On March 16th Chris Taylor will demonstrate how to turn a sphere inside a cube. Raffle As usual there will be our raffle, with excellent prizes giving great value for the price of 1 per ticket. Alex Bellringer shows us how he makes a Celtic design on his pens Our Chairman Derek Dowle reports on the evening s demonstration. Alex Bellringer Demonstrates his Pen with Celtic Knot band. Members were treated to another demonstration from Alex in the skills of pen-making. On this occasion the focus was on incorporating a Celtic Knot band into a pen blank. The AGM shrunk the period of time for Alex to make the pen; however, in true Blue Peter fashion with some parts prepared earlier it was completed on time. The woods used were Maple for the blank with Padauk to create the Celtic Knot. Alex emphasised the importance of using woods with similar hardness characteristics. The finished knot consists of curved lines, but the project all starts off using flat pieces of wood. Alex showed members the jig that he had made to prepare the blank for the lathe using his bandsaw. The pen blank should be as square as possible with the ends cut at right angles to the line of the blank to ensure that the blank fits accurately into the jig when the four cuts are made. Veneers of Padauk need to be cut to the same thickness as the bandsaw cut. Dependent upon the depth of the Knot required the band-saw cuts can be made at either 30 o or 45 o. Before making the cuts number each face of the blank from 1 to 4 with the cuts being made in the sequence 1, 3, 2 and 4. The same process must be repeated for each blank face. With the blank secure in the jig make the first cut, not through the whole blank, but to within a few millimetres of the back face. Insert CA glue into the slot followed immediately by the Padauk veneer, clamp across the cut in the blank and finally spray the joint with activator to expedite the setting process. Now repeat the process for faces 3, 2 and 4. The blank is now ready to make the pen. The first action is to drill a hole through the centre of the blank. Alex stressed the importance of the hole being dead centre otherwise the Celtic Knot will not be constant around the pen. Alex then turned the blank. In doing so he demonstrated the importance of ensuring sufficient glue is inserted into each cut slot. A piece of the Maple broke away, but fortunately the hollow left was turned out of the finished pen. To finish the pen prior to assembly the blank was sanded down to 1000 grit. Alex used 50:50 diluted sander sealer followed by friction polish and wax. Job well done! We look forward to seeing you on February 17 th Page 1

2 Alex Bellringer demo continued:- The Chairmans report When invited to attend a committee meeting in November 2014 I was not anticipating becoming Chairman of the Club just two months later has been a steep learning curve for me and I am most grateful for the support that I have received from the committee and members of the club throughout the past year. There may only be six members on the committee but many more help make the club nights a success. Helping to set up the Peel Hall each month, rigging and working the video camera and sound systems, serving refreshments, manning the shop, obtaining the prizes and selling the raffle tickets and contributing reports and articles to the E-News. If you would like to volunteer please speak to me or one of my fellow committee members. This club like all organisations needs to change with time and during the past year I have received several suggestions. One that has been taken on board is for the Club to have a Facebook page. You will have seen a brief article about it the January E-News. The Facebook page will CHEAM WOODTURNERS provide an additional information stream for members COMMITTEE 2016 and a window for those outside the club to learn about our activities. Chairman: DEREK DOWLE One further suggestion was for the club to have an identity when displaying work, demonstrating woodturning Secretary: TREVOR ETHERINGTON and attending craft markets under the club s banner. After some thought and research I have bought a Treasurer: JOHN FENN woodturner s smock. Member 2: BOB HIGGINS David Buskell has maintained the club s links with our twinned club COWA in the USA. This July our Club Night Member 3: RON GRACE will be on the second Wednesday to accommodate a visit from Mike Reggio and his wife. Mark Baker will be demonstrating that evening. Let s make it a memorable evening for our American friends has been a successful year. With members assistance 2016 will be equally successful. We have seen a number of professional demonstrators using this method to quickly sharpen their tools during demonstrations. James Cassidy and I purchased a similar Kit at the D & M tool show which was produced by Trend with a handy DVD which shows you how to sharpen a number of every day items and tools.
