1 Cape Cod Woodturners Minutes and News November 2018 President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 33 members and guests to the meeting. A club BOD meeting was held on October 29. Current BOD members have agreed to continue in their positions. Steve Patzman will also be running for treasurer. We will have an election of BOD members in January If you are interested in running for any of the offices or director positions, let Clarke know. All current AAW members are eligible for the 2018 drawing for a Powermatic 3520C lathe. That winner will name a local chapter to win either a Jet 1642 or five Jet minilathes. Shipping is free. Denis Casaubon will be supported by our club to apply for an AAW scholarship to attend a workshop at Arrowmont or Campbell School during Upcoming programs and events In December, we will not have our regular club meeting but instead will have our Holiday Party at Sam Diego's, 950 Route 132, Hyannis, starting at 5:30 pm. You are welcome to bring a guest. It will feature an appetizer assortment with a cash bar as we had last year. If you are interested in participating in the turned gift swap, wrap your turning and attach a long string to the package. If you bring something to put in the box, you or a significant other can pull a gift out. $20 per person, payable at the door, includes tax and gratuity. RSVP to Clarke at clarke47@comcast.net. The CCW December Show and Sale at the Cultural Center is booked--dec 4 the show is hung, opening reception 12/7 5-7 pm, and takedown on 12/20. Dave Arnone is the point person again for the club. A new feature this year will be a $50 and under table for smaller items. Get your lathe cranking so you can participate in the show! We will also have the Great Gifts one day sale of smaller items during the Yarmouth Cookie Stroll, 12/8. Clarke is the point person for that event. More details to follow soon. We will start 2019 demonstrations in January with Jim Silva doing a natural edge bowl. February will feature Mike Grady doing a bird house ornament.

The enthusiasm was evident with our first club experience using this alternative demonstration method.

He presented on a quarter sawn oak platter, a kuska cup, shaping and sharpening of tools, and finishes. The enthusiasm was evident with our first club experience using this alternative demonstration method. Many thanks to Mike Grady and Dave Arnone for their work in setting up this demonstration for the club! Great door prizes, too-- thanks to Clarke and Robin. John Brown Elm The Rhode Island Historical Society had another 150 year old John Brown Elm tree which came down October 25--thanks to Clarke Buchanan, Denis

3 John Brown Elm The Rhode Island Historical Society had another 150 year old John Brown Elm tree which came down October 25--thanks to Clarke Buchanan, Denis Casaubon, Allan Reed, Richard Wright, Kathy Regan, Mike Grady, and Robin McIntyre who helped in processing the wood. The Historic Society is looking for some of the wood to be turned and returned to them, preferably $50 and under pieces, for their gift shop to raise money to re-landscape the property after the loss of 17 of their 19 elm trees. Contact Clarke if you are able to help with turning. CCW in the news Mike Grady's tutorial from this month's demo has been added to the project library in Go to Projects, and then Trees. CCW WIT are featured in a short article with photos in the September WIT newsletter which can be found on-line at Click on Services on the top menu, Women in Turning on the drop-down list, and then Newsletters on the left hand list.

4 CCW Women in Turning Seven members of our WIT group met at Michelle Cronin's W. Dennis shop on November 4. After a pot luck lunch, everyone participated in a group project of making a bell ornament. The camaraderie of the group was appreciated by all as we encouraged each other, gaining confidence, and skill. December sawdust session Toby Lorenzen and Bob Beardsley will be offering a sawdust session on making a bowl from a board on Saturday, December 1, from noon to 5. Eat early and join them at Bob s house at 37 Southview Way, E. Falmouth for an afternoon of fun and learning. Contact Toby at lorenzen@bridgew.edu if you are interested. You can participate 3 ways--just watch, bring prepped wood and work on your own glue up, or work on Bob and Toby's glue ups. Check with Toby for advice on prep. 7 AAW November Tip of the Month Want to show some of your work to the woodturning community around the world? Get photos of your work in the AAW galleries--one may be chosen as the Turning of the Week for the main webpage! To get started, from log in. On the lower right of the screen, click on "Register for the member-moderated AAW forum and submit your photos with the details". It will take you to the page shown below. Click on "Help and FAQs" in the bottom box. It gives step by step details on how to download your photos for the galleries. Need help with getting your photos? Ask fellow club members for hints, bring in your pieces and use the club backdrop at meetings, and/or check out the hints on taking photos in the June 2018 AAW journal, "Simple Tips for Better Photos" on page 24. Browse the galleries on a rainy day--from beginner to advanced projects.

8 Friends Don't Let Friends Breathe Dust! Our club had another inquiry into our source for the FDLFBD campaign--keep spreading the good news! We all can breathe easier in 2019 because we took care of our lungs, our health, and each other in The Club Tote has gotten lighter due to the September sales at Marstons Mills Village Day! If you have some turnings that you would like to donate for club sales, please get them to Clarke. We will get you a donation slip for your taxes along with our thanks. Smaller, inexpensive items tend to sell well. Need supplies? The club has thin and medium CA glue for $8 per 2 oz. bottle, double backed tape for $11 per roll, and end grain sealer for $12/gallon. These are available at meetings. You can also contact Clarke about the end grain sealer. The club makes a small profit on these bulk purchased items but you save! Mentoring program Remember that our club mentoring program is available to all members. About a dozen club members serve as mentors. New turners will be matched with an experienced turner who can help you learn the basics. Experienced turners who want to learn more about a certain technique or project will be matched with a mentor. Sign up for the program on our website or chat with Dave Arnone or Mike Grady who are chairing the program for the club. Learn something new and have fun. Also, if you would like to experience working on a variety of size lathes, let Dave know and he can set up that exposure for you in one shop setting. Remember that we have mentoring for demonstrators, too.

12 Featured Demonstration Christmas Trees By Michael Grady November 2018 First, let me start by saying thank you to my good friend Clarke Buchanan of the Cape Cod Woodturners. He taught me how to make these trees several years ago. Now the Christmas tree is the most popular piece I make, by far. My trees come in three sizes: 7, 9, and 11 tall. There is no waste lengthwise when using this method so you can start with a blank that s the finished length of the tree. For the diameter of the tree I simply go by eye. I hold the blank in the chuck by a tenon, but when I make those final finishing cuts to the trunk and the base It s necessary to expand the chuck jaws into a recess in the bottom of the tree. Choose a tenon size that s right for your chuck, but keep in mind the tenon has to accommodate both holding methods. If the tree is small, a chuck fitted with pin jaws works well when expanding into the recess. Blank: 3 ½ square by 11 long. Tools: A Spindle roughing gouge, a ½ bowl gouge, a detail gouge, and a parting tool.

This will be the bottom of the tree. The chuck jaws are going to mar the surface of the tenon so you ll need enough material to allow for cleanup cuts to the base. You will be cutting a recess in the bottom so you will need a tenon large enough to accommodate that too. In Fig. 4, I m measuring 2 ¾ for the tenon. The recess will be 1-7/8 in diameter. After the first branch is made I go back to using the tail stock for support. Several thicknesses of paper towels will help to protect the top of the tree as I bring up a small cup center for support (Fig. 9). Tail Stock support will minimize vibration dramatically.
