1 S June 2000 The CAW Newsletter The CAW Newsletter is the official publication of the Capital Area Woodturners Chapter of the AAW, and is published for the information of its members. Membership in the CAW Chapter is open to anyone interested in the art and craft of woodturning. Meeting Announcement: Date: June 8, 2000 Time: 6:30 9:30 PM Place: Woodcraft Supply 6123 Backlick Rd.. Springfield, VA DIRECTIONS TO THE MEETING: Take I-395 or the I-495 Capital Beltway south toward Richmond. Get onto I-95 going south. Get off at the very first exit, Route 644, Old Keene Mill Rd. going west. One short block later (just past the Carpet store) turn right onto Backlick Rd.. Go through two stop lights. Turn right into the Concord Shopping Center parking lot. Woodcraft is fifth shop in the row. PLEASE RETURN YOUR VIDEO TAPES ON TIME! If you can not get to the next CAW meeting on June 8; mail (or deliver in person) your tape to: Jayne Hart 9018 Hamilton Dr. Fairfax, VA Jayne Hart has headed up the Video Library Team for 3 years. As of the June 8 th, 00 meeting, Jayne is stepping down and turning over the reigns of the team to Gerald Headley. Jayne has been the driving force in expanding our video library to double its original size; and in introducing a level of control and discipline in accounting for the tapes that was missing before she took over the duties of library management. Upon her departure, Jayne submitted to the CAW Officers a list of further recommendations and ideas about how the video library can be funded, expanded, made more responsive to members desires. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Jayne for all the time and energy she has dedicated to the library on our behalf. It is through members like Jayne; getting involved in CAW operations for the betterment of us all, that our club continues to prosper and grow. Program For The Month 6:30 pm The normal hour of skill enhancement/practice on the lathes or talking over problems and techniques with your fellow woodturners. 7:30 pm A short business meeting, (plenty of opportunities to save money), another rousing Show & Tell session (so bring in your best work), and announcements of coming activities. After a short break, C.A Savoy will demonstrate the set-up, chucking, turning, and finishing of natural edge bowls. We've all admired them. Now we'll learn how to make them ourselves. Thanks Jayne! Good luck in your future activities. Show Announcement Joe Dickey is giving a solo show, "Conversations With Wood" in Annapolis at the Md. Federation of Art's "Gallery on the Circle" (18 State Circle) from 28 June - 30 July, The reception is on Friday, 30 June, from 6-9. Joe will have about 20 pieces on display. We'll See You There!!

3 June 2000 Page 3 Tip 0f the Month CA Glue Holder By Bruce Hoover (Tidewater Turners, Virginia) When using CA glue for repetitive tasks such as gluing tubes in pen blanks or similar work the drawback seems to be having to "shake" the glue to the tip of the bottle each time it's needed and then sitting it back down only to start again. Sometimes knocking the bottle over in the process. Pictured below is a holder I designed to aid in these types of situations. This photo shows the basic holder. It is cut from a piece of 2 x 4 on the bandsaw. There is a notch in the top in which a second piece is inserted. This shape of this piece is determined by the type of glue bottle you have. Note that there is a slot cut in the side to provide a little tension on the bottle. There is also a small notch in the underside of the back for the rubber band to seat in. To use it, simply insert the bottle of CA and slide it forward or back according to how full it is to achieve balance. When using, simply tilt it and squeeze the bottle as shown. It will tilt back each time and keep the glue from running out. Hope this makes glueing life a little easier for you. Shown below is a drawing of the holder. It should be pretty easy to understand. The key is to make the top piece to fit your glue bottle; ie: round, oval, etc; and size. Feel free to download this image to print out for your use.

You all have to look at a picture of the Finch feeder in my backyard. I was very pleased to have up to 7 male Goldfinches feeding at the same time. I think it's kind of a pretty picture in color. Sorry that it doesn't come out quite so well in the black & white reprint. Jim Marstall
