1 July/August 2018 Marge Hunt Editor Post Office Box Prescott, Arizona President s Message Well here we go, Woodturners - turning away from the first half of the year and turning towards the 2nd half of 2018! In the business world, July is always the time for reflection on what has been accomplished in the preceding months and also the time to review goals and objectives for the next half of the year. Your Board of Directors is doing that this month. We are reviewing all of the goals we developed in January to see what goals we met, what we did right, where we can improve and of course, did we miss anything. A quick review will show that we have accomplished quite a lot in the first six months. We have had a couple of world class visiting turners demonstrate at our club. We have also had a few of our world class PAW members demonstrate their skills and talent for us. I never cease to be amazed at the talent within the Prescott Area Woodturners. Of course we feel that the biggest project we planned, worked towards and completed was the purchase of a new Lathe for the club. This was not done on a whim; many months of planning, research and worrying about details went into this decision. In the end, the decision was put to the club membership for approval and I am happy to say that we had an overwhelming positive response and in fact, a 98 % positive vote by membership to purchase the new lathe. 1

2 The brand new Jet Lathe was assembled by club volunteers just before the June meeting and was unveiled a few hours later at the meeting. Two of our most senior members were invited to say a few words about the history of the club and then were invited to turn the "first bowl" on the new club lathe. Our two newest club members were then presented with the "rough turned first bowl" for them to take home and finish. Results are expected soon. So, a fond farewell to the first six months of the year as we look forward to the second half. We have some great demonstrations lined up plus other club activities, sales, picnics etc. It's going to be fun and we look forward to everything the final half of 2018 has to offer. 3 May 12 & 13, 2018 Sale on Courthouse Square The selling space is set up on Friday evening. Sales kept Treasurer Dennis Egan busy all day Saturday and Sunday. Other sellers were not quite so busy... Easy to laugh at this picture - until you realize that it was staged. All kidding aside, sales for the weekend were good. Lots of interest in turning demonstrations. 3

4 PAW General Meeting Saturday May 19 At this meeting the results of the Challenge between Wayne Hunt and Jim Winge were revealed. Hunt created a basket from the log which was foisted upon him, and used the remainder to make Easter eggs and bunnies. Winge felt forced (segmenting is not his thing) to create what became an attractive segmented piece. Member Mike Bellsmith, a photographer, gave the program. He used PowerPoint to emphacise various suggestions that would improve pictures we take of our work. Members then made use of several diffuser boxes set up around the room to take pictures of their work. Mike was available for advice and assistance. 4

5 June 9 General Meeting Before the meeting began, a team of members assembled the Jet 1640 lathe that the club had purchased. Notice that the instructions are open... Once assembled and minimally tested, the lathe was covered with a tarp until the Board of Directors unveiled it at the meeting. Don Milburn introduced Don Jordan and John Garner, two original members of Prescott Area Woodturners. They shared portions of Newsletters from those early days. 5

6 Jordan and Garner were the first to turn on the new lathe. The bowl begun by Jordan (who shaped the outside) and Garner (who shaped the inside) was turned over to Mike Bellsmith and Dave Madden, two of our newer members. They will complete the turning process and finish the bowl The Club with then decide how best to use this creation. The program for the day was presented by member Walt Spencer. He owns a coring system that is used to remove several bowl blanks from a single large piece of wood. Unfortunately, on this day the coring knives kept seizing. Days later, tests at the YEI building revealed that the power source used at the time had insufficient amperage. Given good power Spence was able to use the corer without incident. Spence will reprise this demonstration at a future meeting. 6

7 Tuesday Breakfasts Every Tuesday morning there is an informal gathering of woodturners. They meet at the Prescott Junction Restaurant at or before 7:30 a.m. Members get regular scheduling information via . After breakfast they often go to a member's shop for a short demonstration. (Demonstrations are on summer hiatus. Look for s with schedule updates.) 7

8 Subject: Bead bowls update Hello Walter, PAW IS GENEROUS I had an art workshop in the west valley Banner Thunderbird with a fun group of kids. Many of the oncology kids were sleeping or receiving treatment at the time of my visit so I left 4 of the turned bowls with the child life staff. They were very excited to give the bowls to kids later in the day. Jim Winge - blue stained bowl Phillip Bird - White ash with termite patterns Bill McDonald - patchwork with zebra, walnut, ash, maple, mahogany, etc. Walter Spencer - Bubinga maple patchwork Another bowl found a homethis little guy named Westin was in the NICU program :) Hello Walter, More bowls were given to kids at Phoenix Children's yesterday. Philip Bird = spalted maple went to a baby on the NICU Joe Carr = maple, purple heart went to the boy in the photo that is coping with a lifelong chronic illness. He was thrilled! 9 2018 Empty Bowls Event PAW donates to the Empty Bowls Event each summer, this year on September 16. On that Sunday you will see long lines of people on Courthouse Square, waiting to buy a bowl of soup donated by local chefs. Their ticket for soup entitles them to choose a bowl from the array of donations displayed on long tables. Monies collected support our local Food Bank. Keep this in mind as you choose your next turning blank. Let's see if we can top the total of 85 bowls that were donated last year! Turned bowls can be submitted at any general meeting. 9

11 LIBRARY NEWS Prescott Area Woodturners maintains an extensive library, consisting of books, magazines and DVD's with ideas and instructions useful to woodturners. Karel Armstrong did a yeoman's job organizing all this material. You will find it in tubs at the back of the meeting area. Management of this resource has been assumed by Barbara Walter. At each meeting you will find her near the tubs that comprise the Library. She will be happy to check out your choice and/or to check it back in again. The PAW library continues to grow as new books, magazines, and DVDs are added. In order for members to know what is available, new media will be listed in the newsletter. At the PAW Library - Two recently purchased books: Woodturning Techniques by Michael O'Donnell Learn the process of turning from an internationally renowned turner with this practical guide that covers materials, equipment and machinery, how to store timber, safety, tools, sanding, and much more. Even complex techniques are made simple with O'Donnell's logical manner of instruction. Decorating Turned Wood: The Maker's Eye by Liz O'Donnell and Michael O'Donnell???? Shall we purchase Brilliant Finishes for Wood Turners a DVD by Ted Sokolowski? Two hours of different techniques. Good Reviews on line.
