2 More about Carl: Eccentric woodturning by Carl Cummins I was attracted to woodturning starting in the mid 's with only brief opportunities to give it a try. However with no time nor place for a lathe I was unable to pursue it until shortly after I retired in Then I got my lathe, built a small shop, and started turning almost daily. I've read every book about turning I could find in libraries, watched every DVD I could get my hands on, and received help from more experienced turners including Bruce Gibson and Bob Henry in the form of lessons, encouragement, and free wood! My initial attraction to woodturning was from the beauty of wood combined with the fascination of sculpting wood with hand-held tools, plus the inherent symmetry of traditional forms such as candlesticks, bowls, banisters, vases, etc. However the first time I saw the asymmetric works of Jean-François Escoulen, my fascination shifted to a new and unexpected direction. Since then I have explored all varieties of multi-axis techniques I could find, primarily works by JFE but also Mark Sfirri, Barbara Dill, and others. The high point of my multi-axis turning happened when I attended the Escoulen School in France in a class taught by JFE himself. We started with turning between centers, then moved on to using the special chucks he invented allowing eccentric turning without the confines of a tail center. Since then most of what I've done with these chucks is to imitate works of JFE. Perhaps with more time I will find new shapes of my own. Page 2 of 9

Howard King, I have an industrial RBI 25 inch surface sander for $300, a Delta 1/2 inch shaper for $250 and a 10 inch Powermatic #66 table saw, 3 phase motor for $1000.
