News And Views for February And March 2019 Hail Hail the gang is almost here, by rough count we had a high number of attendees at the February meeting, 48 to be exact. Well done, it gave for great participation, can we keep it up??? Comments were made about the luncheon and picnic, both voted to continue, Larry to secure the permit for the 1 st Sunday in October and soon we ll try to learn the date for the luncheon, you can almost plan on the last Sunday in January Mark your calendar now The response to wig trees has been very good to point it is recommended that we hold up until we deliver those on hand. The list of tools and machines that was compiled for us left a bit of a vacancy in description. I ll try to follow up. There are some usable machines and tools.
Be reminded that on Saturday February 23 rd that there will be a Coloring Sawdust Session in Ron Glahn s shop starting at 9:00AM. Directions for newcomers Exit Rte. 101on Grand Ave heading WEST to Elm, turn Left (South) to LEFT turn on Maple next street which is North Pine to 165. Ron s shop is at the end of a long driveway. This session will be delivered by Maryalice Birk, members are asked to bring a turned piece with a coat of some type of sealer. The paint will take a while to dry so it s suggested that you plan on leaving it at the shop to dry for a few days. The alternate is to plan to be very careful on handling it in your auto. Later in June, on the 6 th, CCW will host Hans Wiesflog from Germany for an all day demonstration. More info will be made available as the time approaches. For your info, Hans work can be seen on Youtube. A request was made by Geoff Halpin for help in securing wood. Gordon Rowland has responded by making up a list to be sent to all members. It should be noted that on this day we welcome back after a small hitch, Dennis Ivans, Geoff Halpin and Dave Bones, and Ray Johnson, looking forward to your work.
SHOW AND TELL Dan Ross started Saturday s session with a detailed description of how he worked this piece of Mesquite and the lesson he learned on how NOT to hold a piece of wood on the drill press, subsequently almost loosing a thumb nail but CA glue to the rescue. Dan went on to describe how he was able to salvage some of the Mesquite to turn a pen.
Dave Sheetz, a promising newbie showed the Good a, Segmented bowl of Mahogany and plywood and a smaller bowl of Ash
And Now the Bad, Dave is doing a great job in his initiation, a similar bowl that met its fate
Mike Malkin s description A Chestnut Bowl Maryalice Birk, A Elm Bowl
Tom Bullock has joined in full force the department of Segmented turners with a beautiful Urn with the threaded safety cap
Marion Vosberg presented a wig tree of Poplar and a bowl of Myrtle. My attempt to convince Laurel, Marion s wife to be more active with CCW fell on deaf ears
Doug Greene Traveled to Mt Shasta area to bring home a huge Blank of Pine which he turned into a bowl. The second entry, probably from the Shasta area was a equal sized bowl of Redwood.
Bob Gleason s presentation consisted from excerpts from the Bible which gave him the inspiration to turn a Tear Bottle which will be given to a member of his family. The turning was made from Juniper Cedar and adorned with jewels to signify tears
Dan Clardy has taken us for a brief moment to Christmas with his Fully operational NUTCRACKER, he proved it, it works. His second offering was a Bark Edged Bowl turned from Black Locust
Dave Burns showed us a bottle stopper Finished with colored Epoxy and a b0wl he turned in 2018 but showed us for the 1 st time
Dale Johnson presented a Black Walnut bowl, Question, What s he pointing at? Is it a funnel?
Ralph, who is so new, I didn t get his last name, but that will be corrected. Here he shows a screw driver turned handled. One thing I heard from Ralph is the he is looking to learn more about fluting. We should try for another Sawdust session.
Doug Brown proudly presented two turnings that his dad had done earlier. On left it s a Red Oak Burl that to me looks like a knuckle buster, on the Right is a Bowl of sugar Maple, Both well done.
Terry Gililand brought to us a lidded box turned from FIRP, found in red pickup Terry also asked for some help regarding bottle stopper coming apart when being taken out of bottle Several hints where submitted, like cross dowel, epoxy glues and who needs bottle stoppers, wine should be drunk.
Barry Lundgren show a double whammy, In his hands is a Buck Eye Burl and at the bottom left of the photo, What he describes as a SKATE BOARD, or SKATE BOWL
These items earned $ for your CCW, to those who supported it, A HUGE THANK YOU
