1 THE SAWDUST Volume 14, Issue 6 June 2007 Small Talk Welcome to the latest edition of The Sawdust! This month s issue has a number of photographs from Fred Miller and John Goodson s presentation at the May meeting on Constructing a Chest the 18 th Century Way. The article from Early American Life magazine that inspired Fred to build his first version of this chest is attached as a separate.pdf file. We hope you enjoy the reading. The membership list is attached at the end of the newsletter. I will keep an updated list but this is last time we will be sending it out with the newsletter until probably December. The membership list will not be posted on the web site. (If any member ever needs an updated list all you have to do is send me an and I forward it to you.) Lastly, I have added a Calendar to the newsletter that will list events for June and July. For now it mostly has upcoming classes offered by Woodcraft, but if you know of any other events that you think should be on the calendar please do not hesitate to contact me. Constructing A Chest, the 18th Century Way At the May meeting Fred Miller, with help from John Goodson, showed us the construction of the case and drawer dividers/guides, including the wood selection and joinery techniques (hand-cut dovetails, mortise & tenons with room for expansion, etc ). The program for the June meeting will cover construction of the base, with ogee bracket feet, and the drawers. The Charlotte Woodworkers Association would like to thank Horizon Forest Products (Charlotte, NC) for donating the beautiful tiger maple wood and Horton Brasses ( for donating the drawer pulls. When completed, the piece will be displayed at Klingspor and Woodcraft, and then donate the piece in the Club's name to One Special Christmas. In the spirit of a picture being worth a thousand words, here are some photographs and notes from the evening: continued on page 2 Best regards, ~Peter Stoffel CWA Secretary Meeting Time Meetings of the Charlotte Woodworker s Association are held the third Tuesday of each month, except for December. Meetings are held at the Well of Hope Lutheran (formerly Incarnation Lutheran Church), 6400 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC (off Archdale Drive). A social and refreshment time starts at 5:30pm; our meeting starts at 6:30pm. Come to the meeting early and get to know your fellow woodworking enthusiasts! This shows the mortise and tenon joinery of the drawer divider. It is hard to see in the photograph, but the dovetail joint that will attach the rail to the side of the case does not run the entire length of the front rail, just the first 1-1/2 inches. The edge of the dust panel has been tapered rather than thinning out the entire board in a planer. Every joint is numbered to facilitate assembly. The Sawdust 1

2 continued from page 1 Here you can see one rail attached to the side of the chest. The round dowel sticking up 1/8 on the top of the rail will act as a stop for the front of the drawer. This way, as the case expands and contracts with the temperature and relative humidity the drawer front will remain in line with the front of the case. The wood for the bottom of the chest is poplar because this will not be seen. The Story Stick (right) shows the layout of the finished chest. (The stick is not lining up with this case because the feet have not yet been added ) There are no other finished drawings or plans. The Sawdust 2

3 continued from page 2 Below are some teaser photographs of Fred & John s June presentation: Fred showing the stick in relation to the case. Here we can see the components from photograph 1 being dry-fit into the case. The Sawdust 3
