I trust that you have all been busy in your shops making Holiday-related items for friends and relatives or up-coming craft shows. I hope you all liked last month s meeting with Ron Campbell. We have another great meeting on tap for November with Thomas Wirsing as our guest demonstrator. Thomas is a well-known turner and past president of the AAW. He will demonstrating platters for which he is wellknown. The cover of the most recent Craft Supplies U.S.A catalog features one of Thomas s pieces. Thomas will also be teaching a platters class on Monday the 13 th, but by the time you read this the class will probably be full. Check with me if you want to be a last minute addition to the class pending availability. These classes we sponsor with our guest turners are a fantastic way to build on your turning skills and a great bargain to boot. Also for the meeting, don t forget to bring your completed piece for the president s challenge (probably a pen). We will be having a new set of blanks of some type for the next challenge, but that finished piece will not be due back until January, so you have plenty of time to work on it over the holiday season. This month, November, we are also doing a food drive for the Holy Spirit Church food pantry. Please don t forget to bring in your donations. It s a great way to give back to the church and to the community. Our club exhibition at The Franklin Park Conservatory is coming LIBRARY ORNAMENTS As it is getting colder outside, it is time to think about Christmas. Turned ornaments are always a welcomed gift and opportunity to create a family heirloom. Fran Blais Paul Courtright Bob Dadik Bill Gockenback Max Kacksetter Most months during the COW meeting season, which runs from September through May, the club president will supply wood for what is called the President s Challenge. Generally, the president will bring in or so relatively identical pieces of wood. Each month the wood being of some different size and/or type. Members will then take those pieces home and bring them back the next month as finished turned pieces. There are not many rules surrounding what you can make. It might be encouraged that the piece consists primarily of the original wood taken home, but additions of other woods or materials is allowed. Any type of embellishment; burning, carving, coloring, whatever you can think of, is also allowed and even encouraged. Do your best, make it simple or elaborate, do what you will. Members will then vote each month on the finished pieces for best-in-show and most-creative. $25 gift cards from Woodcraft and Woodwerks are given as prizes for the winners in these two categories. Now, even though I am talking about voting and prizes and winners, really the club is the winner. These pieces are collected and saved throughout the year and then sold in our May auction. That auction is one of our primary fund-raising activities. There is no requirement to participate but give it a shot, it s fun and it helps the club. You may find too that it ups your game a little. HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH Nelson Meyer Leslie Nelson Dave Phelan Dan West Steve Wagner What can I say? What a great place! Easy access, free parking, great meeting space. In addition, if you didn t know, we store our large lathe and A/V equipment, and other equipment there ALL FOR FREE! Needless to say, our relationship with the church is vital to our club. Throughout the year there are several (not many really) things we do in exchange for our room and board, as it were. First and foremost, we donate turned items for their silent auction which occurs over a weekend in August. We ask that members donate one or more items to this cause. The choice is yours, bowl, pen, peppermill, scoops, whatever you make. Obviously, you can donate more than one, but please help us out with this, it s not much to ask that each member donate an item or items to this important cause. We also use a meeting or two throughout the year to bring in donations to the church s food pantry which is another easy way for us to contribute to both the church and to the community.

3 ! OF!5 3 SAFETY NEWS - HUH? Marty Gottesman, MD Safety Officer Something not usually discussed when talking about woodturning safety is hearing protection. Mostly it isn t an issue as lathes don t usually generate enough noise to be dangerous. The problem is that preparation of woodturning projects often uses a number of LOUD machines such as chain saws, table saws, band saws, grinders, surface planers and other tools. Dust collection systems often add to the din (background noise). When it comes to hearing it is the intensity and duration of the sound that are most important. The following chart shows the sound intensity of many shop tools. The higher the number the more damage the sound can do to your ears. The numbers are in decibels (dbs). Because sounds above 85 dbs can cause hearing damage, if you use any of the tools in the following chart you NEED proper hearing protection. REMINDER: The library is one of the more popular benefits of club membership. Last year we saw an increase in the number of items borrowed and the number of different club members borrowing items. To ensure as many club members as possible have the opportunity to borrow items from the library, the club enacted the following library rules: Only members may check out items, You may check out only two (2) items, You must return all previously checked out items before checking out any more items, and You must return checked out items at the next monthly club meeting. If, for some reason you cannot, let the librarian know in advance, if possible. If you wish to donate an item to the library, as many of our club members have, please give the item to Robin Moro, our librarian. Also, if you know of a good woodturning DVD or book that the club does not have, please tell Robin and she ll add to our library wishlist.

This month I want to closely look at a small Southern Red Pine log I brought back from a Florida camping trip a few weeks ago. Please bring your favorite identified wood specimens for all of us to look at and learn from. Dennis NOVEMBER FEATURED DEMONSTRATOR - TOM WIRSING Tom Wirsing was born in Roanoke, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, an historic center of American furniture building and woodturning. Tom s dad was an expert on American period furniture and had a well-equipped workshop which included a lathe. Tom began turning wood as a young boy. After graduating from Roanoke College with a degree in Physics, Tom began traveling extensively. He lived and worked in Europe, Asia, and nine US States. The lathe in his dad s workshop became distant memory. About 20 years ago Tom found himself working for the Hewlett-Packard Company in Chicago and living in a house with a spacious basement. He bought a lathe and began turning wood again. At first he made mostly furniture but, almost by chance, he attended a demonstration by Richard Raffan, a well-known Australian woodturner. Richard took a rough piece of American black cherry timber and turned it into a wonderful bowl. Tom was hooked.

5 ! 5 OF 5! Thus began Tom s interest in creating art pieces on the lathe. He now turns primarily platters and bowls from a variety of woods. His favorite wood is figured maple. Tom is a member of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW), a non-profit organization of woodturners which has 15,000 members worldwide. Tom served two terms as president of the AAW. He also served two terms as president of the Front Range Woodturners in Denver. For more information on the AAW visit Tom has demonstrated at the AAW Symposium, the Utah Woodturning Symposium, the Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposium, Turnfest in Australia, as well as many AAW chapters across the USA and Canada. In addition to turning wood, Tom enjoys building furniture. He has built tables, beds, chests of drawers, cabinets and a variety of other furniture. Tom is an avid traveler. He has visited all 50 US states, around 70 countries and all seven of the world s continents. Tom resides with his wife Melinda on a ranch in north Boulder County, in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where he grazes Angus cattle, builds furniture, and turns wood.
