1 Cape Cod Woodturners Minutes and News October 5, 2016 President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 30 members and guests to the meeting. The treasury has about $3500 in our account. Thank you to Marc Sitkin for his donation of a stand to assist with our photography for the club. We are in the process of applying for funding through an AAW Educational Opportunity Grant (EOG) for equipment for teaching purposes. On November 4, 5, and 6, CCW is participating in Revelry, a show and sale of various art in progress at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in S. Yarmouth. This event will feature set-up on Friday evening with demonstrations, show, and sale on Saturday 10-5 and Sunday The club will be responsible for donating 1-2 turnings for a raffle but all proceeds from sales will go to the turner. Please consider joining in this club event- -both art and functional pieces are welcomed! Turnings need to be submitted by Friday, October 28 so we can catalog them--everyone can participate! Contact Dave, Clarke, or Robin about your turnings. We will have 2 lathes at the event--one for ongoing demonstrations and one where the public can turn beginner pieces with a club mentor. The wrap-up party is from 6-7 p.m. on Sunday--come and have some fun! Look at the Cultural Center's website at for more information about the center.

2 In December, we will be participating in a show and sale at the Cultural Center from 12/6 to 12/13. Members who are interested in participating in this juried event will split the cost of the galleries and the split with the Cultural Center is 80/20 on all sales. We have signed contracts for the Blue Room and Vault Gallery. They will staff the event but there will be an opportunity for demonstrations. Thank you to those who have already responded--if you are interested, let Clarke, Dave, or Robin know. In addition to the gallery exhibits, we will have a table and display for the Great Gifts event with 20 other vendors. Last year, they had 1,000 visitors through the building for the Great Gifts and Cookie Stroll. Smaller priced turnings (about $35 or under) would be great--bottle stoppers, pens, ornaments, small bowls, trees, etc. Participants will split the $50 table cost. We also have begun a conversation with the Cultural Center about future teaching opportunities. We will investigate the interest in the community and initially use borrowed equipment for a short term class, possibly 4 weekly classes. If the interest of both the club members and the community is ongoing, the Cultural Center has offered us storage space and assistance with funding sources. Upcoming programs and events Steve Patzman will demonstrate his 2016 Holiday ornament in November. December will feature our annual Holiday party at Sam Diego's in Hyannis-- Clarke will put out an RSVP soon so he know the size of the room to reserve. January 2017 will be a demonstration by Richard Wright on multi-axis turning. Jim Silva will demonstrate in February on various chucking methods. March will feature Clarke Buchanan--topic TBA. For our professional demonstration days in April 22-23, 2017, Mike Grady has confirmed having Stuart Batty for 2 days of demonstrations. Stu is planning to show techniques, cuts, design considerations, and procedures rather than making a piece. His philosophy is that he is teaching you to make anything! In follow-up to the motion to explore purchasing Anchorseal, Clarke presented information on the pricing and specifications of Classic Anchorseal vs. Hybrid Anchorseal2. After discussion, a motion was made, seconded, and unanimously passed to purchase a 55 gallon drum of Classic Anchorseal at approximately $376 plus shipping as needed and sell the gallons to club members for $12/gallon, netting a small profit to the club.

3 Safety tips--grinder Safety by Richard Wright Take the wheel off the grinder every month to check it for cracks. Tap it on the sides, while suspended, in 5 equal segments--listen for the sound to be even Make sure the wheel is balanced with tight nuts Keep the tool rests close to the wheel to avoid pinching Be careful of finger abrasions Wearing a face shield is essential--there are flying pieces of both metal and stone coming off the grinder You need lung protection from both the metal dust and grinder wheel dust--you are aerosolizing the wheel stone dust which can be microscopic. A mask rated N95 catches particles to 5 microns and rated N99 catches particles to 1 micron. Wheel dust is 1 micron. 5 Marstons Mills Village Day CCW participated in Marstons Mills Village Day on September 11. Participants Don Chase, Jim Silva, Bob Reynolds, Clarke Buchanan, and Robin McIntyre did demonstrations on 3 lathes for the enjoyment of the interested crowd. Deb Chase helped in the MM Library with displays of turned items from our club tote, Jim, Bob and Clarke--thanks, Deb. Although sales were light, interest was high! Thanks to Jock Crew, Clarke, and Robin for turning tops for the children--we gave out about 40 and easily could have used more. Thanks to those who stopped by!

7 CCW Picnic at Aptucxet Trading Post Blue, sunny fall skies welcomed 36 members and guests to the September 2016 picnic at the Aptucxet Trading Post complex in Bourne. Good food, good company, and a tour of the Trading Post by one of their docents--a good time was had by all! 10 Video Presentation--Hollow Sphere by Art Jalbert Video editing by Jim Caiazzi This project took approximately 30 hours of total turning time. Some highlights: The 140 pound blank was initially shaped with a chainsaw. A 1" hole was drilled for the drive spur and tail stock for safety The outer shape was roughed between centers with a tenon turned on each end. Art used a cardboard half-circle template to judge the roundness of the sphere, checking often throughout the turning process He left a flat "equator" on the sphere for a steady rest The ball was 70 pounds at this time and was next mounted in the chuck Finished cuts were made on the outside at about 300 rpm using an Ellsworth fingernail grind gouge

11 He made a notch in the pattern for the steady rest, cut off the tail stock tenon to use for a hole plug later, and put the steady rest in place. Art used a 1 5/8" Fostner bit to drill a 13 1/2" deep hole in the base of the ball. He hollowed using a long boring bar in a captured system, hollowing initially to 1" thick and then thinning it to 1/4", measuring often with his calipers. The shavings are blown out intermittently to make room for more Once he got to the desired thickness, the steady rest is removed and the exterior sanded He applied 2 coats of 50/50 marine varnish/mineral spirits on the exterior and swished some on the interior. Art re-chucked the old tenon piece from the base to make a plug for the hole. The plug was glued in place and then turned to the ball shape and 2 more coats of the 50/50 applied. To cut off the headstock tenon, he backed the tenon out of the chuck and parted the tenon down to about 1". With a second person supporting the ball, he cut off both ends of the remaining tenons with a Japanese saw and hand sanded the ends. Thanks, Art, for interesting and informative presentation!
