He started by showing us how he glues up the piece. It is laid up course by course using the jig he has made which has an alignment block with which he sets the course of blocks in place and an index wheel with which he sets the rotation. He uses a flexible plastic artists knife to apply a small amount of glue to the edge of each segment (see picture 07) and holds it in place for 30 seconds or so before moving to the next segment. (see picture 08) Planning the piece is vital to having everything come out right. The whole thing is built up on a solid maple base which is in turn glued to a waste block Kirt then shifted to a piece which he had glued up ahead of time. He started by shaping the outside (see picture 11). This all worked because he had planned the shape in advance so the segments were glued in position to accommodate the final shape of the finished piece. He moved the tailstock up into the hollow of the piece (see picture 11) as a precaution against a possible breakout.. Then he removed the tailstock and went to work on the inside (see picture 12). As he gently removed the edges of the segments we all sort of held our breaths as we could see the shape take form. It was a little strange to be able to see through the piece. Kirt pointed out that unlike most bowls or hollow forms in this case you can see how thick the walls are as you work. He had several pieces on display for us to see. Thanks Kirt for very interesting demonstration. Maybe it will give some of us the courage to try one.

The dues start at $ 25.00, not $35. Again, we are paying by the quarter. Jul-Sep $25, Oct-Dec $20, Jan- Mar $15 and Apr-Jun $10. Spouse is an additional $10, regardless when paid. If you haven t yet paid your dues, please do so now, as we need the money to keep operating. TRAINING - We had a terrific training last Thursday from Becky Hansen, a certified Arborist from Murray City. She brought eleven leaves from local trees and gave us an opportunity to try to identify them. She then corrected all our mistakes ( which were many ) and taught us how to identify the leaves and the trees. She also suggested we pickup two books and a great CD for identification of numerous trees. These can be obtained from the USU Extension Service at 21 st and State in SLC. The first book is Trees of Utah by Brough and Weber. The Second one is A Guide to the Trees of Utah and the Intermountain West by Kuhns. The CD is USU TreeBrowser. I will try to get these before the next meeting and show them to you. If you would like us to pick them up for you, please let me know and we will try to do something that will work for us all. The Club has produced a CD-Rom again this year that covers almost every aspect of the event. There will be video clips as well as photos of virtually every piece in the instant gallery. There will even be freeware picture viewing software on the disk for you to use. The CD is compatible with PC and Mac. The price of $35.00 includes packaging and shipping. If you would like to buy a CD at the club meeting you can take 10% off since we don t have to ship it ($31.50). Call Dick Stucki and let him know to bring one for you. Wear your Face Shield! Dave Anthony gave graphic support to this admonition by showing us parts of a piece that blew up on him. Additionally, we had a brief discussing about the somewhat complex process of sanding. There are a lot of ways to do this, some safe and effective and other not so much I have included the over-view that was handed out at the training on this topic SYMPOSIUM CD s - We still have lots of CD s from the 2003 and prior years. The current one if the best of all. It is loaded with lots of photos of the demonstrators, their projects and a very comprehensive shooting of the Gallery. I promise, if you buy this, you will not be disappointed. SEPTEMBER MEETING - You won t want to miss this. I took the time to go over to Robert s shop last week and looked at some very impressive work he is doing out there. This will also be a good opportunity to see someone else s shop and how it is arranged. He also has planning to show us some very creative techniques for turning bowls, etc. His shop is located at 2159 West Alexander St., ( 2410 S. ) just off Redwood Road a few blocks.

The club was formed in 1988 by a group of active turners. Meetings - first Tuesday of each month at various shops or wood stores who support the club. There are usually refreshments served at 6:30pm with a general meeting and demonstration at 7:00pm. At each meeting we have a Show and Tell of attendees work. It is for everybody, not just the very experienced turners. You are cordially invited to attend our meetings and become a part of the group. For more information may call any of the club officers. You can crack the wood with heat, Use a three layer fold only Do NOT wrap sandpaper around fingers, If too hot to hold it s too hot Use a blast of compressed air between each grit. Never increase the grit of the paper by more than 50% Always keep the abrasive moving. Don t press too hard it will cut better Sand at half the speed you were turning.
