Using the tools developed by these two, both straight and spiral cuts will be demonstrated. Club member Dick invented the Flute Master in 2012 and was first shown to the club that year. As a result of requests from users of the tool, the ability to make spiral cuts was added in 2014, with the assistance of engineer John Miller. These tools have already enjoyed an international acceptance from New Zealand, Australia, England, Hawaii, Canada to Norway. Cut a waste block the length you want the veneer. Set the cut the width of the waste block plus the width of the veneer. Lay the waste block against the fence and the veneer blank against the waste block. Tape the two together as firmly as possible. Set the waste block against the fence. Cut the veneer by pushing the waste block and veneer blank together using whatever safety method you prefer. The National AAW Symposium will be in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this year, June 26, 27, and 28. The 6 x 6 inch cross arm was mortised into the post. Six inch spikes were used to nail hands and feet. The cross weighs about 300 pounds. What does this have to do with woodturning? Nothing. 3

Turn Burial Urns Because of the increased use of cremation there is a strong demand for burial urns. The most beautiful and costly are turned wood. 43 % of burials are now cremations.

The ash is mostly the residue of bones, and is found to equal about 1 cubic inch of ash per pound of the weight of the individual.

Suggestions to determine the size of the urn need: In order to hold one's ashes you'll need to know the approximate body weight of the person.

Assume that: 1 pound body weight = 1 cubic inch ash. Cremation urn item descriptions list the size of an urn in Cubic Inches.

Easy example: A cremated 100 pound person will yield almost 100 cubic inches of ashes.

This provides an opportunity to use your woodturning skills for better profit. Urns are sized for the volume required for the ashes of people of different weight. If you know the weight of the deceased - then you know the size of the urn you need. Approximate Weight = Approximate Cubic Inch Size. Easy example: A cremated 100 pound person will yield almost 100 cubic inches of ashes. So, if 1 pound = 1 cubic inch then this person would need an urn that is approximately cubic inches or larger. More examples: Inside dimensions of 5 x 5 inches square x 8 inches tall = 200 cubic inches. A cylinder 5 inch in diameter x 8 inches tall = cubic inches cu in = ounces, or approximately quarts. (Ounces are easier to measure.) A 150 lb person needs 150 cubic inches (example: a round cylinder 5 inch diameter x 9.55 inches) 150 cu in = ounces (approx. 2.6 quarts) A 200 lb person needs 200 cubic inches (example: a round cylinder 6 diameter x 10.6 inches tall) 200 cubic inches = ounces (approx quarts) Conversion of cubic inches to liquid ounces: 1 cu inch = ounces $1,200 to $2,500 burial urns - courtesy of Artistic Urns 4

5 COWA Educational Committee Meeting Darrel Cookman, Chairman, called the meeting to order on March 31st. Doug Lawrence, Butch Lindsey, Dave Williams, Wayne Furr, and Bob Jarrett attended. All of the members of the committee were present. This was the first of several meetings to make lesson plans for the new 18 hour beginners class to be held in the fall. The Moore Norman Career Tech hosted the meeting on their southern campus. This was a wonderful site and more are planned at the same site. Dave Williams Gives Ducky Demonstration At the April 14th COWA meeting Dave Williams demonstrated how he turns ducks.
