If you aren t wearing a name tag, you may be asked to stand and introduce yourself. Spouses and Visitors Spouses and visitors are always welcome at our meetings. Reminders For Sale Table & Raffle Bring woodworking tools or accessories that you want to sell. Please make the deal before the meeting, during the break, or after the meeting. Also, bring any extra wood, tools, sandpaper, or anything that you may have for the raffle. Visitors are welcome to participate. The raffle tickets are $1.00 each and the proceeds go to the club treasury. Every ticket is drawn and the choice is made in the order the tickets are drawn. Page 1

2 President s Corner... Greetings Turners, I think that the October Ellsworth Demo is slowly coming together. Darien tells me that we have nine people signed up for the hands-on activities, so we will only have the Sunday session for that. If the Sunday participants can transport their own lathes without too much trouble, I think they should provide their own lathes. For those who will be traveling long distances and/or have large, difficult-to-move lathes, we will try to provide one. I have notified Mr. Telford at the fire station that we will be needing their facility on Friday (for set-up), Saturday and Sunday. We have had contact with Ellsworth and he says that his demo requires a larger 1-1/2 hp lathe, so if you have one, please consider letting us use it. We will arrange transportation. At the next meeting, we need to begin putting together committees to perform several of the activities necessary to make this thing work. When you are asked to help with one of these tasks, please step up if you are able. A reminder: I checked the blade guide bearings on my band saw a few days ago and found that two of the ten would not turn at all. I suggest that you check yours. They are easy to change and are very inexpensive at the Fastenal store on Hwy 201 North in Mountain Home. Ron... Kathy Levo, Librarian Programs and Events Update: CAVHS (Veterans wood turning program support) Update: At the August meeting, there will be a Special Raffle of the remaining lathe tools that were donated to support the veterans wood turning program. Items will be bundled as follows: four full size tools, seven Brookstone Micro tools, six Woodcraft Micro tools, nine Shopmate Micro tools, and eight homemade midsized lathe tools. Chances can be purchased at the meeting for $1.00 each. Please support this effort. To learn more about our support of the VA wood turning program, including preparing pen blanks to send to little Rock, see James Pruitt. Our club has been invited to make a presentation of our involvement in this program to the local DAV Chapter on October 1st. Our veterans could use your personal assistance at their Turning Center. Call James Pruitt to make arrangements to travel to Little Rock to assist. You can ride the DAV van, if there is room. Ellsworth Demonstration and Hands-on Classes Update: Registration for the Ellsworth demonstration on Saturday, Oct. 15th, is still open. Please contact Darcie Didden to sign up if you are interested. Volunteers are necessary to assist with this event, including facility and food arrangements and turning equipment. Please consider volunteering your time to make this event a great success by helping out. 7 CLUB ESTABLISHED 1995 Special Project - Coring a Large Burl OWT club members Frank Nixon, Kenneth Higgins and Mogi Morgan met in Ken s shop to core a large black jack oak burl (trimmed to diam. by 7.25 thick) using a McNaughton Center Saver System. At left, the burl is carefully measured and studied to determine the optimum coring dimensions. Shown on left, a tenon is formed on the bottom for a chuck to support and drive the burl for the remainder of the coring operation. Below, Kenneth carefully makes the first cut. Below, the second, larger core is cut with all hands involved in keeping the cut clear of chips and controlling the lathe speed. Below right, Mogi, feeling relieved, examines the final cored pieces. Now Mogi can apply his design skills and creativity to finish these pieces. Page 7
