John Byl did an outstanding presentation of construction and design of what I thought was the simple 3 legged stool. Thanks John for sharing your shortcuts and design features on your stools. John went over all of the steps, tools and techniques to turn and assemble a stool. Thanks again for a great demo. June features Capt Eddie on the lathe. Eddie is going to fill us in on the ins and outs, ups and downs and around the world on the YOYO. Eddie will walk us through the steps to turn and assemble a yoyo. This is a great item to do on any size lathe; Eddie will be turning on the club s new 12 mini. This is a great item to turn for and with kids and we will have a challenge on this project to Tres Lennep be judged in August. Knowing Eddie, he will have a number of design enhancements and will set the standard for turned yoyos. I want to again thank those involved with the Freedom pen project, we are well on our way to producing the largest number of pens our club has ever turned in. We have over 1400 pen kits that were donated to the club by Ochsner ready to be turned, we are also in need of pen blanks, those who can cut blanks or turn pens for the Freedom Pen projects see Eddie Castelin or Joe Kelly. This is a great project both as a skill builder on the lathe and a way to pay back to those who help protect us. October is fast approaching and we are selling tickets for Cindy Drozda weekend Oct 23 & 24. 8 The Challenge has been Issued Turn 2010 Freedom Pens by July 4, WE MADE OUR GOAL!!!!! 2664 Pens to date To date, the Bayou Woodturners have turned out 2664 pens for Freedom Pens in We have well surpassed our goal of 2010 pens by July 4th. The Bayou Woodturners have turned and donated over 58% of the total donations for (Worldwide) We have almost 1000 pens out being turned at this time and we still need your help. If you can cut blanks, drill blanks, glue tubes, mill ends or any of the other activities associated with Freedom Pens, step up to the plate this month. We also have over 1,700 pen kits on their way thanks to a generous donation by Ochsner Foundation. We will need blanks and are developing a plan to award points for that help. Joe will also need help with kits. If you d like to spend an enjoyable afternoon in his company, just get in touch with the Sarge and lend a hand. If you can just offer material and support, it s all for a great cause. Step up and be in that number. 10 News & Notes Making your own Star Block Meeting Minutes Our very brief business meeting began at 9:06 a.m. Let's start out by thanking all who made this year's S.K.E.W. such a success, especially Richard Corley, who organized the event and provided the food. Cindy Drozda will be here the weekend of October Charges for the weekend demo are $60.00, and $ for the hands on. Richard Corley is now collecting checks for the events, but will hold them until October. Ochsner has presented the club with a substantial check for the Freedom Pen Project. So far this club alone has turned more than half the pens donated in 2010 for the project. We're hoping to schedule one more pen turn-a-thon before the end of the year, and if you can help out, by boring out and gluing up blanks if not by turning pens, it would be greatly appreciated. We still have $ in the library budget to purchase materials. If anyone has something they would like to see in the library, please let us know. It looks like Binh Po may be available to demonstrate for the club next year, either in the spring or fall. We'll let you know as soon as the details are finalized. 12 Headstock continued from page 1 Corley is taking checks for the hands on. Don t be left out of what will be a great experience turning with Cindy. Looking forward, we have booked Binh Pho for Oct 8 th, 9 th and 10 th for Binh will be doing a weekend demonstration on our regular meeting weekend and will follow up with 1 day of hands on. As we get closer to that date we will publish additional information. As the weather turns hot and our shops get a bit toasty, don t forget to keep an eye on the thermometer, drink plenty of water and work either early in the morning or when things cool off in the afternoon. July will feature a whole meeting on safety in the shop; I would strongly recommend that you make this meeting. We will have 2 doctors speaking and will be covering as many subjects on safety that time will allow. June s meeting will have gallery and a wood raffle; I hope to see everyone there to watch Eddie do tricks on the lathe and tricks with his magic yoyos. Joel Blazek President, Bayou Woodturners R.J. 13 100 Elodie St Directions to June Meeting From New Orleans take I-10 heading west to Veterans Blvd. Turn left onto Veterans and go to David Drive. If you don't see the K-Mart on the corner, you turned the wrong way. Turn left on David Dr. Go South for about 2 1/4 mile. You will cross Airline Hwy and go over a bridge where David Drive turns into Dickory Ave. Be careful not to speed in these areas, police are everywhere! You will pass Dock Av. at the light on your right. Dickory Ave. is only a mile long and at the end, you will first turn right on Gardner then left onto Hickory Ave. Stay on Hickory for two miles. After you cross Jefferson Hwy. at River Road turn right and go two blocks. Turn right on to Elodie Ave. You're just about there! As you go up Elodie about 100 yards, you will see a red brick building. Round the curve and turn left into the Parking lot marked "Enter."

14 The Bayou Skew The Bayou Woodturners' Newsletter Reserve Your Spot Now for Cindy Drozda s Hands On Workshop As you all know by now Cindy Drozda will be here on October 23rd through the 27th. We have her scheduled for a two day weekend demonstration followed by three one day hands on workshops with 7 people each day. The weekend fee will be $60.00 and cover both days. This will include drinks, snacks and lunch. I am compiling a list of what we want her to demonstrate and will post it next news letter. The hands on workshop will be priced at $ per turner per day. So far I have 14 people signed up for this so get your checks to me soon to reserve a spot. If we have more turners sign up than we have spots we will go to a lottery the same as we have done in the past. You can visit her website at and see her works.
