2 President s Letter Greetings, Western Piedmont Woodworkers Club, Do you have a walking stick...one you have made, inherited, received as a gift, found in the woods, bought...if so bring it to our February 24 meeting for show and tell. The program for that meeting will be about walking sticks, presented by club members Dick Knotts and Gerald Olson. They will share some history of walking sticks, review various types and share some they have made and collected. We will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Klingspor Woodworking. Welcome to new member Al Hunter. Al joined our club last month and enjoys basic woodworking and turning. He and his wife live in Aiken, SC but also have a condo in Hickory. Al s address: 1443 N. The site will be reopened later in the year. If you have ordered but not received your shirt or cap, I will have the order for you at our Feb. 14 meeting. Some important club dates We will elect board members and officers at our June 23 meeting. Our September 22 picnic and woodcraft contest meeting will again be at the St. Stephen s Lutheran Church (ELCA) picnic shelter on Springs Road. You are invited to bring a woodcraft project you have made during the October 2017 September 2018 year for the contest. Met any woodworkers recently? 4 January Meeting Highlights In January, we were joined by Western Piedmont Community College faculty member and master woodcrafter, John Ferguson. He provided a demonstration in making dove tail joints using a band saw and a table saw. Here John shares how he marks the board for cutting pins on the table saw. John shows how to carefully cut out the tails using the band saw. Remember to creep up on those lines!

5 Charlie Brown shows us his very fine detailing work on this table. Bruce Swanson shows us his lathe handiwork with this example of a shaving stand. Art Carney shares his scroll saw design of Mary. That s really Poppin Art.

6 February Meeting Topic For immediate release February 15, 2018 Contact: Bob Singletary Walking sticks to be topic Hickory A presentation on building walking sticks will highlight the Feb. 24, Western Piedmont Woodcrafters Club meeting. The meeting will be held at 9:30 AM at Klingspor s Woodworking Shop, st St. Dr. SE, Hickory. Walking sticks come in a great variety of sizes, shapes, and designs. They can be used in daily activities and on hiking trails for many purposes, such as support, balance, and self-defense. Long-time club members Dick Knotts and Gerry Olson will cover many aspects of building walking sticks, such as wood selection, wood turning, carving, finishing, painting, and applying custom handles. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring completed woodworking projects to present in the Show and Tell portion of the program. Attendees will have an opportunity to offer comments and ask questions about demonstrations, items shown, and other topics. The meeting will include a video visit to a club member s shop. The Western Piedmont Woodcrafters Club consists of about 70 Hickory-area woodworkers of all skill levels, from hobbyist to professionals. The club usually meets on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Klingspor Woodworking Shop in Hickory. The exceptions are a combined November/December meeting, an annual offsite picnic, and the October Klingspor Extravaganza. Meetings are open to the public. For more information call
