In This Issue Norm explaining his demonstration of the Lost Wood Process Septembers PRW meeting had a new twist for a change.. Lost Wood. Truly this technique actually has wood that will be lost in the process. Three pieces of wood are glued up and turned. When there split open, the center piece is discarded and not used for the final turning. Thus..Lost Wood. If you are an AAW member check out Journal number 27.4: for a good article on the process by Art Liestman. YouTube has a couple of video s on the process as well as doing a Google search on your computer. Try one for the Show & Tell Challenge at the October meeting.

2 The calendar listings are an attempt to keep you up to date on upcoming PRW events, as well as other events of particular interest to woodturners. Meeting October 1, 2015 Frank Bauer to demonstrate Tops at Sept. meeting. Tea Pot 2 Cultural Center Donations Thanks to all the members who have made donations to the Cultural Center gift shop. The executive staff at the Cultural Center very much appreciates our efforts and this has made a substantial reflection on our annual meeting room rent. Please continue to bring in donations. A new recording list will be explained at the October meeting to help keep records of what the club donates. Birdhouses are especially needed, but please feel free to bring in any other turnings that you desire. Empty Bowls The Empty Bowl project will except bowls at the October meeting. Deadline is November 5th to have bowls delivered. Nice touch for our group to get some community public relations. Please keep up the good work and bring your bowls to the October meeting. Thanks! Symposium Drawing Florida Symposium drawing will be held at the October meeting for all members that participated in doing a monthly meeting demonstration in the last 12 months. The club has open calendar months to demonstrate in 2016 starting in February. Please see club President to sign up. Remember, this gets your name in the drawing for the 2017 Florida Symposium in Lake Yale. All Expenses paid including room and board. Please consider sharing some of the great talent we have amongst us in the club. Thanks Edison Phonograph After a two year display at the Edison Museum In Fort Myers, Fl. Our winning piece will be removed and a new home found. Jim Ellsworth will pick up the piece this week and the club will make a decision on where it will be housed for the upcoming months. Several good suggestions have been put on the table. Florida Gulf Coast College, Edison Bank in Fort Myers, Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn Michigan where the original Edison Laboratory is located, and the birthplace of Thomas Edison Museum in Ohio. Soon as a sponsor has committed and the board approves, an announcement will be made. 4 4 the chuck. Turning the outside of the bowl when mounted in the Nova Chuck. This cup-shaped live center doesn t mar the bowl s surface when used as support for the chuck. I used some reddish colored wood that we had in inventory. I don t know its name because it came from a scrapped-out crate. So I just call it Crate Wood. This board was 3/4 thick. I used a plug cutter to cut enough plugs to fill 24 holes around the rim of the bowl. I then used a Forstner Drill in the Oneway Drill Wizard to drill the 24 equally spaced holes, the maximum indexing positions on my Nova DVR Actually, I glued in a plug each time I drilled a hole. The glue used was Tite-Bond 2, which is the glue that I use almost exclusively. 4

5 I ve never had a glue joint fail with this glue, which is a good reason to continue its use. 5 Drilling the 24 equally-spaced holes with the Oneway Drill Wizard and my 3/8 drive drill motor that had to be purchased to fit the collar of the Drill Wizard. Once the glue was dry, I turned away the tops of the plugs, finish-sanded, and applied finish to the inside and outside of the bowl. A view of the bowl from the side after sanding and finishing. 5

6 6 A view of the top of the bowl while still mounted on the lathe. The bowl was now ready to reverse and turn the foot. I would have normally reversed the bowl onto my vacuum plate made by Vicmarc that I ve had for a number of years. However, the Rim Chuck was easier to set up and worked very well. Again, for safety sake, I used tailstock support; something that I do with any reverse turning method, whether it is a jam chuck, a vacuum chuck, a Longworth Chuck, or the Rim Chuck. 7 7 I was pleased with the bowl and so was the person who purchased it. If you haven t tried decorating one of your bowls, perhaps it is time that you gave it a try. This was a very simple method, but only one of many ways to enhance the appearance of a fairly plain piece of wood. Give it a try. 7
