If you missed the March meeting you missed the excitement. Well done Frank. Thanks for an exciting demonstration on how to use the skew. Elvie F. Jackson will do a demonstration in May on turning natural edge bowls. June the 9 th will be our annual picnic at Lake Crab Tree Park. Mark your calendars now so you don t forget. Bring your families for a fun day of fellowship, turning, and good food. Bruce Hoover, from Bloxom, Virginia, will do a demonstration on sanding in August I hope to see everyone at the April meeting. 2 PAGE 2 THE TRIANGLE WOODTURNER VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 President s Message As I mentioned at the March meeting The Triangle WoodTurners became an official chapter of the AAW March 4 th, A cake and drinks will be provided at the April meeting to celebrate the occasion. I plan to write a short history of the major accomplishments of the group and welcome any input. items will be in the mail. The exhibition pieces that were not sold at the North Carolina Craft Gallery will be available at the April meeting and checks for the sold From The Internet Our church, St. Paul s Episcopal in Winston-Salem is planning to cut down some large trees to make way for an addition to the church. Our Landscape Committee is considering what to do with the wood from the trees after they are cut down. We want to know what could be made from them and would welcome your advice. There are at least 3 each 36 to 40 willow oaks which will have to come down, a magnolia of at least that size, as well as 8 crabapples of 6 to 8 size. We want to direct those who will take down the trees to preserve the wood for a project such as the one for the N. C. Botanical Gardens. What do you Suggest? Please give me a call at Our April meeting will be a video and there are several breakout sessions scheduled. The breakout sessions are listed in the Programming Tidbits. These have been very successful sessions and I encourage you to attend those that are of interest. I'm having a workshop July 6 th and 7 th featuring Jean Francois Escoulen. There will be space for 12 attendees and 6 lathes. Each attendee will be able to turn 1/2 time. The fee will be $100. Please contact me if you're interested. I will be with my family the week of the April meeting and hope y'all have an enjoyable time. Al Basham TWNC Information Treasurer s Report: Beginning Balance: $11, Income: $ Thanks for your help. 3 VOLUME 11, ISSUE 4 THE TRIANGLE WOODTURNER PAGE 3 March Demonstration was Off Center Turning Multi- Axis Bird Houses By Frank Penta Frank got hooked on multi-axis turning at a previous TWNC breakout session, and has been adapting the method to much of his work including novelty birdhouses which he demonstrated at the March meeting. Frank s favorite material for the birdhouses is Misquite, but most any branch wood will do. It takes Frank 3 to 4 hours to complete one project: so main points for making a birdhouse were presented as follows: Specialty chucks are not necessary for off center turning. Frank used a Oneway 4 jaw chuck The turning blank is first set straight in the chuck as in normal turning. The blank is marked at each of the four jaws with the number corresponding to the jaw. The first offset turning is at jaw number 1, the second at number 2 and so forth. Each offset is sanded and finished before proceeding to the next offset. You can not go back. The roof is always on axis so it will be level with the birdhouse Use toe of skew to do slicing cut for crisp, clean lines, The demonstration was informative and the video tape is recommended viewing. The tape will also show the many examples of multi-axis birdhouses displayed at the demonstration. Notes from the Ray Key Demonstration: Several TWNC members traveled to the Folk Art Center near Black Mountain on March 16 to sit in on the Ray Key demonstration. His demonstration was fun to watch and informative as follows: His first demonstration was a basic bowl. Key points were as follows: Use of a screw chuck greatly increased project speed. You need to learn to cut with both hands, if you want to increase turning speed and improve the quality of your work. Instant glue used with accelerator will go brittle within 3 or 4 months. Do not use accelerator for permanent bonds. Leave rough turned bowls to dry with uniform cross sections to limit cracking. He allows 8 to 10 weeks for drying and does not bother with surface treatments or sealing to prevent cracking. He checks moisture by weight at frequent intervals and will turn the piece when weight stays constant. You can get a much smoother tool finish if the piece is coated with paste wax or mineral spirits prior the final finishing cut. The next project was a small box made from maple. Here are interesting points: The smaller the box the harder to turn. The larger the box the more movement is noticed. Ray likes 2 to 3 in diameter. Boxes are turned end grain. Tools to cut end grain are from worst to best as follows: Parting, Flute Parting, Spindle Gouge, and Skew. Ray Key used a heavily modified spindle gouge for most of his box turning Ray Key s last project was a multi layer box with an Oriental flair. Safety Notes: By Roy Fisher All of us have read and/or heard that woodturning can be a serious health risk. Sounding like a nag, it is strongly advisable to protect yourself from possible reactions to wood and wood dust. A few basic precautions are: Work in a well ventilated area, wash and shower often, wash work clothes daily, wear safety goggles and/or face shield, use dust extraction, wear a dust mask, use a powered respirator, avoid unseasoned wood, avoid plywood and MDF dust, avoid treated lumber, and wear gloves if necessary. Taking sensible precautions will help you enjoy woodworking and live a longer, healthier life. Reference: Woodturning Techniques-Terry Porter
