He is a member of SAPFM Society of American Period Furniture Makers and has been building these type of projects over the last 25 years. He brought various projects to share which included a candle box, various jewelry boxes, a plant stand, matchstick box, blanket stand, small side table, picture frames and a decorative mirror. Most of these projects are made from leftover wood from other projects he has made in the past. The advantage of using leftover wood is if you mess up, you have not wasted materials. On small projects you need to be more precise in the details, because people will be viewing them much closer. It s not a big deal, you can have a large shop, small shop, medium shop, tiny shop, clean shop, dirty shop. Whatever shop you have it will work for the shop tour. We can learn just as much from something you have done right as from something you have done wrong. You might be nervous about allowing people into your shop; just so you know, these tours are only open to CWA members (no guests are allowed). I could use a few more shops on the tour, if you will allow your shop to be on the tour please send me an e- mail. You will get plenty of notice before a tour and if it doesn t work for you, then it doesn t work, no problem. Thanks, Mike C. Smith 1

Please pay close attention to the schedule because your class times move around during this build project. Spindles are the first session. Bowls are the second session. 5 Boy Scouts of America Woodworking Merit Badge: Scouts worked on merit badges at JPM this fall in October assisted by CWA members. Explorers Post: We have had keen interest from area Scouts. An Explorer Post (A co-ed teenage division of Boy Scouts for year olds) has been exploring a variety of areas of wood working in the broadest sense including framing, cabinet making, furniture making, wood turning, etc. They meet at JPM generally meet once a month on the 3rd Saturday of the month. JPM Shop Use Any current CWA member who would like to use the shop is welcome to do so! All that is needed is to schedule the time! If you have something specific you need to do and you need our tools or a bigger shop to work in, please do so! To use the shop contact Jim Emery at: JimE@JacksonPark.Org. CWA members are there on Monday nights at 5:30 pm if you need any advice or assistance with a project. Post members that want to also join CWA get a student membership rate of $15/ year. CWA Google Groups There is a new method for CWA membership to communicate! With a single we can let you know what s happening. You can also view all the 2009 published club newsletters. Note: You Can Join This Group on Your Own! To join: Click the link "Join this Group" (on the right). Create a Google account if necessary (all they want is an address and password). 11 Charlotte Woodworkers Association, Inc. W o o d h u m o r An old timer is looking at some tools at the local building supply store, and picks up a hammer. Don t make these like they used to, he tells the salesman. I ve had the same one for over fifty years. Just had to replace the handle six times and the head twice. Alex and Benny had been woodworking buddies for almost eighty years, and one day Alex speculated on the possibility of there being woodworking in heaven. Both agreed that whoever died first would come back and tell the other if there is. As it turned out, Benny died the next day. Exactly one month later, Alex woke up to the sound of his name being called. Alex! Wake Up! I have good news and I have bad news! cried the ghost of Benny to his friend. The good news is that woodworking is everywhere in Heaven! No matter where you go, there s an open shop. They always have the latest tools, everything always cuts perfectly, joints practically join themselves! It s paradise up there! That IS good news, Alex said. But what s the bad news?
