August 2014 Issue Editors: Bob Jarrett & Dick Webber COWA Officers 2014 President - Michael Reggio Vice-President - Bob Jarrett Secretary - Jeff McCanlies Treasurer - Karen Robinson August Meeting Features Chuck Wright Director At Large - Terry Officer Director At Large - Darell Cookman Past President - Jim Clow Website - Joe Watson Professional turner and carver Chuck Wright lectured about wood carving. His subject included knives and tools, wood selection, sharpening, and how-to s for carving. Chuck was first a turner, then carver, and is a wellknown professional. He is called upon to judge both turnings and carvings. He gave pointers about what judges look for when selecting the best. Chuck Wright presented the August meeting program. Chuck is an outstanding carver and has been the judge for several woodturning competitions. Chuck Wright shows an eagle he is in the process of carving. He is one of the premier carvers in Oklahoma. Chuck is acquainted with many members of COWA, and has worked with them on projects and ideas. COWA meets at 6:30 P.M. the second Tuesday of each month at the Metro Technology Center s Automotive Training Auditorium, 4901 South Bryant Avenue, Oklahoma City, OK

More Photos From The August Meeting No, these are not photos from the Oklahoma Police line-up. These are photos taken by Charles Waggoner. How many of these members do you know? Butch is one of our longest members. He is active in the class activities at Moore Norman, pen classes, Dick Nowlin takes responsibility for many club projects. Club President Michael Reggio likes for the club to have many projects Sara Mantooth, Carol Reggio, and Nancy Waggoner enjoy some time together before the meeting. Dewayne Colwell, past president, non active, talks about the club he is helping form in Enid. Right - Dick Nowlin and Michael Reggio talk to the club about fair activates. Wherever there is work to be done, Bob Jarrett will be in the middle of it. He seems to be tireless and expert in many things. 2

KNOW YOUR TURNER: Terry L. Officer By: Virgil Young If you need a teacher or librarian, Terry is your man. He retired from the Oklahoma City School System after 29 years as a teacher/librarian throughout the metro complex. He started his colorful life in Weathers, Texas. But, after a month his parents thought better of it and moved to Oklahoma City where he spent the rest of his life. His education consisted of elementary school at Harmony Elementary, North East High School and finished with a Masters Degree at what was then Central State Collage. His degrees were in teaching and library science. Terry said that the most enjoyable part of his career was in the teaching. Being a librarian tuned out to not being his forte. In 1969 he had the good fortune of marrying his wife Francie and settled down to a comfortable life. They have been at their current residence some 30 years where they raised two boys. They both enjoy gardening/landscaping and the place shows it; a well kept lawn and beautiful plants. One of Terry s current interests is kite flying. He got into the hobby around 1985 and has really gotten into it. He is a member of the American Kiteflyers Association and currently Chairman of the Liberty Kite Festival. This is his fifth year as Chairman and is Chairman-elect for next year. His garage looks somewhat like a kite museum with everything he has collected/saved over the years. He is definitely what is called a Kiter. As far as woodturning is concerned, Terry is well into that also. He has been turning since about 1985 as well as being a member of COWA. He is currently on the Club s Board of Directors as a Member at Large. I have had the pleasure of working (playing) with Terry on demonstrations and know him to be an accomplished turner with the skew. He says he was taught by the master himself, Allen Lacer. He has four lathes in sizes from mini to 40 inches. His collection of turning tools is awesome. A dedicated honer, his tools are SHARP. Although he does some faceplate turning, spindle turning is his favorite style. Note: This is the first of a series of stories about COWA members. If there is a member you would especially like to know more about contact Virgil Young. Charles Waggoner and Tom O Connor discuss ornamental turning. This ornamental lathe was demonstrated at SWAT. But where s the sawdust? 3 Ornamental Lathe Charles Waggoner demonstrates his ornamental lathe during his and Nancy's open shop. Terry is an interesting person; very knowledgeable in many subjects and an excellent conversationalist. I suggest you meet with him and experience a time with a good man.

From Our Sister Club In England As you may recall Rolly is in the UK on a mini-tour ahead of his trip on the Norwegian Woodturning Cruise. Cheam pitched to have him for an all-day master class but we were not successful. One of our local clubs, East Surrey Woodturners, managed to get Rolly for their normal club slot and I went along last night to watch. Rolly started the evening with about 25 minutes of slides and commentary and then went on to the lathe. He turned a small Ash hollow form and after the break, put a wet log of Sycamore on the lathe. The result was the thin walled vase you see in the picture. There were about 30 ESW members and 20 guests (Cheam, Ashford, Middlesex and other clubs). Some of the guests were at our Jimmy Clewes masterclass. ESW members paid 5 ($8) and guests paid 10 ($16) as it was a "once in a lifetime special event". NB Rolly has been in the UK at least 3 times before this. ESW's hall is small so not much room to get good shots but the 3 attached show Rolly and the 2 pieces he made. I'm happy to share my thoughts on whether or not the evening was value for money with you personally. David The Cowa Library What s your current turning interest or skill? Do you want to go beyond what you already create at the lathe? Consider coming early to a club meeting or using the break time to peruse our video library. We have almost 500 videos catalogued by number and cross referenced by turner and subject. If you are new to lathe work, you can find easy-to-follow guides for most anything you might want to turn spindle work, Christmas ornaments, kitchen tools and bowls. For the experienced turner, there are SWAT demonstrations, tips from professional turners, and even portraits of artists and galleries. COWA members are welcome to check out five videos at a time, keep them through the month, and return them at the next meeting. The process is simple. Merely write down your name and the numbers on the videos you select. And when you return them, all you need to do is mark through the disks you return and place them on the table. Between now and the next meeting, think about your skill level or interest, and then visit the cases of videos just to the right of the sign-in table. You surely won t be disappointed. 4

Reaching out across the pond by David Buskell (President of the Cheam Woodturners) I hope you all took the opportunity to look at the UK/USA table at the last club night. On show were photos of the timber we gave to Central Oklahoma Woodturners and their gifts to us. The turned items from COWA gathered a lot of interest and comment, especially the small finials/open forms. The hild s rattle caused a few shaking heads as members worked out how it had been fitted together thanks to Bob Jarrett for sending us this piece. We have been ing Michael Reggio, Dick Webber and Bob Jarrett over the past few months as they are our main contacts at COWA. It is always better to put a face to the name and so while I was in Phoenix for the AAW Symposium, we arranged to meet. The photos in this e-news are of my first meeting with Michael Reggio and some of his members, taken after a long day in the Phoenix sun it was around 105 degrees all day! Later, during the symposium, I took the opportunity to check out the Flutemaster booth in the tradeshow. Flutemaster is Dick Webber s company and I saw him demonstrating the system. I also introduced Michael to Mark Baker who was on the GMC stand in the Tradeshow. Over the course of the next three days, we seemed to be constantly bumping into Central Oklahoma members even in the lift in the hotel! We can now look forward to building on our relationship with Central Oklahoma over the next months. The AAW Symposium Handbook was on the table to give you a flavour of what the symposium offers the woodturner: bowls, spindles, faceplate turning, plus tuition, critique, photography and safety, to name a few. It was good to see our old friends Jimmy Clewes and Richard Findley demonstrating. Doug Fisher gave excellent demos on colouring and perhaps one day we can tempt him to come over to Cheam if he is in the UK. The instant gallery was as incredible as usual I do hope Richard Findlay took time out to have a look at the work there, between his demos. The AAW does a lot for charity and this year we supported Seeds for Autism and Beads of Courage projects by supplying bowls and boxes and buying some that had been donated by other turners. No comment on the symposium would be complete without mentioning the legendary WoW (World of Woodturners) Brown Bag swaps. 50 people, all of whom bring in a piece of turned work, place it on the table and take a ticket. We all then wait anxiously for our number to be called, gather up our piece and move to meet the person who has been drawn to swap with us. This year it was Jim Beckwith from New Jersey and his walnut dish (see page 3) was on the club table. I gave Jim a Chilean laurel burr square-edge bowl in return. We ought to try this swap idea again, perhaps this time extend it to include our honorary members at COWA. Maybe an idea for 2015? The AAW symposium is a great opportunity to expand your woodturning skills in the broadest sense. If you get a chance to attend, it is worth the trip. In the August issue of the AAW Keep Turning Paper: Michael Reggio, president of the Central Oklahoma Woodturners Association, Newalla, Oklahoma, and David Buskell, president of Cheam Woodturners, South Croydon, England, had their first face-to-face meeting at the AAW s 28th Annual Symposium in Phoenix. The two chapters have developed a sister-chapter relationship similar to the sister-city concept. They have had skype sessions and have used to exchange ideas. In Phoenix, members from both groups met to exchange ideas about woodturning and wood. This is innovative relationship is expanding the woodturning community globally! I met with the president of our sister club in England at AAW in Phoenix. Their club gave us some wood to turn that he brought from across the pond. The only stipulation is that we take photos of what we turn and send it to them. They are fairly small pieces (3x3, 4x4, etc). If you would like to turn a piece of this, please me. (You do get to keep what you turn). Me is mreggio@mcloudteleco.com. - Michael Reggio 5

Cyanoacrylate (CA) Glue Experience When I was in Tulsa at a hands-on-day making platters with Frank Penta, I had a very interesting and at the time very disturbing experience with CA glue. Someone in the group needed CA glue so I loaned them mine. At the end of the day when we were packing up I was looking for my glue. It was easy to find and holding the bottle by the lid returning to my work station the bottle came out of the lid. The bottle hit the concrete floor of the shop causing a jet of glue to hit me in the eye. I could still see with some discomfort (understatement). I loaded my things and headed for the nearest emergency room. It seemed to me that no one there even knew what CA or Super glue was. After waiting forever, thinking I may have damaged my good eye, the Doctor finished reading his medical book for treatment and came into my room. He gave me a small tube of eye antibiotic. He said the oil in the ointment would dissolve the glue and I would be back to normal within 24 hours. I managed to drive back to Edmond with one bad eye and half a good eye. The next morning I was fine. I learned two things from that experience. 1. Do not carry things by the lid. I have learned this many times but never so dramatically. 2. Oil will dissolve CA glue. More mundane tips for the use of CA glue from my dermatologist. 1. If you have a scrape that raises a flap of skin smooth out the flap and apply CA glue. He said not for a cut only for a scrape. 2. If the callus on your heal cracks and gets sore apply CA glue to the crack. I find this to be very effective. Younger members may have trouble relating to this treatment. I enjoy woodturning and I enjoy our club as I hope you do also. See you all at the next meeting. Dale Jones Videographer Oklahoma State Fair Entries - Now is the time 1. don't forget to sign up if you are entering things in the fair. Dead line is Aug 15, online 2. if you are plannig on demonstrating at the State Fair on Sat or Sun, Sep 20 and 21, you will need to sign up at the meeting to obtain tickets and parking passes. I will take items out for people who have made their online entry and turn them in. They are turn in on Sep 6 and Sep 7. If I take your entry out, I will need a copy of your entry form to take with me plus the pieces. If you are still confused, please call me at Dick Nowlin Additional Demonstrations at OK State Fair We were asked if we wanted to participate in additional demonstrations on the Oklahoma Station Platform Stage at the OK State Fair in September. These demos are in addition to the special demonstration to children on Friday Sept 19 and the Saturday and Sunday all day demonstration in the Creative Arts area. We have requested a time in the first week in the evening and on the weekend of the first week either in the morning or evening. The fair administrators will let us know shortly what time slot we were selected to perform. This demo is only an hour in duration. We anticipate that the first demo will include a history of woodturning and finish with a quick turning, maybe a spin top. The second demo will be a demo on turning a bowl or long stemmed goblet. Bob Jarrett and Wayne Furr have volunteered for these demos. We will need a helper for each demo to help getting equipment in, set up, clean up, and remove equipment. 6

COWA Members Attending SWAT Dewayne Colwell made this Indian Head Dress and the breast plate shown here at the last segmented meeting. Later the piece won third in the Most Popular contest at SWAT. There were several hundred outstanding works of art on display to be judged, but nothing touched the elegance and workmanship of Dewayne s. Aren t we proud to know him! Another award winning entry was a Kaleidoscope. Carol Reggio took the photo below that shows the way wood was mitered together to begin turning the Kaleidoscope. Dick Webber and grandson Eric Weinmeister manned their Flute Master booth, demonstrating and selling these tools. Below is Eric. Here are more scenes of the display room where many seemingly impossible turnings and works of art were shown. Many COWA members attended the Symposium. Wayne Furr is the President of SWAT again this year and did his usual outstanding job of planning and officiating. COWA was well represented with about a dozen members in attendance, taking part in many of the activities. Photos by Carol Reggio 7

SWAT (Southwest Woodturners Association) Annual Meeting Alan Lacer talks to a potential buyer. Alan was our first club president. He now makes his living making and selling turning items. He demonstrated recently at our club. Our own Wayne Furr really wasn't by himself as he prepared for the Saturday night banquet and drawing. Wayne belongs to our club and was president of SWAT for the last two symposiums. Wayne is considered a magician. Jim Clow spends some of his hard earned money. Bring lots. Stuart Beatty demonstrates for the World of Wood. Stuart is the son a Alan who was one of the premier turners in England. Alan became his apprentice at an early age and continues to turn. He has turned a lot and he turns fast. Sara Mantooth won a prize and then later she won a jet Midi lathe. Some of the work done by Molly Winton. She makes horses that are beautiful. 8 Dick Webber shows a potential customer how to use the Flute Master. Dick designed the machine, sells it, and is still adding to the features available.

Carol Reggio Reports From SWAT Top 10 things I learned at SWAT 10) When making finials if you don t want to go to expense of buying ebony you can use boot stain and Kiwi black shoe shoe polish applied with paper towel to buff looks nice and it doesn t come off 9) Don t wait to sharpen your tools when they are dull. Sharpen them when they are not as sharp as they could be. 8) Another use for those rubber bracelets you get for free is to stretch them around your headstock chuck to act as a buffer for your knuckles in case your hands get too close to the chuck while turning 7) Dry Bradford pear trees to make good tops 6) Guitar strings and piano wire make good black burning rings to accent your work 5) Use narrow and sharp triangular shaped dark wood such as Purple Heart and apply pressure with the pointy end to the bottom of the coves on narrow beaded work. This will give definition to the bottom of your bead. 4) When making a kaleidoscope or other project you can glue your wood pieces to make a triangular shape, then round the outside. You end up with a triangle shaped hole in the center of your segmented project that you couldn t possibly have drilled. 3) The chances of breaking a piece of wood is directly proportional to the amount of money you have invested. 2) Take plenty of money for the vendors because there has never been a tool or piece of wood that you haven't loved 1) Let Sarah Mantooth buy your raffle tickets for you! (She won twice including a new lathe!) Charles Waggoner Hosted an Open House Charles Waggoner had an Open Shop in his wood shop and his wife, Nancy, had an Open House/Shop in her jewelry shop on Saturday, August 9 th from 10 am to 4 pm. Charles not only has the coolest wood shop, he also has a laser engraver, a rose engine, wood stabilizing systems, and an ornamental turning setup. Nancy has, in her jewelry shop, some of the neatest things, including ways to use clay to make silver and gold items. By the way, refreshments including wine were served. Don t miss another chance to visit Charles and his incredible shop. The address is 4711 Willow Circle, Edmond, OK Kathy Jekel's sister Jeannette Gibbons, passed away after a collision which injured other family members. Her funeral was Thursday, August 7 at 200 PM at ASA Smith Funeral Svc, 2039 Tim Holt Dr, Harrah, OK. Apparently, the driver of the other vehicle drop a cigarette and reach down to get it and crossed the center line hitting them head on. Please keep Kathy and all the family iin your prayers. Kathy"s address is South 3377 Rd., Chandler, Ok Dick Nowlin 9
