Meeting at TJC West May 12, 2018 Worth s Words Hi fellow woodturners! Rudy Lopez did a really good job demonstrating last month! His explanation of tools used and techniques was excellent, and nothing went wrong other than his winged bowl had pretty floppy wings due to 1/16 inch thickness now that s thin! For those of you who did not take his hand-on class, you really missed out. Most of us who attended expressed that he was one of the best, or maybe the best, instructor we have ever had. He came around to each of us checking on progress and gave personalized and detailed instructions for both of the projects we worked on. My wife and I enjoyed his company Saturday evening and fed him one of my world-class steaks. I would have preferred to awaken after the sparrows Sunday morning, but I had to get Rudy to the airport by 6:00 AM. Dennis Lorenz, Bill Preston and I turned a bunch of tops last Saturday at Tyler Mini Makers Faire. The expressions on the children s faces were still fabulous when we said, The top is yours after they successfully spun a top. We had a blast. We took about seventy tops and turned about fifty more on two lathes, and ran out of energy at about 5 PM. If you have not yet paid your 2018 dues it s not too late. 5 July Meeting Pictures (Continued) East Texas Woodturners Fact-Sheet We meet once a month (usually on the second Saturday) at 9:00 AM at Tyler Junior College West, room 104. At our monthly meetings, there is a show and tell table, an open library (hundreds of DVDs and books), a raffle for tools and/or gift certificates, and a demonstration. Oh, yeah there is always lots of discussion and opinions don t be afraid to ask! Please visit our web page at - also, find us on Facebook look for East Texas Woodturners. Take a look at the Mentor Program on our web page to see contact information on 15 mentors that will help you with turning situations. There is also information on ETW s vast library resources (see Library ). And for dues information, click on Membership Form. Also once a month (usually one week after our normal meeting), a lot of us gather at Paul Coppinger s shop in Mineola for MOST (Mineola Open Shop Turning). This is a come-and-go hands-on event, where you can turn on one of seven mini lathes, ask questions, or just watch. See MOST Day on the web page. ETW participates in the Beads of Courage program this is a national program where kids undergoing various medical procedures (usually cancer) are awarded beads for these procedures and need a container for their beads. See for additional information. SWAT (Southwest Association of Turners) has an annual symposium in August it is a 2-1/2 day event usually held in Waco at the convention center. The 2015 meeting had about 850 attendees, 50 vendors, a variety of demonstrations, and a gallery of beautiful turnings. See for more details and cost information. 7 I have a friend who has 100+ acres NE of Jefferson. He has several burl trees. He has a lot of Oak, Cedar and Elm that were blown down in April storms. He would like to see the wood put to use rather than rot on the ground. Jefferson would be a pretty good trip for those out toward Grand Saline, Mineola, Van and points beyond. But I bet some have traveled further than that. I will probably not be at the next meeting as it is the day before Mother s Day and my wife has made weekend plans. There will be a gallery drawing and a tool drawing. The tool drawing will include two large lathes (Robust and praxis) and three smaller (Jet 1221) lathes) plus many other items.
