1 CAPITAL AREA WOODWORKERS WOODSHOP ADVISOR Volume 30 Issue 3 March 2017 Upcoming Meeting: Wednesday, March 1, 2017 Social Time 5:15 to 6:30 Meeting starts promptly at 6:30 MCL Cafeteria, 2151 Wabash Ave March Program: Wood Carving Presented by: Jack Tefft FINAL REMINDER: CAW club membership dues were payable in January. The annual dues amount is $30 ($15 for each additional family member). Please submit payment to Norm at the next club meeting or via mail. January 2nd Monday February 7th Tuesday March 1st Wednesday April 3rd Monday May 2nd Tuesday Schedule of 2017 Meetings CAW Officers 2017 President Michael Mitchell President-Elect Open Past President Clay Crocker Treasurer Norm Koerner Editor Clay Crocker Web Master: Michael Mitchell Website: July Annual Club Picnic August 1st Tuesday September 6th Wednesday October 2nd Monday November 7th Tuesday June 7th Wednesday Dec Club Xmas Party Mark your calendars now! 1 February Meeting Review: Editor s note: Being that I was absent from the February meeting, I have to thank David Kalaskie and Michael Mitchell, again, for providing me with a written report and photographs of the meeting s events. There were approximately 30 people in attendance at the February meeting. Two new members joined our club; James (Jim) Atterbury and Robert (Bob) Leffler. Welcome to the CAW Jim and Bob! Treasurer s Report: Norm Koerner reported that the club s current bank balance is $3, Norm announced that anyone not paying dues tonight could mail their dues to him. Old Business: President-Elect Vacancy: Michael reminded the membership that the club is still in need of a The President s Corner See Meeting, p2 We had a great turn out at our February meeting for the program presentation by Lee James from Uneeda. I am looking forward to the same turn out for Jack Tefft and his presentation on Wood Carving at the March meeting. We are still working on getting presentations lined up for our regular club meetings, so if you want to share your talents with the group let us know. Don't forget to plan to present something in the Springfield Art Association s Works in Wood exhibit in October, this will be great marketing for the club.
2 Meeting, Cont. from p1 member to step-up and volunteer to serve as President-Elect. The success of the CAW relies upon the participation of its members, so please consider serving as a leader of our club! Jeff Miller class topics. There was a discussion of the planned class topics for the Jeff Miller presentation in June. Michael read the following description of the course training to be provided by Jeff Miller: Mortise and Tenon Joints The mortise and tenon is the foundation of high quality woodworking. It is the best joint for chairs, door frames, tables, and more. It can also be a challenge to cut and fit well. Jeff will discuss optimal layout and some of the variations on the joint and their uses. He will also explore cutting these joints by hand and with the aid of some simple jigs that can turn out hand cut joints as accurately as those cut on a machine. Dovetail Joints The dovetail joint is the more visible sign of craftsmanship. It s a great joint for drawers, boxes, and case pieces. Jeff will cover dovetails and halfblind dovetails (for drawer fronts), and discuss layout, proper saw and chisel technique, and fitting the joint. Along the way, he ll give numerous tips and tricks, as well as show off a few simple jigs that might help get you more accurate results. Michael asked if the group wanted the training to include power tools (e.g. band saw or routers) and/or if the group would prefer to change one of the presentations to the topic Design? The group as a whole would like Jeff Miller to include power tools in his presentation and would like to keep the two topics already selected. Michael will send an to Jeff Miller requesting that he adjust the class topics to include some power tool techniques in addition to the hand tool work. New Business: Michael presented a motion from the Board to establish a Family Membership. Any immediate family member of a current, dues-paying CAW member, may join the CAW at half the current 2 membership amount. Immediate family member shall include spouse, domestic partner, children, grandchildren or parents. The motion was approved by the members present. Michael gave an update on what he has discovered about touring the USDA Forest Products Laboratory. Group tours at the Lab are available by request and can be tailored somewhat to your groups interest. They generally include our newest research facility where wood durability and preservation, engineering mechanics, and composites research takes place. Also they would show their wood collection and wood identification area as well. The lab is open Monday Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tours are only provided within that time frame. Tours generally last about 90 minutes, and 25 people is the limit for one group. If you have a larger group we can split into multiple sections. Michael asked how many members would be interested in such a trip and only four responded in the affirmative. He also requested Shop Tips and/or Jig-of-the- Month ideas for the newsletter. February 10 12, 2017, is the next St Louis Woodworking Show, again at the Gateway Center in Collinsville. Kunz Carpentry & Tools in Trenton, IL, has chosen not to exhibit this year. Instead they are having a sale at their location that coincides with the Collinsville show. CU Woodshop is having a Finishing & Staining expert come in Saturday, Feb. 11. FREE seminars 10 AM-noon and 2-4 PM. Michael reminded everyone about the upcoming Works In Wood exhibit at the SAA Collective's gallery at the Hoogland Center. The exhibit will be October 20 through November 17, Member s are encouraged to participate. Evening Program: UNEEDA Technical Sales rep Lee James gave the evening program presentation. UNEEDA has been a distributor selling sandpaper for 49 years. UNEEDA sells abrasives in the woodworking, metal working, stone and marble industries. Lee covers a large See Meeting, p3
3 Meeting, Cont. from p2 territory which extends across Tennessee, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Missouri. Lee passed around an air tool that normally sells for $199, but would sell to our club members for $159. This EKASAND orbital sander requires 60 cfm of compressed air at 90psi. This sander has a "tight orbital" and is good for sanding molding since the sandpaper takes the shape of the molding contour. Masterbrand Cabinets, Inc. in Arthur, IL use these sanders mainly due to this fact. This company manufactures about 8,000 doors per day according to Pneumatic random orbit sander from UNEEDA Lee! This sander is heavy and has an aluminum housing, which Lee says is better than his competitor's sanders like Dynabrade and Ingersoll-Rand. UNEEDA offers another sander with an orbital not as "tight". It swirls in 3/16" arcs, as opposed to 3/32". Lee recommends 150 grit and finer. Lee said he will provide the club with a price list of all their sanding products. Norm asked about dust collection. Lee said they offer both electric and air sanders, each with many different hole patterns. Multi-hole patterns work best with multi-hole sanding pads. Lee brought two rolls of padded sandpaper, 150 and 180 grit for club members to take home. Lee said, "After the presentation, just come up and rip off a 3 Some of UNEEDA s hand sanding products. few 4-1/2" by 5-1/2" sheets." Lee suggested he could give an entire seminar on sanding if the club wanted. UNEEDA s electric sander is their latest offering. It's very quiet with multiple speeds, 5,000, 7,500 and 10,000 rpm being the highest. National Office Furniture uses them. They are $400, or $529 with dust collection included. It has a 3/16" orbit. A member had a question about wide belt sanders. Lee went on to say they offer any kind of wide belt sandpaper, paper or cloth. Custom sizes OK. Lee explained about the joints used on wide belts. There's a directional arrow on all of them, but the arrow can be ignored on belts using a "tape joint". One must use the arrows on "Lap Joints" or "Butt Joints", (which to me sounded like two different types of joints but it's different verbiage for the same joint.) Lee brought brochures to share. UNEEDA also offers vacuums with Hepa Filters for $729 less 15%. He also had cards with his address, should anybody have ANY questions about sanding. Lee has a lot of experience and offered to help in any way he could. Lee added that he can help with trips and tours, such as the Arthur Amish shops. See Meeting, p4
4 Show-and-Tell: Roland Folse brought in a table with rough bark edges, a key visual of the top and legs. He likes the work of George Nakashima, whose signature woodworking design was his large-scale tables made of large wood slabs with smooth tops but unfinished, natural edges, sometimes consisting of multiple slabs connected with butterfly joints. Lon Scott brought in some very nice pens that he finely wood burned. I suggest Lon bring those pens in again so that everyone can see the fine details. Show-and-Tell pics can be found starting on page Raffle: 50/50 amount was $44 and was won by Jack Tefft. Announcements: Meeting, Cont. from p3 The March meeting program presentation: Wood Carving presented by CAW member Jack Tefft. Shop Tip Conventional wisdom dictates that you can t cut corners in the workshop. Well here is a Shop Tip where cutting corners has a positive result. For those of you who have a dust collection system in your workshop, you may be familiar with the black, plastic blast gate pictured below. This style of blast gate is fairly ubiquitous and can be found at many home centers. Special Notes: Show-and-Tell: Members are encouraged to bring in items or projects to share at our meetings during the Show-and-Tell session. Show us what you ve been working on lately! Share What You ve Learned: If you ve read an interesting article or some other woodworking related source, bring the topic to one of our meetings to share. Your participation is needed. Bring a Friend or Absent Member: And don t forget to call members you haven t seen at our meetings lately to ask if they need a ride to our next meeting. You are also encouraged to bring a friend who might be interested in the presentation topic. WANTED The CAW is looking for members to contribute content to the Woodshop Advisor. Do you have a Tip that you think other members would be interested in? It could be TIP-OF-THE-MONTH in our next issue! Do you have an interesting or unique jig that you use? It could be JIG-OF-THE-MONTH in our next issue. Send Clay Crocker an if you have an idea for the newsletter, it just might get published. 4 Unfortunately, this design allows sawdust to get jammed into the lower corners of the gate slot (areas circled above). This prevents the gate from fully closing after a while and is difficult to remove. I have found that if I saw off a small amount of both raised corners (again, the circled areas above) then a little air is drawn through the openings while the gate is in operation. This prevents dust from collecting in the corners, allowing the gate to be fully closed when not in use. I have seen some cut the entire corner off. I like to saw diagonally across the raised corner until just shy of the lower casing and then saw perpendicular to the first cut, removing a small triangular piece without destroying the integrity of the blast gate. Submitted by Clay Crocker Check Out Your CAW Website! If you have not been to in a while, you should check it out! The website has a new, updated look and is easier to administer. Some new features include a members only bulletin board and password protected member information. If you need the password, contact Michael Mitchell at: michael.f.mitchell@comcast.net
