Larry has been traveling through Florida the last few months and is spending his last weeks here in Punta Gorda before returning to his home in Colorado. Larry came to our May meeting and demonstrated Inlays and Outlays using Turquoise and epoxy. Larry s Turquoise that he uses is from Mixing The Turquoise & Epoxy

2 Calendar The calendar listings are an attempt to keep you up to date on upcoming PRW events, as well as other events of particular interest to woodturners. After just having Larry Fox demonstrate the inlaying and outlaying of Turquoise, this will be the June challenge. I hope everyone is working on something in that category. Don t feel you have to use Turquoise. Brass filings, Inlace, colored epoxies, and even coffee grounds make excellent materials for the inlay/outlay process that Larry demonstrated. We will look forward in having you share with the members what you came up with. And remember, you just might win the Crafts Supply Gift Certificate. ). 2 June Meeting Challenge Wood Alerts Wood alerts have been quite frequent over the last few months. Lots of good heads up alerts went out to the PRW members. Hope many of you cashed in on the mother loads of wood that have become available. If you have a wood alert, please make sure you give the exact location and any particulars such as information about the property owner, kind of wood, sizes, trunk or branch stock etc. These alerts are what makes turning fun. There is a wood alert on Florida Mahogany that is in the planning stage at the moment. The property owner is having the tree estimated for removal and will be getting back with the club when the estimate is complete. Club Library The library is pleased to announce that we have two new DVD additions. The club has purchased the two latest Larry Fox DVD s : Creating Outlays from Inlays, and Creating Creative Inlays. Both go over the processes that Larry touched on at our May meeting demonstration. See Fran the librarian to check a copy out. Also remember to check the clubs web site if you need a copy of Larry s Inlay handout. The library has also acquired another reference book called Woods of the World This is a very informative book on identifying wood or trees you come across and need to know the identification of. This book will be for reference only and will not be checked out at this time. It will be for use during the meetings. Bring in a piece of bark, a leaf sample, a piece of the wood etc. to assist using the book to identify. Once again, see Fran for assistance. Display Case If your by the Punta Gorda Tennis and Fitness Center, stop in the lobby to view the PRW traveling display case. Some very nice pieces are on exhibit. Thanks goes out to JR & Leo for bringing in the treats for the May meeting. Please sign up with Fran for a feature meeting night to share the goodies of your choice. 2

6 New Lathe The PRW club is now the proud owner of an extremely nice Powermatic 3520A lathe. A very big Thank You goes out to fellow member Paul Sandler for such a nice machine.

6 6 New Lathe The PRW club is now the proud owner of an extremely nice Powermatic 3520A lathe. A very big Thank You goes out to fellow member Paul Sandler for such a nice machine. The club purchased Paul s lathe for $1,550. Comes with a Super Nova 2 chuck, Oneway live center, Spur drive and tool rest. This lathe is in pristine condition and should serve the club well. We hope to see many members signing up to do a monthly meeting demonstration soon. Without a doubt, this machine will be a treat for us to use. 6

8 8 From the Prez WORDS FROM THE PREZ We ve now met our major goal of acquiring a new lathe for the club. Within the next few days we will pick-up our new (used) Powermatic 3520 and transport it to our club room in the Cultural Center. We acquired a set of the newly marketed caster system specifically designed to give mobility to the Powermatic when needed and stability when in use. At the June meeting you will be able to view this new set up and watch as Chuck Biggs performs the first demo. It s especially pleasing that we were able to make this acquisition without breaking the bank and will have the resources to outfit the club with a full range of jaws for the chuck which came with the lathe. We will also be able to afford, and have the proper equipment, to do more professional demonstrations come fall. Speaking of demonstrations we want to again thank Larry Fox for his excellent demonstration on the use of crushed turquoise as a way to enhance our work. We hope you will all give the process a try by using other material, or dyes, if you don t have access to turquoise. I made my first bowl with a turquoise rim and was very pleased with the outcome that is until I dropped the bowl (with the Vicmarc chuck attached) on the shop floor!! Now I get opportunity of making another one!! Ouch!! Our venture into teaching woodturning to newly interested folks seems to have hit the spot. Vic Goetz has had about 5 students, and we have gained at least three new members, from this experiment. As Vic has headed north for the summer we will start these classes again in the fall when he returns. We will look forward to seeing many more folks learn and enjoy our craft and our club. As the summer doldrums have begun with about half of our members packing up and heading to the cooler and dryer climate of the north the club s activity will take on a slower pace. We will, however, be planning a series of events for the fall and winter and be getting ready for the AAW symposium in Tampa next June, as well as some schools and other symposium that will be available both over the summer and into the fall. Lastly, I would ask that all our members give some thought to the question about whether it s in our best interest to continue to mandate membership in AAW as a condition of being a member of Peace River Wood Turners. We certainly learned that being a Star Chapter doesn t get us any benefits in the AAW grant process and to many the Journal is of questionable value. The AAW has changed its dues structure to annual on an anniversary date 8

9 9 instead of at the end of the calendar year due date we ve been accustom to and the membership fee has been raised to $ For our club that equates to a total cost to our members of about $2,200. Additionally, we know that we have turners in our community who will not join PRWT because they don t want to have to join AAW. So What s in it for us? That will be the question we will grapple with over the next couple of months. Please give it some thought and let us know your views. In the meantime, keep on turning and learning and don t drop your newest masterpiece on the concrete floor that makes for a really, really bad day! Jim 9
