3 ATTENDANCE: 23 GUESTS: Milan & Sheila Novak, (Joined at the meeting), Steve Gonzalez, and Eddie Winitz BRING BACK & 50/50: The Bring-Back is not a competition, bring what you turned before the next meeting or bring in a piece from your shelf. It s getting to the point that the same handful of people are swapping pieces. We need more participation. Only 4 out of 18 members participated. Josh Bush gave Paul Provost a Mahogany Lamp Shade. WORKSHOP: The next workshop will be on June 16th, 2018 from 9 to noon at Waldo s SW 187 Avenue, Miami. No children under 10. Children 10 or older who are interested in woodturning are welcome with a parent. Bring a N-95 dust mask to the workshop if you plan to turn. Also your tools and face shield. SAFETY: A dust mask should be used for any sanding on the lathe, sharpening tools, etc. A mask should also be used when grinding tools. Powdered metal is as bad for your lungs as sawdust is. When using CA glue do not glue yourself to something you cannot pick up. Know where acetone or fingernail polish remover is in case of accidentally gluing of yourself to something. The fumes are nasty, wear a mask. June Demo: David Freundlich and Gary Venema - Making Jam Chucks, Threaded Chucks and Beyond. Use Materials found in the shop, David and Gary demonstrated how they make their own Shop Supplies. David and Gary took turns showing how to make their own supplies. FACEPLATES: Faceplates-For-the-Lathe If you already have a Faceplate screw a piece of scrap wood, make sure the surface is flat and glue it to another the piece that you are going to turn into a bowl. Can also be used for a piece that is not longe enough for a tennon. Using a scrap of wood, turn a tendon insert into a chuck and square the surface. Either use glue, double tape, or drill holes for screws to secure you item to the scrap wood. Using a scrap piece of wood drill a hole in the center that will accept a 1 x 8 Threads Per Inch (tpi) or a 1-1/4 x 8 TPI tap to be used one the size of your lathe. Either use glue, double tape, or drill holes for screws to secure you item to the scrap wood. Page - 2
4 JAM CHUCKS: e/jam-chuck Jam Chucks can be made just like a face plate along using one of the above methods, without the screw holes. The Jam Chuck is inserted in the inside of the turned piece pressed up against the Tailstock. A piece of leather is place on the Jam Chuck for elimination of slipping. This method is usually used to turn down a tendon. Do not use the rubber material that is use for covering shelves, it will leave an imprint on your piece. CHUCK INSERTS: /Vicmarc-VM120-VM150-Chuck- Threaded- Insert?term=chuck+insert+adapter&term=chu ck%20insert%20adapter Chuck Inserts are handy if you have more than one Lathe or change Lathes and keep your old Chucks. The insert will allow a 1 x 8 TPI to be used on a larger Lathe with a 1-1/4 TPI Spindle. MAKING A TAP FROM A BOLT OR THREADED ROD Wood-Tap-From-a-Bolt/ MENTORING: Feel free to ask around for help. Most members are willing to help others with information that can be given over the phone or even hands-on, should anyone need help. ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE! Mentors: Joe Dion Homestead Joe Roig Kendall Ralph Callander South Dade (sharpening tools, basic to advance hollow form, tool making) David Freundlich Miami INSTANT GALLERY: BOTTLE STOPPER MANDREL: HZCSk A Bottle Stopper Mandrel is used specifically for Bottle Stoppers with a 3/8 threaded Stud. There are many was to make a Mandrel as David Freundlich demonstrated. USING YOUR LATHE AS A DRILL: Use a Jakobs Chuck on you tail stock mount a drill bit drill so you can drill a hole that is being held in the Chuck. Remember to keep the RPMs low and back out the drill occasionally to make the drilling easier. Page - 3 Brian Seguin - Mahogany, Vase, Deft Gloss Laquer. Pete Gonzalez - Pecan, Bowl, Liberon Oil.
