CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS Words From Your President... Hello Turners! The second meeting of the year is almost here (October 13th). We will have Mike Jackofsky as our guest Turner, showing us how to make small hollow forms. This time we ll have a Show & Tell (show but no tell--sorry Ron and Freddie!). We ll also have our 50/50 raffle, a raffle for a solid oak church pew and the President's Challenge, something you made for Halloween made from the block of walnut you picked up at the September meeting. Don t forget to bring one of your screw-ups that you can trade with another member for next month s challenge. Mike Jackofsky will also teach a two-day hands-on class on hollow forms October 12 and 13 at Woodcraft at ½ our usual cost. The last I heard, there was only one spot left, so you may want to call Mike Trucco before you put your check in the mail. See the workshop ad for his contact information. The club had a great open shop at The Beall Tool Company. If you weren t there, you missed a great time, good food and a few words of wisdom from J.R. himself. We also had a great time at the Paul Bunyan show, demonstrating, doing a little PR for the club and g seeing all the logging and forestry equipment in action. On Saturday, October 24, from 10:00-12:00, we ll have another mentoring session at Woodcraft. Our own Bruce Kerns will show us how to make Christmas ornaments out of sea urchin shells. Come for all the fun and learn from the best! If you have ideas for other mentoring topics, please or see Steve Wagner. continued on page2 In this issue... 2 Words From Your President: (continued from page 1).. The club is getting a Facebook page. Devon Palmer has been diligently working to set it up; he ll have a preview at the November meeting. We hope that by using Facebook we can reach the younger crowd and draw them to our club. The younger turners are important for the club s longevity (besides, we need some young blood to do some of the heavy lifting). The club is in need of a newsletter editor, since Naeem can only fill in temporarily. Here is an opportunity for you to get involved with your club and to help take it to the next level. Please contact one of your officers if you have any interest in becoming the next newsletter editor. If being a newsletter editor is not your thing, we also need of a chair for the Chapter Collaborative Challenge (CCC) entry we would like to submit for the 2016 AAW symposium. Please contact one of your officers if you would like to be involved in this interesting and creative project. As a prize for winning the Artistic Award for our 2015 CCC entry, the club has been given one free registration for the 2016 AAW Symposium in Atlanta. We will auction this registration to the highest bidder at the January meeting; more information to come. I hope to see you at our October 13th meeting. Please consider taking an active role in your club, by promoting the art of wood turning and volunteering for one of the open positions. Happy and safe turning! Your President - Paul N. Courtright Mentoring News By Steve Wagner The September mentoring session was a big hit, with our own President, Paul Courtright at the lathe. The session was held on Saturday, October 26, at Wood Werks. We had about 40 excellent turners and woodworkers in attendance. Paul, you really can pack them in! Paul has been expanding his lathe skills by learning to make hollow forms. Paul hollows the inside a vessel by going through the small hole in the top using his turning tools. Paul demonstrated a hollowing tool designed by Lyle Jamieson, just one of many hollowing tools on the market. Throughout the session, Paul invited everyone to come up to the lathe and give it a try. If you weren t there, you really missed out. Bob Dadik brought in a vessel that was full of holes! It was a breeze to hollow out the inside without blowing it up. (This was an open segmented vessel that Bob had just constructed.) Next month s mentoring session will be just as exciting with Bruce Kerns making Christmas ornaments from sea urchin shells. Bruce says that once he shows us how to make them, the rest of the time will be used by us, making them ourselves! That s right -- next month will have several lathes set up so everyone can get some actual hands-on experience. We will meet at Woodcraft on October 24th starting at 10:00am. We normally finish by noon; however, the folks at Wood Craft said if you want to stick around and make ornaments the rest of the day, go for it! I will see you on the 24th. Any question or ideas let me know srwagner72@yahoo.com page 2

Central Ohio Woodturners Social Media Campaign by Devon Palmer Check out and like the new COW Facebook page at This page will supplement our Internet presence and assist with outreach/promotion of the club via social media. We'll post event invitations, pictures of current events, members work, programs, and information about the club. Given Facebook s powerful marketing tools, we'll be able to proactively reach out to prospective members who have an interest in woodturning rather than relying on them to search for us. If you have suggestion for posts, articles, or relevant woodturning information, please pass them along to the newsletter editor and/or myself at devonpalmer@gmail.com Call for local and traveling Demonstrators Do you have a project or skill that you'd like to like to share with the Central Ohio Woodturners or other club in Ohio? I'm assembling a list of people, projects and skills to share with COW and other woodturning clubs in the area. Drop me a line at devonpalmer@gmail.com, or talk to me at a club meeting, letting me know your interest, skills and willingness to travel or demonstrate for the club. 6 Introduction to Woodturning Tool Sharpening By Devon Palmer This is the start of an 8-article mini-series on Sharpening Woodturning Tools. The objective of this series is to improve tool selection and help beginning woodturners understand the concepts around sharpening and the Why of tool presentations, metals, and sharpening angles. Like many things in woodworking, there are multiple schools of thought when it comes to tools, angles and materials. This series only describes the way that I approach sharpening, and is not intended as a reference standard. My hope is that you will find some ideas within these articles that work for YOU as you turn. In this first article, we'll talk about woodcutting theory, which will help you understand tool selection. Other articles topics will follow: Tool profiling, metallurgy and grinder setup/abrasives, and honing - November Scrapers, hollowing tool bits - December Bowl Gouges - January Skews - February Spindle gouges - March Spindle Roughing gouge, continental gouge, and Parting tool April Specialty Tools Shear scraper, Forstner Bits, Bedan, Button Cutters (Munro) May If you have specific questions about sharpening topics, please me at devonpalmer@gmail.com and I'll answer those questions in future articles. Sharpening defined Sharpness is a combination of two things: 1.) The fineness of the edge where the bevel meets the reference edge 2.) The profile, shape and sharpening angle of the blade as it relates to that blades use (i.e., you would not use a razor to plane wood, nor a scraper to cut hair). Regarding the fineness of the edge, in all cases we'd like to have the radius of our cutting edge to be infinitely small. In the upper left the figure below, you'll see a human hair against a Wilkinson razor blade. We're dealing with imperceivably small dimensions. As we zoom in 10 times on the blade edge in the lower two graphics, we see a fine edge with a.5 micron diameter. Since we woodturners use tools against a powered piece of wood, these high levels of edge keenness are a bit overkill. The precision and slow sharpening speed of the fine abrasive required to polish this edge would take a lot of time as well. Also, notice the residual wire burr left as product of the sharpening. As we bring the bevel to the reference surface, we rely on the burr to tell us that we have sharpened the bevel completely and brought the two edges together. I feel for a burr after sharpening to ensure I have abraded the bevel all the way to the reference edge. The only time I will remove the burr is when cutting hard, tight-grain woods, as it makes the tool less grabby. The burr is actually helpful for open-grain woods such as ash and oak. Either way, the burr is gone within several seconds, given the forces on the tool. Regarding the blade profile, each one has its strength and weakness in a woodturning application. Know that when you purchase woodturning (and most woodworking) tools, they are neither sharp nor profiled for use. They must be set up and sharpened. (See figure below) page 6
Hollow grind: This is the most common as most woodturners use a bench grinder. We'll cover bench grinder setup, abrasives and sharpening next month in detail. Strengths: Hollow grinds tend to be self-feeding, requiring less effort to make the cut. They also help us run the bevel, giving a wider area for us to sense where to balance the tool such that the bevel slides behind the cut, holding down the fibers and supporting the edge This grind also makes for a stable cut as it tends to easily follow the line cut by the edge balanced by the heel of the bevel Weaknesses: Since the tool is self-feeding, it can be more aggressive at sharper angles (<30 degrees). Also, since there is less metal around the cutting edge, the edge is weaker. When using a 6 grinding wheel, the hollow makes a 7-degree sharper tool so, what you think is 25 degrees may be 17 degrees (very aggressive). An 8 wheel hollow makes the cutting edge 3.5 x sharper than the angle from the edge to the heel of the bevel. Convex Grind: This grind has limited application in woodturning. Since the heel of the bevel does not ride the surface, it's difficult to balance the tool and as a result, this grind feels rather wild. Strengths: Given the added material around the cutting edge, it tends to stay sharp longer. When used on a skew, it makes it difficult to catch, as the tool is constantly wanting to track OUT of the wood. For traditional ground bowl gouges, a convex grind will easily slide around the bottom of a bowl, leaving a smooth finish (more on this in bowl gouge sharpening) Weaknesses: This profile is difficult to sharpen without rounding the edge over. It will also stall out quickly in some skew cuts. The biggest disadvantage is the lack of a bevel, which we woodturners use to balance the tool. Flat Grind: As you would expect, the flat bevel blends qualities of the hollow (concave) grind and convex grind. It's neither self-feeding, nor does it have problems following the line of the bevel. This tool profile is commonly achieved with a belt grinder. Strengths: Tools with this profile will feel less aggressive and remain slightly stronger due to more material around the cutting edge. Weaknesses: This profile requires exact precision along the entire bevel to maintain its profile. Without it, multiple facets develop and it's difficult to maintain a consistent edge. It also requires special tooling and jigs that slow the sharpening process. page 7
How Wood is Cut by Devon Palmer It seems simple, right? The sharp edges wedge through the fibers and remove the waste. If we break this process down into its two steps, we can find subtle ways to change our tool presentation to get better cuts and performance, allowing us to push our tools/lathe farther and save us time in sanding and finishing. Step 1: The small radius of the cutting edge crushes the wood fibers/cells along axis F1 (see figure below). Step 2: The advancing wood fibers start to climb the cutting edge as it acts as a wedge. This starts to place tension on the crushed wood fibers along F2, pulling them apart. The fibers/chips fail, and are separated. The smoother the surface under the chip, the more easily it will slide and wedge (this is why good woodturning tools have polished shiny flutes). We can manipulate both the sharpness of the edge (step 1) and the angle of the wedge/profile (step 2) to suit the hardness of the wood, the way we can access the cut, grain direction and type open vs. closed, and the material we are using in the tool. Consider the following scenarios: Softer, closed-grain woods: poplar, silver maple, catalpa. These woods benefit from smaller/sharper sharpening angles so that the crushing action is focused on a small radius and the chips are easily wedged apart. Larger, duller sharpening angles tend to plow through the wood, causing individual fibers to wrap around the cutting edge, making the cutting edge even larger, compounding the plowing effect. You will see this happen as tearout as the fibers are pulled from the surface rather than crushed and wedged Harder, open-grain woods: Ash, oak, purple heart. These woods have more strength along the grain and less strength between the fibers (side grain). As a result, we want larger sharpening angles that focus on crushing the fiber (step 1) as opposed to wedging (step 2). The high angles help to break/crush the fibers, and the steeper edge causes the chip to fail quicker with higher pressure. A sharper angle would allow the fibers to climb the cutting edge, creating chip-out. Exotic, hard, closed-grain woods: Cocobolo, Boxwood, ironwood. Given the hardness of these woods, larger sharpening angles are required to both maintain a usable edge for any length of time and to assist in tool control as sharper angles tend to feel grabby. Given the hardness and less fibrous nature of the wood, the chip will more easily fail when crushed, the additional material up at page 8
the cutting edge will retain it's shape longer, and the higher pressure along the wedge will assist in making the chip fail. We can also control the wedging force by varying the depth of our cut. Heavier cuts put more pressure on the chip, increasing the prying action creating tearout. Lighter cuts cause the chip to fail with less force and allow the leading edge to crush the fiber for a cleaner cut. (The lighter cut also gives us more control.) Stay tuned for next month as we dive into different sharpening tools and abrasives: Bench grinders, belt sharpeners, honing, grinding wheels and tool steels. Send along your questions regarding this article to devonpalmer@gmail.com and I'll do my best to answer them in the next newsletter. 16 PAUL BUNYAN SHOW 2015 The Paul Bunyan show has come and gone. It was held on October 2, 3, and 4. The weather wasn t all that great and the crowds were smaller this year, but overall the attendance was good. Our club made a good impression with the following members showcasing their talents: William Gockenbach, Floyd Anstaett, Max Kackstetter, Bruce Kerns, Paul Courtright, Leslie Neilsen, Steve Wagner and myself. There was also a guest appearance by Jim & Ruth Baumgardner who stopped by the booth to say hi. They just returned from Ireland! Congrats Jim & Ruth. Although it was a bit muddy outside, there was still plenty of action going on. I did feel sorry for the girls in the log rolling contest. I m sure that water wasn t heated. There were also some bargains to be had. I finally got to go outside on Sunday and managed to pick up a couple of chains for my saw and a cant hook for a good price. I strongly encourage anyone who has never been to the show to check it out next year. Yours truly, Mike Trucco page 16
