2 Demonstration SketchUp Michael Kingsley gave us a demonstration on SketchUp. SketchUp, formerly Google SketchUp, is a 3D modeling computer program for a wide range of drawing applications such as architectural, interior design, landscape architecture, civil and mechanical engineering, film and video game design. It is available as a freeware version, SketchUp Make, and a paid version with additional functionality, SketchUp Pro. * This paragraph copied from SketchUp.com Michael owns SketchUp Pro. He took us on a tour of the program and how it can be used for woodturning. In the picture to the left, Michael has designed a bowl profile. You can see what the idea is and determine if you like it without using up a great piece of wood. The picture on the right shows where he has designed a 12 segment ring for a bowl. The top right of the ring, (red arrow) he removed a piece to show an open segment on a ring. He told us that this function is only available on SketchUp Pro. 2

3 He told us that his reason for demonstrating SketchUp is so you can look at the program and see the different kind of things it does. Most of the things he showed us can be done on the free version of SketchUp. He said that when he was learning how to use the program, he watched a lot of U-tube demonstrations. Judging from the amount of questions from the audience, there are a lot of people interested in using SketchUp. Michael paved the path for us to go and download the free version and then visit U-tube for tutorials on how to use the different tools. Michael, I know that you achieved your goal of getting some people to have an interest in using SketchUp to design their turnings. Watching you go from tool to tool and make changes in the drawing show us that you are very proficient while using SketchUp. Thank you. 4 Show and Tell Tom Larson brought in this Red Cedar bowl. The bowl is finished with Shine Juice. It is 7 7/8 diameter and 4 high. Gary Moon brought in this Mesquite bowl. The bowl is finished with Mylands Friction Polish. 4

5 5 Susan McCoy demonstrated Making a Piggy Bank last month. She took it home and completed it and gave it a very happy face. Front view Back view Susan made this carved dragon fly vase, with lights inside. Bird house made from Madrone and Cocobolo. Susan does photography for the Weiser Fire Dept. A high voltage power line came down and landed on wet grass. The wet grass looks like glass.

6 Wes Pilley brought in this small box made out of Lignum Vitae. Notice the penny in the bottom of the box, in the right picture. Wes has ventured off into thread chasing. He said this is his first success. Notice the aligned grain in the left picture. The Box Elder burl vase to the right is 5 3/4 High and 3 3/4 Diameter. The interior is finished with brown paint. The pen below is dressed out with Spalted Tamarind. A friend of Wes s sent him a piece of Mango from Hawaii. Wes turned it into this beautiful box. 6

7 Dan Clark brought in this popcorn bowl made out of Mountain Elm. He finished it with beeswax and mineral oil. The bowl is 13 ¼ in diameter and 5 high. Henry Clark, Dan s son, is 12 years old. He brought in this black walnut lidded box. Henry told us that this is the first project he has done on the lathe. He found the glued up blank in his dad s scrape pile and asked his dad if he could make a box. Dan told him yes. Henry, with a little instruction from his dad made this box. He finished it with wipe on poly. Henry, make sure you keep that box and put it on a shelf. It will always be there to remind you of the first box you made with your dad. 7

8 Connis Wilson brought in his segmenting jig. He uses it to cut the segments for the rings in his bowls and platters. He cuts his segments in a diamond shape and glues them up so he is only turning side grain. Ron Moser made this hollow form out of Apricot and a lid from Andiroba. The finish is wipe on poly. 8

9 Bowl Exchange Cliff Heckathorn brought in this sycamore bowl for the bowl exchange. The bowl has an oil finish. And the winner is: Ron Moser is our lucky winner. Ron will have to bring something for our next meeting in October. We are having our picnic in September, so no regular meeting. 9

10 Break Time My wife, even with one bad arm, put together the club treat. She made S'mores. Half had marshmallow filling and the other half had peanut butter filling. All had a graham cracker top and bottom, with a piece of chocolate. 10

12 Club Business Brown Bag Challenge Brown Bag challenge was a success. Many bags were exchanged with the finished item/s to be returned to the owner of the bag at our September picnic. It will be fun to see the finished projects & explanations of how they were made. Monte & Susan Challenge Monte & Susan presented a challenge to the group. At the May meeting, Monte showed the group the Alaskan Ulu Knife Kit. He explained the woodworkers method of making the cutting board was to use a router & regular methods of making a knife. Susan stepped up to the challenge & said it would be much easier for the turners. Susan made a cutting board that can be used on both sides plus a slot to hold the knife, using the bandsaw box method. The board is Maple and the handle is Walnut. The knife handle was the most challenging. She cut the walnut in half, glued it back together, with a paper bag in the middle. Turned the handle, then separated the pieces. Used cut off small brad nails to hold the knife in place. She glued everything together with Apoxie Sculpt. Monte handed out the Alaskan Ulu Knife Kits for free to any member who wants to accept the challenge of making a cutting board & knife handle. Bring your cutting boards to the picnic. The cutting boards will be taken to Woodcraft for the Expo. The Ulu knife challenge will be judged at the Woodcraft Expo with prizes presented at the Expo. If you can t attend the picnic, be sure to deliver your Ulu knife challenge to Woodcraft prior to the September 16 th Expo. Should you take a knife kit and not make it, you have to explain why not to Monte s wife! Black and White Ball Southwest Idaho Woodturners Donations Tom Turco reported that the auction brought in a total of $2, Tom thanked everyone that donated turned items for the auction. 12

He designed the base to interlock together to support the top.

This design allows us to assemble and take them down quickly.

13 Aaron talked to us about the display s for AIW. He made the display pictured below. He said he was thinking about making them 6, 12 and 18 s high. He designed the base to interlock together to support the top. The top has cleats on the bottom that interlock with the legs. This design allows us to assemble and take them down quickly. Also, by being flat when disassembled, they are easy to store for next year. If anyone has different idea s, contact Aaron. The picnic is going to be Sept. 9, at 12:00. We will meet at Veterans park. Bring your completed brown bag projects. If you can t be at the picnic, bring the brown bag project to the Oct. Meeting. Last names begin with: A-P bring Dessert Q-Z bring side dish s Turning for the troops will meet at Woodcraft at 9:00 AM. Aaron would like 12 people each day to help with cutting, drilling and gluing the pen blanks. The turning days will be 8-26 and A date in October will be added if needed. If you want to do some pens in your shop, talk to Aaron or Steve to get pen blanks and brass tubes. The new directories are in. Susan told us that Tom Turco did all of the editing and printing for the club. Tom donated all costs to the club. Everyone, lets give Tom a special thank you for the directories. 13

15 Monte s Visit After missing Monte for

Monte brought in two new tools from Easy

15 15 Monte s Visit After missing Monte for a couple of meetings, he returned. Monte told us he and his family went river rafting. He said that one of his son s wants to train to be a professional river guide. Monte brought in two new tools from Easy Wood Tools. One is a point tool with a very small pointed tip, and the other one is a very small finisher with a round cutter. If you are looking for mini turning tools, be sure and check them out at Woodcraft. Monte asked that we complete our Ulu cutting boards and bring them to the picnic. He would like to have them to display at Woodcrafts Expo the following weekend. Prizes will be presented at the Expo.
