1 Number 132 Utah Woodchips Newsletter December 2012, page 1 Regular Monthly Meeting First Tuesday of every month 7:00 p.m. Message from the President Next meeting: Hello Wood Turners, December 2012 I just can t seem to get my mind around the fact that Thanksgiving is already behind us, the Christmas lights are already up and the end of another year is clearly in sight! Although the weather still feels like fall, I think winter is lurking just around the corner waiting to pounce! We are down to just about 3 weeks left before Christmas, so I hope you are farther along on your plans for turned gifts than I am! I hope we all get more time in our workshops standing in front of our lathes making shavings before the holiday. Our first year of meeting at SLCC in the Construction Trades building Classroom on the Redwood Road Campus is almost behind us and the venue is just great. Chad and his team are great hosts, and we want to sincerely thank them again. My thanks go out to Joe Wagner who did a great demo on turning fluted Christmas ornaments. He is always willing to help out others in the club. We had given him some time off from the demo schedule, so we were excited to hear from him again. As always he did a great job! Also as always with Joe, he was a wealth of information on making the jigs and fixtures that help him make his turning look effortless. You can read more about that in Lauren s article inside. Thanks a ton to Joe for stepping up AGAIN! Our December meeting is also on the calendar for Tuesday December 4th at SLCC, for our Christmas party. We will have no Demo, and will have a gift exchange, so get your exchange items ready and wrapped. I am sad to say that I am going to miss my first Christmas party since I joined the club, but Vernita and I will be out of town. I will miss seeing you, so eat something (Continued on page 2) December 4, 6:00 p.m. SLCC Construction Trades Bldg W S. (Conifer Way) Directions: From Redwood Road, turn west on Conifer Way which is 4610 South. Follow that street as it bends north and then back west to the second building. Look for the large lettering over a large roll up door that says Construction Trades Building. Please park in either lot B which is right next to the Construction Trades Building or lot C which is just to the west. Avoid blue-striped parking stalls. Lot A is an overflow lot that can also be used. If you park anywhere else, you will get a ticket unless you have a SLCC parking pass. Enter the building by going up the metal stairs under the Construction Trades Building sign, just west of the giant, tanpainted dust collectors. Enter the man door at the top of the stairs on your left, and turn left into the classroom. The Demo will start at 7:00. See page 3 for notes from Joe Wagner demo

Thanks again to the Gibbs and the Bests for picking up the load. I will see you again in January! Our January meeting is not that far away on Tuesday January 8th at SLCC. PLEASE take note that this is not the first Tuesday, but rather the second one to accommodate for the New Year Holiday. Kip Christensen will be our demonstrator. He always does a great demo, and has a ton of experience to call on. The hospitality time starts at 6:30 and the demo will start at 7:00. I am working hard on filling out the demonstrator schedule for 2013, so I hope some of you will volunteer to do a Demo. Our next training meeting is scheduled on January 20th at Wood Craft. We are still discussing the topic so if you want to keep having the training meeting Please me or Lauren Gibbs with your ideas for future training meetings. We want to present things that you need to learn about. Remember to bring your turner s challenge and show and tell items to each meeting. Our thanks again go out to Craft Supplies, who provides the Gift Certificates we award for the turner s challenge. Ring on finished I am always seeking your input on how we can make the club bowl better, so please send me an message and make your feelings known. Let me know how we can better serve you! 3 Number 132 Utah Woodchips Newsletter December 2012, page 3 November 2012 Club Meeting Notes Joe Wagner Fluted Christmas Ornaments Joe again graciously shared his years of turning experience with us. He has only been turning since he was 8 or 9 (I won t tell his age but he has been turning for a very long time), and did a great demo on fluted Christmas Ornaments. Using a small Vicmarc Lathe, Joe will turn around 200 ornaments by Christmas. Keep in mind that most of us have a hard time turning two ornaments for the Christmas Party. Joe s finials were made out of holly, then colored with markers and brown ebony. The screw eyes come from parts.com and are 5/16 long. Walmart has the best hooks to bend down as they hold their shape. The finish is deft and Lincoln paste wax. He puts a ¾ spigot on all his finials and a ¾ hole in both ends of the body of the ornaments. This way he can put any finial on any ornament and it will fit. Joe starts out with a blank that has been glued on a waste block with medium CA glue. Tonight he used silver maple. He does blanks at a time and attaches them to face plates. He turns them to 2 3/8 or so with a roughing gouge and skew. Joe doesn t use a round ball. He thinks it looks funny and likes a ball that is a little bit squashed. He doesn t do a lot of measuring, he just works them until he likes the shape. He then sands them, marks the center and drills a 3/4 hole deep enough to go into the waste block. The inside is then hollowed out to take off some of the weight. Joe uses ¼ carbide cutters. He keeps the tools at about 40 degree angle. When using the hook tool, you need to keep the hook in front of the tool rest or it will keep jumping on you. Joe turns mostly by sound. After you do a few you can tell where the tool is by feel and sound. You don t want to make the walls too thin or you will get holes when you cut the flutes. The ball is then parted off. Joe then used an expanding chuck to hold the ornament from the inside, finalizes the shape, and sands it. He then mounts the ornament between centers using cone centers he made from wood to center the ornament. He used a metal indexing wheel held on with a shaft extender to cut 12 flutes on the ornament. Joe has always had troubles making fluted ornaments uniform until he came up with the method he showed us tonight. It is always nice to have someone else learn from most (I always find a few more mistakes to make) of the mistakes then show us how we can do it right the first time. It is a shock, but for Joe finding or making the parts/pieces and figuring out how to do it (Continued on page 4)
4 Number 132 Utah Woodchips Newsletter December 2012, page 4 (Continued from page 3) is half the fun. After several prototypes, Joe had his son make an aluminum plate the fits in the banjo like a tool rest and can be turned and rotated. This allows flutes to be made in any direction Joe wants. The plate has two stops that keep the flutes uniform and keeps the router from going too far and hitting the head or tail stocks. Joe uses a Bosh offset router with a faceplate made out of MDF and Masonite. He sets the router to center height and adjusts the stops to where he wants the flutes to end. The router bits have ball bearings on both sides of the cutter so it rides on the ornament and cuts a consistent depth. After each cut, Joe turns off the router, moves the ornament to the next index mark, and cuts the next flute. There are several different shaped bits with bearings so you have a variety of flute shapes to choose from. Once the flutes are cut, Joe sands the ornament. He puts sandpaper on a paint stick so it doesn t sand the leading edge more than the trailing edge. For a finish, Joe uses semi-gloss Deft cut with a little lacquer. To avoid the Deft from flipping all over when the lathe is turned on, he puts a cardboard tube on a handle around the ornament to catch the flying Deft. Deft dries quickly on a lathe. Joe buffed the ornament on a buffing wheel system using Carnuba wax. The finials are then glued on and there is one less ornament Joe needs to make this season. Joe reminded us to always sign our pieces, but if we are selling them don t include the date. That way if it doesn t sell fast it doesn t become an old piece that is harder to sell. Most of all, Joe told us to have fun when wood turning. It s not that serious. It is a lot more fun to learn on your own than to attend lots of classes or read lots of books.
