1 CHAPTER NEWSLETTER 2014 Issue 10 Chapter Newsetter October 2014 PROMOTING INTEREST IN WOOD TURNING Turning a Bowl from a Log with Drue Hogland The October Demo featured a start to finish review on how to create a Natural Edge Bowl from a fresh green section of log. Drue started with a discussion of the proper way to select and cut a log into a blank from which to turn the bowl. After cutting the blank to shape on the bandsaw, Drue covered the proper way to mount the blank on the lathe and prepare a tenon. Drue showed the members how to shape the outside of the bowl and then exchanged the drive center for a four jaw chuck. Drue then completed the bowl by hollowing out the inside. The final step was to mount the bowl, once again, using an unusual jamb chuck (made from a gasket used on Motor Home (RV) sewer connections). All during the Demo, Drue shared tips and suggestions including how to mount a bowl back on the lathe after the wood has dried and the tenon is out of round.. 2 CHAPTER NEWSETTER Issue 0 2 Frank Penta Demo Update There are still a few spots left for members and guests to attend the upcoming Frank Pena Demo at Drue Hogland s shop on November 15 th. The cost is only $ Contact Drue via at DLHogland@me.com if you would like to join the group and enjoy an awesome afternoon of turning. The Demo runs from 1:30pm until 5:30pm. The club will also invite members of the Crossville Woodturners Club to attend so make your reservations today. The Sunday workshop with Frank is full. The November Demo Turning a three cornered vessel from a cube with Dave Stricker is coming up on November 18 th. This Demo is also our 4 th Quarter Woodturning Challenge. Attendees will be able to go home after the Demo and turn their own project based on Dave s Demo. Members who bring a completed Three Cornered Vessel from a Cube to the December Meeting will have their project judged. The winner will be awarded a $25.00 Woodcraft Gift Card. Club Projects Update Bring any ornaments you ve completed to the November Meeting and they can still be included on our Fantasy of Trees, Tree. We have 130 ornaments but our goal is to turn 10 ornaments for each member. We need to turn 70 more to do justice to a 7 Tree.. Don t forget that each ornament should not exceed 6 x 6 in size. We wil be submitting our completed tree & ornaments shortly after the November Meeting so please bring any additional ornaments with you on November 18 th. Pens for the Troops Final Count. Members turned a total of 170 Pens that were turned in to Woodcraft this week. It s our best contribution to this National program to date. Thanks to all of the members who participated! Club Shirts are on order. We successfully met the shirt company s requirements for our custom club Tee s and Polos. The order has been placed and the shirts should be available at the November or at the latest, December SMWTS Meeting. These shirts were made available on a pre-order basis only. New Member and Visitors. We didn t have any new members join since the last meeting. We welcomed visitor, Ed Smith who attended the October meeting. Wood for Sale Bill Hancock, a past member of the club has retired and will not be able to turn. He has about two (2) truckloads (pickup?) of wood that he would like to sell (inexpensive). Much of it is dried and sealed. The pieces are about 18 long. Bill has some sycamore, cherry, walnut and other species. Arrowmont Drawing Winner for October Our Arrowmont Drawing winner for October is Harry Ford. Each month, a winner is drawn and in December, those monthly winners will compete for the club scholarship to Arrowmont. The scholarship covers the tuition for the workshop of the winner s choice. Room, board, supplies and transportation are the responsibility of the winner. Board of Directors Meeting Minutes The SMWTS Board of Directors meeting minutes will be available in a condensed format on our Website beginning with the 4 th Quarter 2014 Meeting (October). Review of the Georgia Woodturners Symposium, Turning Southern Style XX September 19-21, 1014 by John Tarpley. John attended the Georgia Woodturners Symposium and took photos of the presenters video monitors to help him chronical the key points. Instead you have access to each issue on-line which can be read from your computer and downloaded (.pdf) to print if you like.
