1 quoia e S wo odt ur ne r s Volume Seventeen Issue Three Crowne Hollow-Forms Make For A Fun & Interesting Project Tye Shows How to Make a project fit for a king By Scott Hampton President Scott Hampton called meeting to order at 10:05am at the Fowler Library. There were 43 members and guests in attendance. We had guests Chris Showalter, his son Chris and a friend, Matt. New member Jim Hibbard was also in attendance. Tye started the demo by showing the shape of the project. He also showed how to mount the project to the lathe, which required the piece to be turned at a 45-degree angle to the bed of the lathe. Tye said This project can be a little unpredictable to start, and becomes easier as the piece becomes more balanced. He also mentioned that this is the part of the project that s not for the faint of heart. Tye did the main balance turning with a bowl gouge. He then turned to a skew chisel to make a tenon so he can mount it into a scroll chuck. After turning the piece around and mounting it in a scroll chuck, Tye finished the outside, creating a very nicely shaped vessel design. Before turning on the lathe, Tye did what every turner should do before hitting the on button, making sure that everything is secure including the tailstock and tool rest. This is a very important step due for this type of project because of the angle of the piece makes it very unbalanced to start. Tye switched gears when he picked-up a skew chisel and used it to shear-scrape the inside part of the vessel s rim. Tye explained This causes a lot of vibration because you are in-part cutting air, but it is a necessary step. Tye then moved back to using the bowl gouge to finish turning the dish portion of the vessel and leaving the natural rim and a crowne in the middle. It is through this crowne that you hollow out the inside of the vessel. Both the rim and the crowne are left with a natural edge. Scott announced that Treasurer Craig Miller was taking dues and reservations for the upcoming woodturning class with Doug Fisher at Ideal Saw on May 8. He noted to all that today is the final day for dues. Scott then went over in detail about the AAW insurance program. The board had agreed to purchase the $90.00 policy. After further review he decided to explain to the club members that if we did not accept the $ policy the club would be limited to only AAW members doing demos. We would not be able to have covered Sawdust sessions and only AAW members could demonstrate. A vote was taken and all agreed we needed the more expensive policy. Scott next explained to the membership details of the upcoming Antique Farm Equipment Show. In prior years the club demonstrated at the event. Now the show rounds built a permanent building. There is a charge of $75.00 per ten by ten booth and we would need two. There were only six tickets provided per booth. Any Inside this Issue... Craig Miller

2 Page 2 The Sequoia Woodturners May/June 2013 Minutes of the March 2013 meeting Dear Members, I just returned from a week-long trip to Las Vegas to visit family and friends. Yes, people do live in Las Vegas. I visited with one friend most of you know, Jimmy Clewes, and his wife Mary. He showed me his classroom where he teaches woodturning and also some new pieces he is working on for his club demonstrations. He said he should be ready to go come this Fall and he hopes to come back to Fresno. He also showed me his other little hobby, gold mining, and the gold nuggets he has gotten from his gold claim in the hills south of Las Vegas. Now on to club business. Unfortunatley we have lost eighteen members this year as they have not paid their dues. This of course causes some financial burdens on our club, so there are some certain things we will have to be putting on hold until we know how we stand in the treasury department. I will talk about this in more detail at the upcoming meeting. The good news is four new members have joined in the last few months. We had a great class given by Doug Fisher earlier this month and he showed a lot of things that are out of the box as far as woodturning goes. Everyone in attendance has a great time, and a great lunch (Thanks Tye). Craig Miller will be giving a talk on how to create a Wave Bowl at our upcoming meeting. This should be a very interesting discussion. Don t forget to bring your raffle money and any DVD s you borrowed from the library. I hope to see all of you at the meeting. Parking provided at no charge outside. To bring a vehicle in to unload costs $10.00 per vehicle and to sell at the event there is a Tulare County charge of $15.00 permit cost. A show of hands was asked of people that would be interested which also meant they would be willing to work a shift in the booth. The show is open Friday and Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 8am to 3pm. We need at least 3 people in the booth at all times. Seven members raised their hands. It was decided that we could not participate this year but would bring it up a lot further in advance next year. Scott then brought up his plans and ideas to grow the club. He will prepare a club evaluation form that will be ed to all members. It will be a blind response to be used to improve the club. He also asked to set up a new committee that would be called the special events committee. Bill Robinson, Bruce Ahernhimer, Perry Coy and Matt Dellavalle all volunteered. Jack Ritchie made a report on his attendance at The Desert Round up in Mesa, Arizona that was held in early February. He stated that is was almost on par with the Utah Symposium. It had a wonderful venue at the Mesa Convention Center. There were good demonstrators and plenty of rotations. He enjoyed himself and thought he would go next time which is in two years. Howard Atamian displayed the first cane turning for the 2013 Veterans Cane Project, He was looking for four more volunteers to turn four canes each. He reminded all that you have to have a steady rest for your lathe to produce a cane. Bob Sansom announced that he had a trailer in the parking lot with free turning Newsletter Editor Scott D. Location and time of meeting will be announced in the newsletter and on the website. Club Website: blanks. He is moving and needs to diminish his supply. Howard Atamian listed a supply of Manzanitta Burl for sale. Tye Putnam showed a baseball jersey and some baseball caps with our club logo that can be purchased. Pull over shirts are also available. Contact Tye if you are interested. He explained about the styles and logos. They are not cheap as they are of top quality. A baseball style with logo, the price ranges from $49.00 to $69.50 depending on what you want on the shirt. The pullover style starts at $ There is a fee to digitize our logo of about $ Lots of input came from the audience. Tye did a lot of work to come up with nice hats and shirts. Contact him for more info. Eighteen people raised their hands as interested in buying the shirts and hats. Tye next displayed a Sorby sovereign tool handle that broke while he was turning. He contacted the supplier and they replaced it and asked he return it for evaluation. Tye Putnam put on an excellent demo on the lathe. His demo will be covered in another article. Next Terry Gilliland asked all the sixteen people in attendance that completed the club challenge of a twice turned object to come up front and show their work. Two meetings ago he handed out blanks. People were to half turn them, bring them back last meeting. Then another member would swap and complete. This meeting 16 were returned completed. We all voted on them. Gordon Miller was the winner and the first turner of that piece was Ken Kenoyer. Both won a bowl gouge and handle blank. The person that finished the project got to keep it. The participants were: Mickey Loy, Jerry Sandstorm, Craig Miller, Bob Cravy, Bill Darlington, Dayle Rogers,Chuck Smith, Mike Cunningham, Howard Atamian, Chris Grothe, Perry Coy, Larry McCartney, Jack Schwartz, Tye Putnam, Gordon Miller and Jack Ritchie. Show and Tell had 14 participants. Terry next held the raffle and as usual some great prizes were won by some lucky members. The meeting was closed at approximately 1:45pm.

4 Page 4 The Sequoia Woodturners May/June 2013 March Demonstration - Crowned Hollow-Forms Tye hollowed the middle of the crowne as much as possible with a bowl gouge before moving to a small curved hollowing tool with a carbide tip. After some adjustments, Tye was able to hit what he calls the illusive cutting sweet spot. It is also very noisy, but the noise can help in determining if you are cutting correctly. After hollowing out the inside, Tye again reversed chucked the piece, using a specially made jam-chuck and the tailstock. (the jam-chuck is sold through Craft Supplies and it is called a Kelton Woodchucker Mandrel, Part# ). Tye turned down the speed of the lathe because turning with this particular jam-chuck can be a delicate procedure. In the last step before sanding and finishing, Tye used a hook tool to undercut the crowne of the vessel. He then turned a nice foot on the bottom. You need to be careful with this tool, and it can sometimes cause the tip to slip and stall while turning. All you need to do now is sand and finish the piece Tye said. He showed his techniques of turning with a vacuum chuck, detailed carving, burning and coloring the wood. Please have a look at the photos and you can get an idea of how detailed Doug s process is. There are several of you who put on your membership application that you would like to give a demonstration. Well, now is that time to step up and give back to your club. We are looking for club members to give demonstrations during our regular club meetings. It isn t difficult and it is a lot of fun.
