1 Inside This Issue President s Message 1 Tips & Hints 2 Demonstrations, Events 3 Instant Gallery Photos 3 Unicoi Symposium 5 Ga National Fair 11 Video Tape Library 13 Woodturning Instructors 13 Woodturning Schools 13 Contact Information 14 This month s demonstrator is Jim Duxbury and he will demonstrate how to make kaleidoscopes. Jim has an inquisitive mind and his interests tend toward the mechanical and invention. This led him into the sheet metal and HVAC trades. He now resides in Graham, North Carolina and makes a variety of turned objects from small bottle stoppers to bowls, bud vases, trays, furniture, kaleidoscopes, turned wooden hats, and even a working Foucault pendulum (and maybe he ll explain what this is). Jim is the inventor of the Resp-O- Rator, the first mouthpiece respirator ever designed to function on a full time basis. He retired in 1996 and has since obtained two US Patents with a third one in progress. This should be a very interesting demonstration, so be sure to be there. President s Message record the association s history and recount the role of the AAW and its members in the evolution of woodturning as an art form, the growth of turning as an amateur activity, and the place of woodturning in the context of American and international craft and culture. The book will emphasize personal stories by diverse voices and be illustrated throughout with photographs of turned work, woodturners, and turning events. It will be an amazing collector s item for every AAW member. If you re interested in a copy, please visit the AAW web site. The AAW s 25th anniversary symposium will be held in Saint Paul, MN. There is an outstanding slate of demonstrators and panelists and it is expected to be very well attended, so if you are a member, please consider attending and make your reservations early. Points of Interest Upcoming Demonstrators 2010 Georgia National Fair December Holiday Meeting In AAW news, the search for a new Executive Director is nearing completion the board should be making their selection very soon. In addition, the committee established to revise the AAW bylaws is making progress and plans to complete their revisions soon. Once the bylaws have been revised, they will be submitted to the membership for approval. So if you have suggestions regarding revisions please them to aawbylaws@gmail.com. To celebrate its anniversary, the AAW is creating a 25th anniversary book, Woodturning Today: A Dramatic Evolution. The book will The club picnic at Danny McCravy s house was a big success again this year. The 40 plus people who attended all had a great time. There were three mini-lathes for those that wanted to turn, door prizes for everyone and lots of BBQ with all the fixings. This year s woodturning display at the 2010 Georgia National Fair was very popular. You ll find photos of the display later in this newsletter. The photos will give you some idea of the crowd on Saturday, October 16th. According to fair officials, fair attendance was up about 17% over last year. We certainly noticed an
2 Page 2 Presidents Letter Cont. increase in the number of people passing by the turning exhibit as well as throughout the grounds. The quality of the work increases every year and this year was no exception. The GAW was well represented in the number of pieces our members contributed as well as in the ribbons awarded. Several pieces sold, among them pieces by: Peggy Schmid, Daryl Ruekert and Jim Hutchinson. For the turning demonstrations the Columbus club supplied a Oneway SD lathe and Bibb Tool and Cutter of Macon supplied a Powermatic 3520 thanks to the efforts of Terry Smith. The display attracted attention and a large array of pieces from tops to bowls were produced. In addition, Terry spent considerable time at the fair demonstrating and overseeing the lathes. Thanks Terry! Thanks to those that acted as docents. The participating clubs had many if not most of the slots filled. Those with pieces at the fair should plan to pick them up Tuesday and Wednesday, October 19th and 20th. Last, but not least, December is our holiday social and we re planning on a gift exchange again, so be thinking of something you can contribute. We suggest a small turned item that will fit in a small brown paper bag. That way others, when they make their choice for a gift will not know whose work they are selecting. If you bring a guest, please bring an item for them so they can participate. That s all for this month. See you Thursday! Holders for Small Woodturning Tools The smaller sized Woodturning Tools often present a problem for storing when not in use, the solution I have adopted uses short lengths (to suit the Tool being stored) of 22 mm diameter Plastic Pipe (available from any DIY Store) held in the Plastic Snap in Support Clips designed for use with the Pipe. With these Clips screwed to a backboard (or any convenient surface), at a suitable distance apart all my smaller Turning Tools are readily to hand and neatly stored. The use of the Plastic Piping also ensures that no damage can occur to the Tools when removing and replacing them from the holder. Tips & Hints On-line Wood Turning Articles There are many many articles out on the web that you can read to help almost any aspect of your wood turning, your tools, or your shop. Check out the following link to Woodturning Online for a number of good articles. Good articles here. I also found a lot of good tips, organized by category e.g. General, tools, equipment, finishes, etc. on Steven D. Russell s site here. If you have a tip that will make turning easier, more fun, safer, or make our pieces turn out better why not share it. Just send it to me the newsletter editor at editor@gawoodturner.org By having the length of Pipe of a sufficient length, 6 to 8 cm depending on the type of Tool, the business end of each Tool will be visible and therefore make identification and selection that much easier. Newsletter input request We are always soliciting members input (Articles, News items, suggestions, etc.) to make this newsletter better serve GAW members. Woodturning articles, tips, product reviews and any other content that you have to share. Send ideas / content to editor@gawoodturner.org

Thanks to the continued leadership of Harvey Meyer, Steve Pritchard, their spouses, Nick Cook, John Rudert and many other volunteers it was a great event. The pieces submitted to the instant gallery were fantastic and the featured turners were full of great information to help us grow our skills. A sampling of the many fine pieces and of the sessions follow.

As usual the banquet dinner was very good and auction was a big success, raising thousands for scholarships in the coming years. Tim Ryan our auctioneer kept the crowd entertained and enjoying themselves while they bid on the great items, helping the GAW. Sunday morning walk in the woods with Dave Barriger.
11 Page Georgia National Fair, Perry Georgia The Georgia National Fair was a great success again this year. Many of our members that entered pieces won awards. As you can see below everyone s work got a lot of good exposure with the crowds. This has become a great show. And it is getting better each year. If you have not entered any pieces yet, consider doing so next year. It is well worth it, and if you volunteer as a docent you will also receive free entry into the fair and a great parking place right in front of the building. It s a great deal all around.
