Jimmy s British style, wit, and magnetic personality make him an entertaining and informative demonstrator. Don t miss this one! Jimmy has over 22 years of experience in woodturning and woodworking. The demand for his services as a freelance demonstrator and teacher has taken him all over the world including his homeland of the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Norway, Finland, New Zealand and the United States. When asked what drives him, he shares, My energy comes from those around me. When I can stir the creativity of one s mind, that for me is very satisfying. As with any art form, expression is only limited as one s mind and I want to raise the bar and create an awareness of the art form that has been virtually unknown to most people. President s Message Dates have been set for the Douglasville Cultural Arts Council exhibit of GAW member s work. The exhibit opens on September 1st with a reception from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Cultural Arts Center located at 8652 Campbellton St, Douglasville, GA. Click here for a map. Wine and hors d oeuvres will be served and dress is casual. All members are encouraged to attend and to bring family and friends. In addition, there may even be a lathe available for those that wish to turn. At the April meeting, we passed around a sign-up sheet to get an idea of the number of pieces that members plan to exhibit. The total came to about 35 pieces. We can use at least twice that many. We ll pass around another sheet at the May meeting, but if you can t attend a meeting and wish to exhibit, please contact me at president@gawoodturner.org with the approximate number of pieces you would like to exhibit. All members, regardless of skill level are encouraged to exhibit. Please bring any work you have that you want to donate for the AAW 25 for 25" event or for the AAW empty bowls project. The club will pack and pay for the shipping. All you have to do is bring your items to the meeting. The date and location of the fall beginner s class is near finalization. More specifics should be available at the May meeting. We ll get the information out in an as soon as it s ready. For those who plan to hand deliver their entries for the Georgia National Fair, this year s dates are September 9th and 10th. Please remember that fair management has requested that you include a photo of your pieces. If you are unable to do so, we will have the capability to create one when the pieces are registered. Details will be sent out as we get closer to the date. A club picnic has been scheduled for August 6th at Danny and Jane McCravy s. Food will be catered. Steve Pritchard Wes Jones Magazine Article Published Wes recently had an article published in Woodturning Design magazine. The title is Interconnections Hollowform with Multiple Interconnected Cavities. Here is the finished product of the article. It is available on the GAW website here to download and read. Wood From Recent Tornado From Carol Henson Please call ahead to see if the wood is still available. My Dad's house and surrounding woods were severely impacted in the recent tornado. He lives in Cave Spring, GA. If anyone is interested in sycamore, elm, oak, walnut, red oak, white oak, poplar, dogwood, basswood, pretty much most native GA hardwoods, please call Charles Self He is willing to give the wood to anyone who wants to come and get it. Total cost only $90 and an afternoon of assembly. If anyone wants to contact me I can give advice on assembly. 3 Page 3 GAW Newsletter May 2011 Tips & Hints Tool Tip George Daughtry During my March 27th, 2011 class at John C Campbell, instructor Charles Watson mentioned using a cheap die grinder as a non-powered sanding tool. I went to Harbor Freight and bought one...it works quite well and is much cheaper than the alternatives (and if you hook it up to air, you can grind too). Demonstrations, Events Jimmy Clews Hands On Workshops Three hands on workshops will be held on Friday 5/20, Saturday 5/21, and Sunday 5/22. The location will be Peachtree Woodworking. Friday May 20th Projects: Lidded Box with Ebony Insert, Natural Edge Bowl, and Closed Bowl with Turquoise inlay. Saturday May 21st Projects; Natural Edge Vase, Clam Shell Box and Platter with colored rim, Sunday May 22nd Projects: Lidded Box with Ebony Insert, Natural Edge Bowl, and Closed Bowl with Turquoise inlay. Cost will be $45 for GAW members. Check with Ron Britton to see if there are any seats left in any of the classes, and pay Ron if you would like to attend. AAW 25th Anniversary Symposium The AAW s 25th anniversary symposium will be held in Saint Paul, MN. There is an outstanding slate of demonstrators and panelists, so if you are a member, please consider attending. Early registration is over, but you can still register. GAW Club Picnic The GAW club picnic has been scheduled for August 6th at Danny and Jane McCravy s. Food will be catered. It will be similar to previous years and should be fun.
