium, to be held October at the Greensboro Coliseum, Greensboro, NC. 4) The Georgia Association of Woodturners' 14th annual woodturning symposium, held in Helen, Ga. Don lead a brief discussion on the beetle infestation of Avocado Trees occuring in North Florida. He showed a picture of a tree infected by beetles. The beetles attack the tree, and then the tree becomes prone to infection by a fungus. So far, there is no beetle infestation in South Dade County. Look for trees with a wilt, which indicates possible infestation. The photo tent was set up for picture taking. Members were encouraged to use the opportunity to photograph their turnings. Don mentioned that the guild needs someone to take responsibility for the tent setup on a regular basis. It was suggested that this be set up on a rotational basis, possibly using a sign-up sheet. There was a general consensus that a rotation was the best solution. David Freundlich again volunteered to head up the recruiting efforts for a new slate of officers for the coming year. His expertise and efforts in this are appreciated. Penn State Industries is currently having a sale of up to 25% off: Ramble Update A discussion of the upcoming Ramble was lead by Ramble coordinator Bob Hazel; The Ramble will be held Friday, November 20 th, through Sunday, November 22 nd. Setup will be on Thursday, November 19 th around 1-1:30 pm. Lists will be made available for work, which includes demos, sales tent, bag and tag, and the sales desk help. These lists will be available at the next two meeting. Documents, including the Ramble Sales Log, have been ed. Hard copies will also be available at the next meeting although all vendors are encouraged to fill out the sales log on their computer. The log can thus be legible, changes can easily be made, and multiple copies then printed. Make sure to have at least three copies available; one for the sales desk, one for the presentation committee, and one for yourself. Remember, 30% of sales goes to Fairchild Gardens. Price your pieces accordingly. The guild will have its two lathes, and other turners can also bring their own machines. Remember to bring you tools and some blanks for turning. The possibility of an upcoming Saturday workshop at Waldo s was discussed. With the advent of cooler weather, hopefully in October, such a workshop will be discussed and scheduled at an upcoming meeting. SEPTEMBER DEMO The September demo, Turning Collars and Inserts, was presented by Bob Hazel who has a wealth of experience in this area. He began the demo using a Jacaranda wood blank, using a ¼ screw chuck. Basically, he makes a small tenon on the blank, and then another tenon at the other end, using a gauge to measure the diameter of the hole of the vessel that the collar is going to insert into.when turning the blank, you want to taper the collar to fit the shape of the vessel. Bob proceeds to turn the part that fits into the vessel first. He then takes it down to the proper diameter, constantly checking with the gauge, and then hollows the collar. Details of this demo have been described in a previous newsletter. BRING BACK The bring back, won by Tom Cross, was an Albizia vessel turned end grain by Joe Roig. The vessel was finished in lacquer. 4 SFWG WOOD SAMPLE COLLECTION Brian Seguin is now the custodian of the guilds wood sample collection. If any members obtain a species of wood that is not represented in the collection, particularly of native species, they should call Brian to see if he wants it. Ideally, the piece should be a natural round (log section) 5" in diameter or greater; 6" in length is sufficient. For rare species, less than ideal samples will be considered.
