October 2014 Chairman Stan Lax Tel : Secretary Brian Haggath Tel Welcome to the October edition of our club magazine. It has been gratifying to see the increase and variety of both products and producers appearing in the table-top displays. They are a wonderful reminder of the depth of talent existing within our club and source of inspiration to our newer turners. They remind us that excellence can be achieved by mortals and not just those rarefied genii who demonstrate on the professional circuit. This month is no exception. Thank you all and long may you keep it up! Table-Top Turn-Out 3rd September Carved Plate Norman & Dianne Sanders Pomander, Box, Apple, Box on stand: Mick McGee Burr bowl and very large Goblet!: Nigel Coates. Segmented bowl: Ian Robson Bowl of fruit: Alan Jobling Large Platter: Dave Johnson Talking of rarified genius... Here are pictures of two of the items Nikos Siragas will be making during his all day demonstration on Sunday November 9th. See Brian for tickets. 3.00
Nikos Siragas at Home Last month, whilst on holiday in Crete, I had the opportunity to go and see Nikos Siragas at his gallery in the coastal town of Rethymnon. Having seen his advert many times in the Woodturning magazine, I have often thought that it would be brilliant to spend some time woodturning in such a beautiful place like Crete but, like many things, I have never quite got around to it. However, since I was close by, I ed Nikos, and received an invitation to come over and see him. My wife Sheila and I were warmly welcomed by Nikos and his English wife Frances who immediately provided iced coffees for us whilst we talked. Nikos was introduced to woodworking as a child by his Grandfather who was a carpenter, and to woodturning by a friend who suggested setting up a woodturning business together to sell to the gradually developing tourist industry in Rethymnon. Nikos has since developed into a world renowned artist who demonstrates in many parts of the world and who produces, as the pictures show, beautiful objects, both turned and carved. Nikos was very interested to hear about how my interest in turning developed, and also about the Teesside Woodturners. He asked of course about the lathe that he would be using. He has been asked to demonstrate on some very dodgy lathes in the past, apparently one time having to try and follow the lathe around the floor as he turned! I assured him that with our Silverdrive lathe, it would only be him who would be doing the moving. The time passed very quickly and after well over an hour, Sheila and I felt that we ought to let Nikos and Frances get on with serving their customers, so we left saying that we would be looking forward to seeing them in November, and went to look for a nice Greek lunch. Dick Simpson

His sale of tools raised And... late news.. the club has decided to buy his Axminster Lathe raising a further 175. (Message from David Muckle RPT)
24th September: The Late Turn -Out! A special thanks to Dennis Wake: 4 Bowls : Worth waiting for! A Little Something for Christmas. Septembers' Pro Demo by Gerry Marlow RPT It was another excellent demo by Gerry who was making a return visit to us. He started off by explaining what he was going to do (make a flashing Christmas decoration) and why he was using the Material ( Lime ) instead of Sycamore. Lime being easier to hollow on a demo but not as good for retaining definition when texturing. He first turned a globe freehand and then hollowed it and reversed it to turn the base finial shoulder and then textured using the Little Elf tool supplied by Henry Taylor. After adding some colour and then Lime paste he started to turn the base finial. Once complete he turned the cap and showed how to insert the little flasher unit and how to make the on/off switch work by inserting a very small spigot into the cap. The whole was then polished and assembled using super glue and a small piece of leather string added to hang it from. After it was completed it was presented to the club by Gerry for us to sell off to aid the Air ambulance which is the club's chosen charity. ( was raised.) All in all a really good demo with plenty of hints and tips and a lot of humour from Gerry. Gerry will be making a return visit to us next September and you can see him again at the show in November when he will be on the RPT stand demonstrating to the public. David Muckle RPT
Spiral Turning: Backroom Demo by David Muckle RPT There are times when words fail and a sequence of pictures tells the story better. (Especially when you have a really good photographer like Randal Marr standing next to you!) David 'knocked up' another superb goblet in quick time (left) and then showed us how to make an 'open' spiral on the elegantly tapered stem. (right). He went on to the first stage of sanding, explaining that the full job is a labour of love and there are no short cuts. Even so, the final product is significantly more attractive than a standard stem. If Watson and Crick had seen this I'm sure they would have had their inspiration earlier. Thanks again Dave- another real revelation!.. And Thank You Randal for the excellent pictures.
Table-top Turn-Out 31st September (oops!) 3 Goblets, Laburum Wing Bowl and Sycamore bowl: Mick McGee 2 Darkwood Vases with Yew Inserts: Alan Jobling?Teak Bowl & Goblet: Bandsaw Alan 2 Bowls : David Muckle RPT In this month's edition I have experimented with a few changes: - putting text over the pictures allows us to make them bigger so we can see more detail. If that causes problems for readers please let me know. I have also been looking at using more pictures to try and sequence the steps in demos, perhaps making them easier to copy. I would welcome more articles from members, especially on making things and I would really favour those supported by pictures. Over to you... Abrasive Bargains Pete R John Oldham, who runs our club shop for us, needs to unload 'Abranet' stock to make way for a new stock of velcro-backed 'Rhinogrip'. Remaining stocks of 120, 150 & 400 grit at 25 x1000 mm are on sale at 50p per roll. Ideal for spindle turning. Please return any empty plastic sandersealer bottles and finish bottles; it is only by re-cycling them that we manage to keep the price so low!
