We are coming up on the holiday season where we should reflect on family and friends and how they have impacted our lives. Three years ago, I discovered a whole new group of friends, C.O.W., that has allowed me to explore a long lost love for woodturning. I had been away from woodturning for basically 35 years. I d like to share one of my cherished possessions, that I made for my mother. I turned all the pieces my junior year of high school. When our son was born, she gifted it back to me. 2 P A G E 2 October Mentoring Sharpening We met on October 20th at Wood Werks for a demonstration on sharpening. Thanks to Steve Wagner for putting together another great session, and to Wood Werks for hosting the event. Sharpening - Sharp tools are essential to good woodturning. John Jordan, a prominent turner from Tennessee, always advised his students to, sharpen before you think you need to. Sharpening Techniques - Bruce Kerns, Mike Trucco, and Rich Colvin demonstrated set up three stations to demonstrate the way they sharpen tools. Bruce uses the conventional Wolverine system. Mike uses a similar system design by the famed cowboy hat turner, Johannes Michelsen. Rich brought his versatile Tormek system. Max Kackstetter also showed how to use the adjustable tool rest from Reed Gray called the Robo Rest. Questions and Answers - There was plenty of time after the demos for ques- November Mentoring Beads of Courage Bowl We had a good question and answer session about how to make a Beads of Courage bowl for our Children s Hospital project. Bruce Kerns and Max Kackstetter brought several examples of different styles and discussed a variety of techniques. Thanks to Woodcraft for hosting the event. M A N Y G O O D T U R N S

3 Safety Corner P A G E 3 NOISE LEVELS WHEN TURNING WOOD from an article in the October 2018 issue of the American Woodturner by Jeff Chelf The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) says a prolonged exposure to noise levels above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. A wood lathe by itself produces 65 to 70 decibels (db). Mr. Chelf s research showed cutting at the lathe often fell within acceptable noise levels. The exceptions were using texturing tools and cutting hard, dense woods. Roughing started out loud and declined in noise level as the wood became more round. QUOTE: Hearing protection is a sound investment Examples: Texturing: 100 db Oak: 100 to 105 db Other hard species: 90 db ~Anonymous CONCLUSION: Wear hearing protection at the lathe, especially for long sessions. A decibel meter app is available for smart phones. Run you own tests to see what the noise level is in your shop around the lathe, and also with other tools, such as a table saw. Shop Tip An inexpensive furnace filter makes a great surface for spraying small parts with lacquer or other aerosol finishes. (The 25 x 20 filter in the photo costs less than $3.) The fiberglass inside the filter absorbs most of the overspray instead of allowing it to bounce back as it does with hard surfaces. The metal grid provides a nice supporting surface for the parts with very little contact. Make a small spraying booth with 1/4 plywood by adding 3 tall sides to a bottom sheet. 4 Community Outreach P A G E 4 WOOD SHOP CLASS DEMONSTRATIONS Bruce Kerns and Max Kackstetter were invited to Crestview High School by long-time industrial arts teacher, Larry Barnes, to demonstrate woodturning to six woodworking classes. Crestview is a rural high school of about 400 students located west of Ashland, Ohio. There aren t many high schools that still have industrial arts programs. Crestview s wood shop is well equipped, and has metal-working capabilities as well. They also have a agricultural education department. The students do a lot of pen turning, including molding pen blanks with acrylics. The pens are a big fund raiser at the school s annual craft show the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Many of the student s make segmented bowls for a class assignment. They turn almost exclusively with carbide tools. Mr. Barnes wanted Bruce and Max to turn with conventional tools so the students could see the possibilities. They had two lathes set up in the wood shop class room. Turning green wood was a big hit. One of the highlights of the day was the high school s annual Thanksgiving dinner. The students brought in side dishes like cans of corn and dinner rolls. The kitchen staff prepared the meal. Bruce and Max got to eat a good meal and meet some of the other staff members.

6 P A G E 6 Family Oleaceae (Olive family) Ash is in the genus Fraxinus, which is Latin for spear. Check out the shape of the leaves. They look like spear points. Wood for Turning Ash Habitat Riverbanks from eastern North America westward to the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains. The emerald ash borer has ensured there is a large supply of ash for turning in the short term, but the future of the tree species is in doubt. Ash log Ash bowl Some experiments are being conducted with insecticides and natural enemies, but these solutions are usually practical for urban and suburban trees. That leaves millions of ash trees in natural settings in jeopardy.
