We hope you have enjoyed time with your family and friends during the summer and have remained safe and healthy. Our VP (Scott Gordon) has been busy planning some wonderful learning opportunities for us this coming year. I did want to take the opportunity to share with you some good news. We have over 168 dues paying members. And growing! What an awesome feeling to be apart of such a large group of people that enjoy the art of woodturning. We should all feel proud. We had 31 people donate items for the Church s Festival. I want to personally thank each and everyone of you for your dedication to the club and Holy Spirit, My goal for the year is to get more participation from more members. I am hoping to have your support as we embark on some new avenues for serving our community. I look forward to seeing you at the September meeting. Please feel free to step up an introduce yourself to me. Stay safe and keep learning! Dan West C.O.W. President First Meeting of the Year Shop Tip 4 Wood for 5 Turning C.O.W. Info 6 September 11th is our first meeting of the new season in the basement of Holy Spirit Church on the corner of E. Broad St. and Yearling Avenue Just minutes from I-270 on the East side of Columbus. We have a Meet and Greet from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. If you have any tools or wood to sell or swap bring them then. This month there will be a special sale of donated equipment and tools, including a Jet 1642 variable speed lathe. More information on that sale will be sent out in a separate . Our regular meeting starts at 7:00 pm with a short business meeting. This is followed by a Gentle Critique of projects that club members have brought in to show off and share. You do not have to have a lot of experience to bring in a turned object. It is a good way to get feedback and advice from experienced turners in a constructive and gentle manner. After a short break, we will start our demonstration of the evening. In September, it is going to be a Turners Corner. Four club members will be demonstrating; sharpening, sanding, jam chucks, and the basics of tool use.

2 P A G E 2 Open Shops for Summer 2018 We had a great series of Open Shops this summer. Thanks to Steve Wagner for organizing them, and the volunteers who helped get things set up. These are great opportunities for new and old club members to socialize, and for all of us to learn something new. COW would especially like to thank Leslie and Paul Nielsen, Tom Bommersbach, Rich Colvin, and Mark Damron for hosting the four events. William Butler Yeats Our first Open Shop of the summer was a road trip to Mansfield. Leslie and Paul were good hosts. In addition to Leslie s woodturning, we also got to see Paul s pottery shop. Tom Bommersbach s Open Shop Tom showed us what you can with a small shop. The setting was very nice, and we definitely enjoyed sitting under his shade trees in the back yard. We got to see his homemade Rose Engine/Ornamental lathe. There are some amazing design possibilities with that type of lathe. We also checked out his Tormek wet sharpening system equals firewood. ~Author unknown Mark Damron s Open Shop Mark is a machinist by trade so his shop is full of home made tools such as a hollowing system he markets and a sphere shaping jig. The rain kept us inside, but, as usual, we ate well. M A N Y G O O D T U R N S

4 Ohio State Fair Once again this year, the Central Ohio Woodturners demonstrated at the Ohio State Fair, Saturday and Sunday, August 4th & 5th. The attendance in the Cardinal building was down somewhat, but the demonstrators had fun. Other projects made included ice cream scoops, spin tops, goblets, bowls, and duck calls. There were large piles of curls from rough turning green bowl blanks. There were many questions, and several people took C.O.W. flyers. Volunteer demonstrators were Mike Trucco, Nelson Meyer, Leslie Nielsen, Max Kackstetter, Paul Courtright, Jeff Brufladt, Paul Pennock, Robin Moro, Bob Smith, Dan West, Tom Wood, Greg Wallace, and Bruce & Nancy Kerns. (Thanks to Bruce for organizing the event.) If you have never volunteered to demonstrate, you should consider it. We had some first-timers this year and they enjoyed themselves. P A G E 4 LAW OF THE WORKSHOP: Any tool, when dropped, will Safety Tip WOOD ALLERGIES. Our President, Dan West, recently had a nasty encounter with some Chinese Elm. Swollen, red eyes and a puffy face are no fun. For centuries, it's been fairly common knowledge that some woods could hinder your health. As far back as 60 A.D., the Roman historian and naturalist Pliny the Elder described a case where four sol- diers actually died after drinking wine from hip flasks made of yew. Of lesser gravity was the experience of a few German sawyers in the early 1700s. It seems they developed chronic irritation of the nose and eyes, as well as headaches, from sawing bald cypress. What are your chances of a reaction to wood? Statistics say that only 2 to 5% of all people develop an allergic sensitivity to one or more compounds found in wood. But, if you handle a lot of potentially toxic species, and work with them long enough, you increase your chances of an allergic reaction. And, with sufficient exposure, some woods bother almost everyone. Any dust, including wood dust, mildly irritates the sensitive mucous membranes of your nose and eyes, making you sneeze and tear. The dust of some woods such as western red cedar and rosewood can be especially bothersome. See the AAW website for more details and a chart that lists the wood species that are known allergens. Source: Bruce Campbell, Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild roll to the least accessible corner. ~Author Unknown Shop Tip LATHE TOOL CADDY Ever set down your tool on the lathe bed only to have it roll off? I did, that is, until I put together a tool caddy to keep tools temporarily close at hand. The caddy fits over the bed and can be moved so as not to interfere with the work or tailstock. It s designed using ¾" plywood but any wood can be used. Originally, my caddy would hold four tools, but I soon realized that I could add other features. Several holes in the middle hold drive centers. I added a magnet from a computer hard drive to hold small metal parts like Allen wrenches. A hole drilled in the edge holds a pencil. All those little parts that seem to end up in the shavings now have a place while I work. Found in the interior of eastern North America. Less frequent in the Atlantic states. Black walnut logs Cut logs showing sap wood Description Heavy, hard, strong, with a silky sheen.
