Artistic Woodturners Newsletter 21 July 2018 Meeting was called to order by Mike Demaline, president. A good crowd was present 27 members, 2 newly joining members and 8 vistors. Among the visitors were a photographer and a reporter from the Pensacola News Journal who will be preparing an article about the club for the paper. Mike related that this year s KidsKamp was successful and enjoyed by kids and adults alike. Eleven members participated in the event. For those of you who might not know what KidsKamp is, it is a week s respite camp sponsored by UWF for foster parents caring for youth in state custody. A week s events are planned for the kids as they stay in UWF dorms. AWT provides for one day of the kids activities, teaching elementary turning skills and ensuring that each kid finishes with a turned object that he or she may keep. Not everyone who participated is pictured; kudos to everyone who turned out.
Mike informed us all that next month s meeting will again start early, at 8 AM, due to a conflict with activities scheduled by our landlord, Seaside Squares. We would have far fewer conflicts if we were to change our meeting time to the second Saturday of the month rather than the third. An questionnaire will be going out to each current member soon addressing this possible change. It is important that each of you respond with your approval or disapproval. The timing for any such change would yet be to be determined.
Everyone filing in and finding a seat. Full show and tell table and auction items. Fully engaged in learning some new skills.
Show and Tell Adron s segmented hot air balloon a rare Demaline hollowform from solid wood! Drozda lidded boxes are darned difficult! See, I do turn some the wood I buy here!

Our visiting demonstrator was Fred Messer, who hails from Gautier, Missisippi. He is a trained physicist and mathematician and machinist who has been woodturning since His topic today was the creation of tool handles, utilizing aluminum fittings that allow tools to be removed from the handles for sharpening or storage. Fred makes his own aluminum fittings and offered for sale this day some he has made. Fred very generously donated aluminum grips to fit the levers on our Jet lathe and several tools handles for later auction. Using dry blanks - purchased or rough green turned and allowed to dry Fred fixes the handle blank into a spigot chuck, turns the blank roughly round and bores each end. Tail end is bored just deeply enough to hold an aluminum end plug (which permits future re-turning or refinishing on the lathe), while the tool end is counterbored deeply enough to contain a tool holder fitting and further bored far enough to allow the entire tool to be captured. This second diameter is 1/64 th larger than the tool diameter. The shape of the handle is up to the user. Fred demonstrated turning the Sorby-shape handle.
A Sorby handle to imitate.
Fred uses a simple modified spindle steady rest that captures the end of the handle, to allow controlled boring at the tailstock end. Once the spindle is turning within the steady, the tailstock is backed away and boring done by a drill bit secured in a handle, depth of bore marked by a piece of tape on the drill bit. A very short 45 degree angle turned on the end of the blank allows it to be captured in the hole in the steady. For 2 or 3 select diameters, handles can also be fabricated directly from aluminum stock.
Rounded stock secured in spigot chuck for further turning. Note short bevel turned on tail stock end. Note the aluminum grips for our lathe banjo and tailstock. The tool rest is homemade and is the one that the steady is clamped to with a single C-clamp. The portable tool holder slips off the stalk and fits securely inside a 5 gallon bucket for transport. The sorby shaped handle has a maximum diameter 2 ½ inches back from the tool end and a minimum diameter approx 2/3 the length of tool back from the tool end. After marking these points with a pencil, cut in slightly at the maximum with a parting tool and part into the desired minimum at the distal point. There is no absolute minimum just so long as you remember you cannot turn into your boring or you will cut your handle in two.
Work your shape downhill from each end toward your minimum point. Fred uses a bowl gouge for his shaping. He declined to demonstrate a skew! John Byl made a cameo appearance here, shaping a tool handle with a fitting that will accommodate an allen wrench. The back side of the handle, holding an aluminum plug, is turned slightly concave, to allow it to stand on end on any flat surface.
