1 M o n t h l y M e e t i n g Saturday, July 13, 2013, 8:30 to 2:30 at Bryant HS. Our July meeting day program is Willie Simmons. I'd call him a productive craft turner. He turns both on spec and commission. I understand that he's been at this long enough to have mentored Kurt Hertzog, who stops in on Willie every time he travels through Southwest Virginia. Most recently, Willie demonstrated at Tampa at the National Symposium. Willie is a member of Smith Mountain Lake, and it the President or Programs Director (maybe both or has been) of the Blue Ridge Club. "I will show the process of making a stool and weaving a seat. This is a spindle project so I will give tips and tricks for the roughing gouge, skew, and gouge. Rungs will be sized and ready to use right off the lathe. After turning the parts we will drill holes for rungs and assemble. The seat weaving process also will be covered. There will be plenty of time during demo for questions. The second part of the demo will cover small projects that I turn for sale at shows. Bottle stoppers, ice cream scoops, seam rippers, peppermills, grinders, eggs, balls, etc. There will be a hint or two in this part for everyone. I also will discuss the process for glue ups to get C a p i t a l A r e a W o o d t u r n e r s P r e s i d e n t s M e s s a g e Bring your camera's, notebooks, questions and appetites. Lunch is available for purchase as usual from Primo s. Same menu as always for $8.00. Can't wait to see you all there this Saturday. Happy and safe turning. Bob an interesting finished product. Again lots of time will be allowed for questions." Frank Jessup In this issue: Advertisements 5 Monthly Meeting 1 President s Message 1 CAW Activities 2013/ About our Members 4 [ Page 1 ]
2 C A W A c t i v i t i e s C a l e n d a r f o r / The below calendar remains a work in progress but there are some pretty significant changes and 2014 has been added since this calendar was last issued. Notes: Skill Enhancement/Mentoring will be the favored listing for locally lead studio activity. Some days might well be changed to Skill Enhancement Workshops (SEW) by notable or professional demonstrators before they happen. Expect additions and changes to the 2014 schedule. Currently, all professional demonstrations for 2014 will have workshop(s). However, some days will be listed as to be determined if there is an ongoing effort to share with other local clubs. Late August events are not scheduled due to staff vacations Workshops will be open for registry and deposit starting November 10 (the day after the last program in 2013). Mark your calendar for that date as I expect some of these to fill awfully fast Frank Jessup July 12 July 13 (CAW Meeting) July 30 August 8/9 August 10 (CAW Meeting) August 14 September 11 September 12/13 September 14 (CAW Meeting) September 27/28 October 9 October 12(CAW Meeting) October 21 November 8 November 9 (CAW Meeting) November 13 November 26 December 11 December Holiday Party 2013 Willie Simmons lead workshop Willie Simmons Demonstration Nick Cook lead two day workshop Nick Cook Demonstration Joe Ruminski lead two day workshop Joe Ruminski Demonstration Two day Workshop lead by Beth Ireland David Reed Smith Demonstration Mark Gardner lead workshop Workshop lead by Mike Chandler Mike Chandler Demonstration (Gerry Headley lead for Party) 1) To register for a Skill Enhancement session, reserve a lathe, or identify what you need help with, Frank Jessup: woodatf16@cox.net and CA Savoy: cadjsavoy@cox.net 2) If you sign -up for a professional workshop you must make a non -refundable $25 deposit by check, made out to Frank Jessup, and mailed to 8001 Scott Place, Alexandria, VA ) Additional details on Skill Enhancement Workshops will be provided via club wide .
