1 Promoting the Art And Craft Of Woodturning PBCW News Volume 11, Issue 6 : June 2013 PBCW June Meeting will be held at Mounts Botanical Garden 6/22 Minutes From The May Meeting The May meeting of the PBCW opened with thirty three members and guests present to witness the demonstration by Lee Sky. Lee demonstrated how he turns and forms miniature hats. Lee turns the hats from various woods but one of his favorite materials is Bottlebrush burl. He likes these burls because their grain structure makes it possible to form them easily after turning and because of the way they distort when drying. For this demonstration however he used a piece of fresh Mango. It is important that the wood be as fresh and wet as possible until the turning is finished. Lee sprays the wood with water durning the turning process to prevent it from cracking and distorting until the work is finished. Lee turns the wood very thin so that it can be bent upon the forms he makes for that purpose. He uses rubber bands to hold the hats bent against the forms until they dry and permanently take on their final shape. The hat Lee turned in the demo was auctioned off at the end of the meeting with the proceeds going to the club. After the demonstration and clean up PBCW president Tim Rowe announced that our next three meetings would be held at Mounts Botanical Garden. Treasurer Bruce Williams reported that the club has $ in the general fund, and $ in the education fund. Bruce further stated that sales at the April Mounts show netted the club about $300. Brian Rosencrantz spoke about the first meeting of the new creative woodturning class. Tim Rowe reported that Wednesday workshops are proceeding well with more organization now that all students are working on the same project at each meeting. John Buso emphasized the importance of supporting the Okeeheelee Nature Center Inside This Issue: Coming Events 5 Scholarships 5 Gallery 2-4 Friends Form 6 even in summer when we can t meet there. Financial cutbacks have really reduced the Center s ability to serve the public, the PBCW included. John encouraged the club members to become Friends of Okeeheelee Nature Center. A copy of the membership form is included on the last page of this month s newsletter. Currently there is no way to joins the Friends online. Please print the form and mail it to the address listed along with your payment. Send the whole page so the Friends know your re a PBCW member. Tim Rowe and Bernard Caesar both spoke about Stuart Batty who will be demonstrating and teaching at the PBCW October Stuart is a fourth generation woodturner who specializes in teaching woodturning and organizing woodturning from start to finish. Tim also announced that Florida woodturner Rudy Lopez would be demonstrating for the PBCW sometime next winter. The 50/50 raffle was won by Jim Davis who donated the winnings back to the club. This month s bring back winner was Dominick Cavallo. Members are reminded that the coffee and donuts served at every meeting cost the club about $45 per month. Woodturning Scholarships Available Anyone interested in receiving financial assistance from the PBCW to attend a recognized woodturning course may apply for a grant in the amount of $250 or $500 to assist with expenses. To apply for a grant simply complete a grant application and give it to a member of the education committee. The education committee members are: Bill Jones, Brian Rosencrantz and Al Gruntwagin. In return for the aid the scholarship winner must agree to provide one or two demonstrations for the club at regular meetings during the year following attendance at the course. Eligibility for the scholarships will be judged by the club s education committee.
