2 Page 2 Tidewater Turner President s Note Mentoring Program Al Keibert President Happy New Year to all! I m not sure how many of our members make New Years Resolutions and keep them but here are a few that you might want to try: Become an active member of the AAW. Sign up for a turning class with the Club. Volunteer to help the club this year. Volunteer to help at the Annual AAW Symposium in Richmond (June 2008). Write an article for the newsletter. Help with the club s website. Provide photo s for newsletter/ website. The Club classes are up and running at full capacity. I would like to see some of the results turn up at Show & Tell and perhaps the club will gain a new demonstrator or two. Jerry Whitehurst, Cliff Guard, Dwight Bullock and Mike Dennis are some of the instructors. Thanks Jerry for getting this up and running. Greg Barco has cut two fresh maple trees into slabs for the club classes. Thank you Greg for donating your time and effort for the club, sure was some good looking wood in those slabs!! February s Show and Tell Bring in your first turning, no matter how you feel about them. It will be quite interesting to see what we all bring in! Dave Hout s March Metal Spinning class seems to be of interest. We filled the class in no time at all. Look for more opportunities for classes with some World Class Turners in the near future. As a note, most turners slow down in the winter due to heating issues. Might be a good time to get some of that equipment maintenance/ clean up we all have been putting off all year. Lastly, January s meeting is a Turn-a-thon, no Show and Tell or Wood Raffle. Come out and get a TURN at using a tool you might not have worked with yet. See you there!! Al Kiebert Interested in i m p r o v i n g your woodturning skills or maybe learn a new technique? How about leaning to use a new tool. Contact Ray Kallman at (757) or rkallman1@cox.net and we ll connect you up with a mentor. It doesn t matter if you are a new turner or an experienced turner. In our mentor program, we connect turners who d like to work together to improve their skills. 4 Page 4 Tidewater Turner Ebonizing Rust Stain This article originally appeared at It can be difficult for some craftsmen to stain a project made from a beautiful hardwood like walnut. A purist might say that staining any wood is unnatural and thoughtless. Sometimes though, a wood requires stain to bring out its hidden beauty. And as woodworkers, most of us appreciate the beauty of grain in wood and it s uncommon for us to hide it. Wouldn t it be nice to see this inner beauty develop without a can of commercial stain? A few household ingredients will create a potent chemical stain that will profoundly change the color of a wood with a high tannin content... most notably, oak and walnut. Don t forget to wear rubber gloves and eye protection! Ingredients: Apple cider vinegar Steel wool pad 1 tablespoon of salt Ordinary nails (not galvanized) A cup of water in a spray bottle You will need a bucket or some other means to contain the mixture. Unroll the steel wool pad and place it in the bucket. Toss in a few old nails or any other rusted items you many have. Next, place 1 tablespoon of salt into a spray bottle and add a cup of water. Shake the bottle until most of the salt has dissolved. Spray the steel wool and nails with this mixture until the bottle is empty. Allow this to sit for a few days. It may be necessary to lightly spray the steel wool and nails every other day with plain water to promote as much rust buildup as possible. Why plain water? As the water evaporates, the salt will remain on the pad and nails You will want the steel wool pad to lose at least 75% of its consistency before continuing. The longer you can wait for rust, the better. Let the water completely evaporate before doing anything with the rust. If you are satisfied that you have an ample supply of rust, carefully mix in a cup of apple cider vinegar (ordinary vinegar won t work as well). Allow this to set up for 10 minutes then dump the mixture into a jar through a paint strainer Prepare your project There will be a tendency for this stain to raise the grain of the wood. In certain situations, it may be preferable to wipe down your project with a wet rag to raise the grain, allow the surface to dry, and sand it lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Apply the stain Apply the stain with a foam paintbrush (available at most craft stores). Within seconds, you will see the chemical reaction take place. Walnut s brown will change to black almost immediately. On oak, the result will be interesting but less dramatic. After the coat of stain has dried, sand the project again and apply another coat. Walnut typically requires 2 coats and oak may require 3 or more. Sanding will become less necessary with each additional coat as long as you do not sand too much from the surface. The mixture will remain somewhat potent if kept in a sealed glass jar. Within a year though, the chemical will start to turn green and the results will not be as astounding. A coat of Minwax Ebony stain on top of this mixture will further deepen the color and give you a very, very deep black colour. Walnut will now look like ebony. The tremendous change in walnut will open up a whole new world of wood combinations. How about ebonized walnut and unstained cherry? Or how about an ebonized walnut bowl or vase? Joe Woodworker.com Ebonized walnut base

5 Volume 9, Issue 1 Page 5 Beginners Corner Dealing with End Grain Tearout Even more experienced turners run into problems with torn grain areas especially when the wood is dry, soft or punky. When this occurs the first best solution is to sharpen your tools and go over the area again using light cuts. If you are using a scraper, try shear scraping to make fine cuts. If that doesn t solve the problem, try using paste floor wax. Just rub a small amount of paste wax into the stubborn area and again go over the area using light cuts with a sharpened tool. The wax will help stiffen the wood fibers and they will cut easier. Ray Kallman Product Review... Oneway Dual Bearing Live Center This month s new product review is really a discussion on a turning accessory that has been around for quite some time. The Oneway dual bearing live center hit the market years ago when Oneway began using them on their line of lathes. These live centers have really changed the way many turners plan and complete their projects. Jet also supplies a live center that for all practical purposes is identical to the Oneway product. First of all, the live center has a dual set of bearings. These bearings spread the load over a larger area than single bearing centers which greatly extend the life of this live center. Second, and probably the best feature is the unique design that allows for a huge number of configurations allowing you to adapt to numerous turning challenges. The live center can be used with the full point center that measures almost across the base. Remove this full point center and a cup center with removable point appears. Drilling through the live center is no problem with this point removed. The live center also comes with a Bull Nose Cone that can be threaded on in either direction to center openings from 1 to 3 3/8 or to center spindle stock ends from 3 down to The design feature that I have personally used on just about every bowl I have turned since getting this live center is the ability to take faceplates and chucks from the headstock and mounting (with a Live Center Adaptor) them on the live center while in the tailstock. The rotating cup center has a tpi threaded body that accepts the adaptor to match any headstock thread configuration. This process allows you to gain easier access to the bottom of bowls for final turning and sanding. This process can also be used to perfectly center one piece of work to another using the headstock and tailstock threads at the same time making glue-ups a snap. The potential of this style of live center is only limited by your imagination. These live centers come standard on all Oneway lathes and on Jet 16 and all Powermatic lathes. Retail price on these live center kits run from $99.99 for the Jet to $ for the Oneway. Bill Caillet
