Central Coast Woodturners of California News and info for April February came to a close with the fine demonstration by Scott Hampton shown here being introduced by his host Dennis Ivans. Scott Went on to do several different pieces with some different twists
Scott started off with some basic small lidded bowl turning and then enhancing with a process of coloring which gives the bowl a different effect, take note of the same bowl showing the before and after displayed on the TV screen
Scott s 2 nd project to fill the time reaching for the lunch break was a spinning top. He explained how important it is to maintain a proper shape to assure balance. Please note that the base has been embellished and the top is of a different wood. The proof came when he started the spinning and it did not move or wander.
After lunch break, he stunned a few of the audience by mounting what described as a perfect cube. He stressed the point of the exact squareness of the work piece. Next was to mount it into the headstock spindle minus a spur and to remove the center of the tailstock live center. The two photos shows it taking shape
What started off as a perfect cube is now a 3 sided bowl, he then went on to turn a top with a slender finial.
Scott s final project for the day was a platter of Mahogany. After establishing a desirable shape he showed several tooling effects that can be created. Far right, the TV Scree gives us a close up view.
Scott again added a different touch by using a power carver (Very Carefully) and what was new to many was a Dremel tool round burr cutter for a novel design. The members of CCW wish to thank Scott for a great day of turning and to Dennis Ivans for his work hosting the demonstration.
AND NOWlets get on to our meeting and upcoming events AAW has announced that starting Saturday April 1st, no fooling, they wish to enroll chapter members who have NEVER been a member of AAW with a one time offer of 50% deduction of a years dues, that sounds like $ If you decide to join, you ll receive 6 bi-monthly journals loaded with tons of ideas, answers to some projects, and bulletins via . You will also be eligible to attend the annual symposium and register as a AAW member. CCW has booked again in the Dennis Ivans studio a demonstration by His work can be seen over the internet, If you think that a cube ending up as a 3 sided vessel is kooky, you ll leave this demo scratching your head The date for this event is March 28 th at 70 Fresno St Paso Robles. Start time is 9:00AM and don t forget a chair and make preparations for lunch. As mentioned at the March meeting we will have a Sawdust session for those who wish to learn about threading and threading devices, We ll also touch base on vacuum turning. And we ll have a chance to seek out other topics. Time of start 9:00AM George s shop 1240 West Tefft ST in Nipomo,
AND NOW CONTINUED We are proud to add to our chapter 2 new members, We wish to welcome Terry Gilliland and Frank Aguilar. Terry does travel between houses, when here is from Morro Bay, back to the valley when he s not here and Frank is from Orcutt, Recently retired from Vandenberg AFB Gentlemen we hope you bring us some new and good ideas. We had a visitor, Dale Johnston of Lompoc who I feel will join our ranks officially soon as he has ordered some peppermill kits We know that it s a few months away but be prepared to attend our annual picnic on Sunday October 1st at the Nipomo, County Park More info as the time nears. The challenge for March was a MALLET, there were several shown but let me just add, next month the challenge is a SCOOP. Now the reason for a monthly challenge is to have all try to meet the challenge that month, not something made years ago. A quick note, if you were the recipient of the Black Acacia, and you wish to turn a piece that can be donated to the people who made it available.
Challenge project As mentioned the challenge was a mallet, mallets can be of different design and material. To start off, Left Mike Rude made his mallet of Lemon wood, the handle went unidentified. Center Dennis Ivans introduced his one time use of a mallet turned from Aluminite, a tree that grows in laboratories. On the right we have Jesse Olson who turned his entry of Maple with a water based finish.
Jerry Werner(left) used a laminated maple and finished it with salad bowl sealer, Art Everett (center) added some color by laminating Maple and a wood not identified and used sanding sealer. Bob Gleason(Left) took the time and pleasure to laminate Oak into a 4x4 chunk. By our showing, looks like the Carvers mallet drew the most attention
George Paes (right) went for 2, a judge type mallet and a carvers style. Gordon Rowland(center) turned his offering in a different manor by going off center and ending up with a 3 sided tool. Blaine Harris (Left) showed a carvers mallet of Oak.
Terry Gilliland, Our newest member told us how he obtained the wood from an old piano, he went on to say he was able to salvage a lot of the piano for future projects, he then led us into SHOW AND TELL. His offering is a hollow form Manzanita. Again Welcome
Here s another twist, earlier you read about Aluminite now how about magnets? Jesse )Olson told us of the hi tech calculations he went through to be able to match is upper and lower space like saucers and to get them to levitate. I hope we don t lose him to some outer space alien. Good job of thinking and planning.
Mike Rude showed up in time to help me describe a tool that Scott Hampton was using in the embellishment of the platter. Mike was able to secure parts and assembled this effective tool. Look closely and you can see the Dremel tool or cutter that does all the work. A closer look on the right
Continuing with Show & Tell George Paes (Left) brought to the meeting his latest Urn turned from Bubinga and accented with Red Fish Paper a first for him in this medium, hope it sells. Dan Ross (center ) presented a footed bowl of Walnut. Rick Hasseman (Left) presented another version of his favorite beaded bowl of Canary wood
Art Everett showed what looks like a half set of chess pieces turned from Maple that will go to a grandchild someday soon. My suggestion is that he strike a deal with Ernie Miller and get some African Black Wood for the other half
Closing Remarks CCW is still interested in procuring a second or third video camera so as to be able to get different views.if you know of a used camera that at least can provide a picture, if you travel to used equipment sellers, let us know DON T FORGET A SCOOP FOR APRIL CHALLENGE, made some time this month Next Meeting- Saturday April 8 th, Odd fellows hall, SAN LUIS OBISPO,CA 9:00 ANM Sawdust Session Saturday March 25 th, George s shop 1240 west Tefft St, Nipomo, CA 9:00AM If you need help or information regarding CCW Your officers are George Paes Pres gngpaes@sbcglobal.net Gordon Rowland V.
