1 Number 129 Utah Woodchips Newsletter September 2012, page 1 Regular Monthly Meeting First Tuesday of every month 7:00 p.m. Hello Wood Turners, September 2012 Message from the President The kids are back in school, the yard work is waning, and I hope we all get the time to get back into the shop. As I said last month, the heat has really been making it punishing in my shop, and I have to admit, I have not done much turning in this heat. I have to say it, I am looking forward to fall. My Grandmother always told me not to wish my life away, and at my age I am understanding that word of caution better and better, but.cooler temperatures sound pretty good right now. I hope you have had better conditions. With the end of the summer craziness, I hope you all get more time in your workshop standing in front of your lathe making shavings. We will meet again at SLCC for September in the Construction Trades building Classroom on the Redwood Road Campus. The venue is working out really well. Thanks again to Chad and his team for hosting us! We will have a visit from Susan and Les of North Woods from Oregon. You can see the they sent inside this newsletter. They will be bringing their trailer full of wood and you will have the chance to take home a really special piece of wood. My thanks go out to Stuart Davey who was our demonstrator in August. We were excited to hear from him again, and he did a great job! You can read more about that in Lauren s article inside. Thanks a ton to Stuart for stepping up and offering to do a demonstration. Hint, hint guys!! Our next training meeting is scheduled in October at Wood Craft. Please me or Lauren Gibbs with your ideas for future training meetings. Our September meeting is coming right up on Tuesday September 4 th at SLCC. Dave Best will be our demonstrator. He will show us a technique for pressure casting. The hospitality time starts at 6:30 and the demo will start at 7:00. Our October meeting is also on the calendar for Tuesday October 2nd at SLCC. Also don t forget the Mountain Green Turn-A-Thon event to be held on Saturday September 8 th. The club will provide a great lunch cooked by Blaine Johns. Plan to bring your lathe for a full day of turning, stories, and exaggerations with friends and fellow turners. (Continued on page 2) Next meeting: Dave Best September 4, 7:00 pm SLCC Construction Trades Bldg W S. (Conifer Way) Directions: From Redwood Road, turn west on Conifer Way which is 4610 South. Follow that street as it bends north and then back west to the second building. Look for the large lettering over a large roll up door that says Construction Trades Building. Please park in either lot B which is right next to the Construction Trades Building or lot C which is just to the west. Avoid blue-striped parking stalls. Lot A is an overflow lot that can also be used. If you park anywhere else, you will get a ticket unless you have a SLCC parking pass. Enter the building by going up the metal stairs under the Construction Trades Building sign, just west of the giant, tanpainted dust collectors. Enter the man door at the top of the stairs on your left, and turn left into the classroom. The Demo will start at 7:00. See page 3 for Stuart Davey demo notes

2 Number 129 Utah Woodchips Newsletter September 2012, page 2 See Page 10 for details on the Mountain Green Turn-A-Thon Utah Woodchips the official newsletter of the Utah Association of Woodturners 2012 to 2013 Club Officers There is always someone to ask a question of and get some help with any turning question. I will need an accurate count of who is going so we can plan for lunch, so please RSVP to Vernita at Vermama@comcast.net and let us know yes or no. Thanks Remember that July was the time to renew your membership to the club. I still think that the $25.00 annual dues is the best value in Woodworking. There are still some who have not paid their dues. Let s make it easy on Joe, and get your money into him right away. Thanks again to Lauren and Ruthann Gibbs who have taken over the newsletter. That is a time consuming undertaking and I really appreciate them for taking on that responsibility! They are doing a great job! Remember to bring your turners challenge and show and tell items to each meeting. Our thanks again go out to Craft Supplies, who provides the Gift Certificates we award for the turners challenge. I am always seeking your input on how we can make the club better, so please send me an message and make your feelings known. Let me know how we can better serve you! woodturnerjay@comcast.net. 3 Number 129 Utah Woodchips Newsletter September 2012, page 3 August 2012 Club Meeting Notes Stuart Davey - Seam Rippers Stuart has made many gadgets to help his wife with her sewing. Starting out he showed us a simple one, a base for holding the ¾ washers she uses to hold patterns in place. It is made by turning a base and putting a dowel in it. Another one is a thread stand for thread spools to rethread bobbins or for cone thread. This one is has a base, a dowel in the middle of the base to hold the thread, and a wire to hold the thread so it is pulled up off the spool. His wife got sore fingers from closing safety pins so he made her a safety pin closer: a handle with a small brass rod with a couple grooves turned into the end. Brace with your thumb and use the grooves to close pins. Brass turns easily on the lathe with regular lathe tools. Stuart told us to make a handle, and put something in it. Stuart then went into detail on his process of coming up with a seam ripper that his wife liked and that met her needs. Throughout this process he found several things that worked great and some that didn t work so well. He went through several handle lengths to find the length that worked best for his wife. He learned that if the hole for the blade is too big it would allow the blade to wiggle side to side even though it fit tight the other direction. He foundthat a round handle would roll around when set down so he made the handle oval. To make his seam rippers Stuart would buy inexpensive rippers, take the cutting tip out of the plastic handle and make a wooden handle and put the cutting tip in it. He has also bought the cutters off the internet. He would make the diameter of the handle the same as the original plastic handle so he could use the plastic cap that came with the original ripper to cover the tip of the cutter. On one of his rippers he made the cap fancier by turning a wooded barrel and glued the plastic cap to it. The ends of the cutters are tapered so when they are pushed into the wood handle, they will wedge in and hold tight. After choosing a small blank of the wood he wants to use, he marks the center of both ends. After deciding how much he wants the cutter to stick out, he drills a 1/8 (or 7/64") hole in one end deep enough to hold the cutter. At the other end, the center is marked and then by going corner to corner he puts two more marks that will be used for the offset turning to make the handle oval. The further apart the two marks, the bigger the oval will be. Stuart then puts a divot on each mark so the stock spur will go into it without splitting the wood. Then using the center holes first, the blank is rounded out. Make sure to leave enough wood on the tail stock end to mount the tail stock into the off-set holes. Then using a gauge and parting tool, Stuart measures and marks the small and large diameter he wants for his oval handle. He uses 5/8 and 5/16. 5/16 is what fits his caps. Then the tail stock is moved to one of the off-set marks and the handle was turned tapering down to the blade end. Now there is air to turn along with the (Continued on page 4)

4 Number 129 Utah Woodchips Newsletter September 2012, page 4 (Continued from page 3) wood. It was turned down to the small diameter mark made earlier. After a little sanding, Stuart switches to the other off-set mark. Now he is turning a lot of air. When this side was turned down to the small diameter mark and sanded, the tail stock was put back on the center mark. Stuart did a very light touch up to blend the parts together and parted the ends off. When done and the cutter is put in, Stuart s wife will have a nice looking and usable seam ripper. We thank Stuart for sharing his turning with us. Lauren Gibbs Stuart s Thread Holder Washer holder See more pictures from Stuart s demo on pages 5-6 One night a wife saw her husband standing over the baby's crib. She stood watching him silently, he looked down with mixed emotions, disbelief, doubt, delight, amazement, enchantment, and skepticism. She slipped her arm around him, "Penny for your thoughts?" she whispered. "It's amazing, how can they make a crib like that for $49.99?"
