Safety Notes - by Roy Fisher Don Evans, Targa/African Blackwood 1 1/2 X 8 October is fire safety month, so let s get a head start on making sure our shops are safe. Do you have at least one fire extinguisher in your shop? Is it clutter free and easily accessible? When was the last time you tripped the unit upside down and shook it? When was the last time you had the fire extinguisher recharged? Did you know that most fire safety companies will not recharge the units with a plastic fitting head? (I just found that out) They will not guarantee the recharge for fear of the plastic seal leaking. Take a few minutes and check your fire extinguisher. You can buy a new 2 1/2 pound capacity Kidde ABC Dry Chemical unit (model UN 1044) with a metal head fitting and a mounting bracket for about $20.00.

2 PAGE 2 THE TRIANGLE WOODTURNER VOLUME 11, ISSUE 9 President s Message Reports are that everyone enjoyed Bruce Hoover's demonstration. I'm glad we had the opportunity to have Bruce at one of our regular meetings. He always does a good job and offers something for most aspects of turning. The Board has been discussing ways to bring Internationally known Turners for next years programs. We hope to have more details in the near future. The Board has also decided to purchase Lanyards for our Badges. They should be easier to wear if we don't have to attach them to our clothing. We will get the Badge issue resolved soon. The Internet Newsletter access has had a few glitches, so we will send notification to remind members that the latest issue is available. The printing and mailing is still an issue, so the board has discussed increasing the dues by a $1 per month for those who require a hard copy. Annual elections are required in November, so if you would like to become a Board Member or would like to nominate someone (with their consent) please contact any Board Member. The terms of Dave Brink and Alan Leland expire this year. have inventory sheets available at the September meeting. Elvie Jackson and myself will handle the exhibition. The sales commission is 30%. The Chapel Hill Museum is having an exhibition titled "Trade Secrets Artisans Reveal the Mysteries of their Craft" from September 26 th thru the end of the year. We have been invited to do a turning demonstration and display the tools and materials of the craft. We also have been invited to place some Turned pieces in the Museum store. I will have inventory sheets available at the September meeting. Alan Leland and Frank Penta will handle the exhibition. The sales commission is 40%. Hope you'll come to see Bill Johnston's demonstration, it's always great. Al Basham The exhibition and sale at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences is October 21 st thru December 1 st. This is an important exhibition for us as a group. All pieces will be chosen by the exhibition committee, so please submit your best work. There will be a reception for the participating Turners on October 24 th from 6:00 to 8:00PM. We will need your inventory sheets by October 1 st and your pieces by October 17 th. I will John Hill thanks Al Basham for the TWNC contribution and support of the Carolina Mountain Woodturners TWNC Membership is $30/year with joint AAW membership required. 3 VOLUME 11, ISSUE 9 THE TRIANGLE WOODTURNER PAGE 3 Finally the surface should be ready for sanding. Bruce outlined many tips on sanding techniques including using an angled drill instead of a regular drill when power sanding with a mandrel. It is used at a relatively slow speed and is more comfortably held upside down. A soft conversion pad can be used on punky or softer woods. A self powered sander, basically a mandrel mounted on a stick, performs the same job as a drill based sander with less noise and, strangely, fewer radial scratches. Also, a self-powered sander can be held against a tool rest for support. A random orbital sander is another great way to eliminate small scratches left by power sanding. Make sure you get variable speed control as it is best used at slow speeds. Random orbital sanders are always used with the lathe turned off. A detail random orbital sander with a triangular sanding pad can be useful in tight spaces such as against a 90-degree internal edge. Demonstration by Bruce Hoover - Innovative Sanding Techniques This month our demonstrator was Bruce Hoover, a full-time woodturner from Bloxom, Virginia. Bruce has been turning for seven years and has developed a vast knowledge and expertise in preparing his turnings for a fine finish. He has learned that a truly great finish can only be done on top of a smooth surface; and turnings sell faster and for more money the finer the surface is. For the rest of us, this translates to a more beautiful woodturning. Bruce started by telling us that properly executed sanding techniques work like a precision instrument. One area where Bruce is a true innovator is in using extensions with either mandrels or static sanding pads. He has invented a much thicker and more substantial extender that is usually used with a drill. The thin extensions sold in most wood working catalogs are weak and flex too much. His extensions have sleeves that slide over the drill head. He uses extensions in varying lengths from 12 to over 30. These are great for sanding inside vases and deep hollow forms. Because mandrels wear out primarily on the edge, a used-up 3 mandrel can be cut down to either 2 or 1 to save cost. Also, worn out 3 sanding disks can have the last inch cut into serrations and folded over a 2 or 1 mandrel. This prevents the familiar digin caused by the edge of sanding pads. As an alternative, a forceps can hold folded sandpaper to clean up trouble spots inside vessels. Dust collection is a necessary part of your sanding equipment. The common nuisance mask made from paper found at most hardware and department stores is close to using nothing. At a minimum the Dust B Gone mask or spray respirators used for spraying lacquer filter out most dust and are a good first level of protection. A much more effective solution is a body shop respirator. A dust collector with its hose close to your woodturning is an effective way to remove most of the dust. A great add-on to remove airborne particles is an overhead shop filter that can re-circulate all the air in your shop several times each hour. There are times when sanding by hand is necessary. When using individual sanding sheets, Scotch 3M sanding pads make an excellent backer pad with the fine or extra-fine grit side facing the back of the sandpaper. Bruce markets a glove with sewn in Velcro strips on both the front and back of the fingertips that holds sanding disks. This glove reduces the fatigue of grasping the sandpaper and holding it tight enough not to spin off. Abralore sanding pads from Mirka work well for final sanding as does sheet steel wool. Easy Sand steel wool sheets are woven very tightly and don t break apart nearly as easily as inexpensive steel wool. Prior to sanding, small ripples on the surface can be eliminated by using a cabinet scraper by using the burr on the edge to shear scrape the surface. The cabinet scraper is held against the surface such that any grabs will pull the scraper away from the piece. A tool rest is not used and the scraper is held at roughly a 45-degree angle. A mechanics inspection light with a flexible arm held against the surface is a great way to spot small flaws on the surface. Bruce s demo was highly enjoyable and, as you can see from the length of this write up, very informational. I m sure that everyone left with not only a better understanding of sanding, but also a handful of new sanding tips and tricks. Thanks Bruce for a great demo! Reported by David Brink

Jackson Bill Johnston will be our featured demonstrator for our September meeting. He will show us how he turns Christmas tree ornaments. Bill does an outstanding demonstration no matter what he turns, so don t miss this meeting. Bruce Hoover, from Bloxom, Virginia, did an outstanding demonstration on sanding at our August meeting. Bruce showed us the works from A to Z about sanding. His inventions and aids for sanding were very interesting and quite useful. Everyone should have one of his sanding gloves. His demonstration was fun, educational, and interesting. Many thanks go to Bruce for a job well done. If anyone wants to order any of Bruce s products, feel free to call him at Breakout sessions will be the order of business for October as well as our regular monthly meeting. We need some volunteers to host the sessions. This will be a great time for turners to practice demonstration skills and share turning ideas and methods as well as the participants to get some hands on experience. Let Elvie know if you would like to host a session. Don t be bashful. We need some new hosts to step forward and give the old hosts a break. These sessions are always fun as well as educational to the participants and hosts. November will be our annual Christmas Ornament challenge. We ask everyone to turn an ornament and donate it to the club so it can be raffled at the December Christmas party. Jackson s Tree Service December will be our annual Christmas party and ornament raffle. Dave Brink will demonstrate at our January 2003 meeting. Brooks Johnston will demonstrate box turning at our February 2003 meeting. I hope to see everyone at the September meeting. In the meantime, keep the chips flying and be safe!
