Volume 16, Issue 8 August, 2007 August Demo By Vera Pfifferling T he demo last month was Turning a Sphere by Beau Bunn.

From there he demonstrated how to crate the jam chuck needed to hold the sphere while turning it.

He turned out the center; bowl like, to accept the rough sphere until it seated well enough to be held safely.

He demonstrated how to begin with the wood between centers, turning a cylinder, marking the blank, and then creating the rough sphere. From there he demonstrated how to crate the jam chuck needed to hold the sphere while turning it. He chooses a piece of green wood that is larger than the sphere he was turning in order to accommodate the size. He turned out the center; bowl like, to accept the rough sphere until it seated well enough to be held safely. Once the sphere was half turned he rotated the semi-turned sphere to turn the other side, adjusting the jam chuck to fit. Once both halves were turned he sanded it to a smooth finish by sanding half, rotating 90 degrees, sanding, then rotating 90 degrees again. Beau said that It is a challenging piece to turn but once it is learned the results can be spectacular. And of course, Beau did a spectacular job!

The space provided for us by the NC Craft Center worked well. Beau Bunn did an excellent demonstration turning a sphere. The new camera mount that Alan Leland build worked very quilt well under the guidance of Bob Vern. I am still looking for volunteers to help at the upcoming Symposium in Greensboro, Oct 5-7. Please let Andy Gunning know if you would be available to help at the Symposium. Our guild is responsible for the set up and maintenance of one of the demonstration rooms. We need help, setting up the room, operating the camera for each demonstrator, cleaning up after each demonstration, and finally removing all equipment and cleaning the room at the completion of the Symposium. I would like to spread the work among as volunteers as possible so that everyone will have plenty of time to enjoy the Symposium. Thanks, Frank VP s Message ord is that W Beau Bunn did an excellent demonstration last month on turning large spheres. Not only did he make it hard on himself by turning a Manzaneta root burl sphere, but there was the new meeting place to deal with and to top it off we were not sure if there was going to be 220 power available to run the Chapters Oneway Lathe. I heard all went well and I would like to thank Beau for sharing his talent with us. It was also reported to me that the video was the best ever. So, thanks to Bob Verne for taking over the video and doing an excellent job. It is time to think about our chapter s board of directors. We would appreciate any volunteers and nominations for new board members. If you are interested in taking a more active roll in the chapter, please let me know ASAP. As our chapter relies on the participation of its members to be successful, we are in search of new and fresh ides and most importantly new participants to fill several board positions. Remember the chapter is only as strong as the members that are willing to share their time, expertise and skills to make it a fun and enjoyable organization. I will not be at this month s meeting, so Frank can pass the names of the potential board members on to me. I will be at the John C. Campbell Folk School this month teaching a fundamentals class and next month I will miss the monthly meeting as I will be assisting Frank Penta in his platter class. So please step up and volunteer to help out of better yet take an active roll in running the Chapter. My thanks to out to all who help out at the meetings and at our special events. This month s demonstrators will be Bob Reuss and Steve Driggers. They will present a short slide presentation on the class they attended at Arrowmont, under the instruction of Christian Burchard. After the slide presentation, they turn a piece of Madrone and all will be amazed as it changes shape and moves. Madrone is a very unstable wood. This will be a meeting that you will not miss. While at the AAW Symposium in Portland I was videographer for Christian Burchard s rotation and was amazed at how quickly the Madrone piece he was turning changed shape. Madrone is a tricky wood to work with, so the techniques that Bob & Steve will be sharing with us will be most enlightening. Thanks, Alan

Christian lives in Oregon, studied furniture making in Germany and attended art school in the US. He has been a professional wood turner for many years. His work is in several major collections and a number of art museums. He is best known for his work with madrone burl including basket forms and ball forms. In recent years he has also been doing bowls and wall hangings from thin slabs of madrone allowed to dry then bleached. Madrone is native to the Pacific Northwest and the burl grows under ground with the roots around and sometimes extending from it. The burls can be as large as a Volkswagen. Christian was assisted by Bob Doop who is an excellent turner and a professional yacht captain from Washington State. Together they provided an informative and entertaining week of demonstrations, slide shows, design discussions and personal assistance. Madrone Baskets by Christian Burchard and Bob Reuss End of Class Critique by Christian (larger one in the right rear) Madrone has no orderly internal structure so pieces are turned thin, wet and fast then repeatedly microwaved to get amazing deformations. Christian likes to put a series of circumferential grooves on the pieces starting close together at the top and widening as you go down. They are turned with a gourd bottom (no foot). He sometimes sandblasts or bleaches the finished pieces and usually uses a propane torch to get a dark rim on the top prior to using an oil finish.

However, because of the cabinet's location relative to the presentation area, (it s down the corridor about 30 feet, then to your left) the library will only be open 1/2 hour before the meeting starts, and 1/2 hour after the meeting ends. It will not be open during the break. Intermediate Woodturning Projects, The Best of Woodturning Magazine The addition this month is from The Best of Woodturning Magazine and is titled, Intermediate Woodturning Projects. It includes 29 super articles. One that caught my eye is about creating decorative Rhyton vases which are small and light enough to serve as Christmas tree ornaments. But Chet, I thought you said it was food for thought!
