4 December 2003 Page 4 About Our Members by Phil Brown Tom Boley has been accepted by Artisans United to display turned wood in their craft shop at the Packard Center in Annandale, VA. Since the shop is operated on a cooperative basis, he incurs an obligation to spend time there on duty in the shop. A new experience for Tom. Phil Brown has one piece in the juried exhibit, Craft Forms 2003, at the Wayne Art Center in Wayne, PA, December 6, January 21, Other turners represented in the exhibit include Cindy Drozda and Max Krimmel. On the October weekend, Phil joined David Fry in demonstrating wood turning to the public in the Sansar booth at the Bethesda Row Arts Festival. Bill Hardy has been recovering well from his bypass operation in September, with the exception of some fluid around the lung for which he is under the care of a pulmonary specialist. This is not unusual or serious, just frustrating. He still can't lift large bowl blanks, but has been turning lots of small stuff and will be pushing the limit on the bowls after the first of the year (gotta get to the hurricane stash before it checks). He plans to do his annual home show in Great Falls on December 5, 6 and 7. It will be at the home of Laura Nichols, a potter, at 438 Riverbend Road, Great Falls, VA. It's a fun weekend with lots of good food in the country kitchen and about 12 different artists. Jim Marstall participated in an Arts, Crafts, & Hobbies Fair at The Boeing Company offices in Crystal City on Thursday, November 13th as part of a Employee Enrichment Day Program. Jim displayed some of his turnings and described the use of turning tools and techniques to produce items from large bowls to small ornaments. Mike McInerney, Treasurer, reported that we have 225 members. Seems that about 160 people renew each year, and then over the year new members bring the total up to over 200. Dues for next year are $20. CA Savoy s next Bowl Classes at the Woodcraft store in Springfield, Va. will be on Thursdays January 15, February 12 and March 11, Turn a bowl while learning wood selection, mounting techniques, finishing and the proper use of the side ground bowl gouge. Call the store at for details and to register. John Trant will be selling his bowls at the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival, Maryland State Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg MD on December 12-14, Tell others about your woodturning activities in the CAW Newsletter. Send your information by the third week of the month to Phil Brown, 7807 Hamilton Spring Road, Bethesda, MD Phone and fax: philtbrown@greenbelt.com Other Items 1. One-third through its display period at Del Ray Artisans, Washington Wood 2003 experienced sale of seven pieces totaling $1,755. All of these sold pieces were priced under $600, as were two-thirds of the wood pieces in the exhibit. Two-dimensional work by Del Ray members hangs on the walls, and three of those painting had sold for a total of $2,225. So combined sales through November 14 th were $3,980. Jeff Dahlquist, the awards judge on opening night November 7 th, encountered a real challenge in selecting award pieces from a wide array of excellent work. David Veatch received Best In Show for his curly koa and maple desk. The strong showing of turned wood contributed to John Noffsinger receiving Best Design for his carved and inlaid box elder vessel. And Phil Brown received Best Craftsmanship for his 16" flared cherry vessel. Washington Wood 2003 is the largest WWG exhibit ever with 72 pieces from 29 members. Prices range from $35 up to $10,000, averaging $824 each, and with a total retail value of $59,307. Eight pieces were especially dear to their makers and were not for sale, but were exhibited on the condition that the maker would make a duplicate for a buyer. Wood turning had a strong presence as vessels, sculpture, and spindle work from 14 turners. Ten of these turners are also members of Capital Area Woodturners. Del Ray Artisans members displayed 23 paintings and photographs with a total retail value of $6, Members of Chesapeake Woodturners will again be displaying and selling their work, and demonstrating to the public at Behnke s nursery over the first two weekends of December. They have found this opportunity to be fun and profitable for those participating. 3. Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, in Gatlinburg, TN, now has a spring 04 class schedule that includes five woodturning classes. One-week workshops include Woodturning: Start to Finish by Lyle Jamieson March 14-20, Woodturning: Artistic & Functional by Ray Key from March 21-27, Striving for the Ultimate Form by Ray Key from March 28-April 3, Finer Points of Woodturning by Mike Mahoney from April 4-10, and Woodturning: A canvas of Good Form by Jackues Vesery from April 11-17, Registration is $475 and on-campus housing with meals is between $245 and $580 depending upon the room you choose. For more details or a catalog contact Arrowmont at or by phone at

Drawn from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection of studio furniture, this exhibition highlights works that are for the most part functional and contemporary. There will be chairs, stools, clocks, desks, tables, cabinets, music stands, benches, storage chests, etc in the exhibit. Education Specialist, Katie Murphy, would like to see some of the different techniques and materials used by furniture artists demonstrated to the public in the same manner as we demonstrated wood turning in This could include joints, joining surfaces, surfacing, carving, steam bending, turning furniture parts, carving, discussion of woods, etc. A wood bench with vise and a lathe will be set up in the same room we used for turning last year. Most of the demonstrations must be hand work. No loud sounds like a router or table saw, and no strong chemical odors. Demonstrations will be on selected Wednesday and Sunday afternoons in April, May, June and July Please let us know soon that you are interested in demonstrating, on which day, and tell us what you would like to demonstrate. A demonstration schedule is being developed for publication. Contact either Temple Blackwood, Demonstration Coordinator, tblackwo@queenanne.org; or Phil Brown at or philtbrown@greenbelt.com. Most of this information and a list of objects to be displayed in the exhibition can be seen at: IN MEMORY OF PALMER SHARPLESS It has been almost a year since we lost Palmer Sharpless. In his memory, Mark Krick of Doylestown, PA has created a 6' 5" honey dipper (Palmer was about that tall and was well known for his honey dippers). This honey dipper will be on display at The Wood Turning Center in Philadelphia. Mark asks that anyone who was touched by Palmer in some way turn a honey dipper, split it in half and write a memory or thought about Palmer on it and send it to him. The idea here is that you keep half of the honey dipper in memory of Palmer and the other half would be on display. Whole honey dippers are also acceptable as well as other small turnings that you may deem appropriate. Mark would like to receive the dippers by Thanksgiving if at all possible. If you have questions, you can contact Mark at His home address is 169 Mechanic Street, Doylestown, PA Or via at citytoshore@yahoo.com. I hope that everyone who knew Palmer will participate in this memorial. I've seen the honey dipper Mark turned and it looks great. I would like to clarify one thing. The "memory" turning need not be a honey dipper. It could be some other small turning such as a small bowl or one of Palmer's circuses. The thought or memory is what really counts. Bob Rosand (AAW Board of Directors; Regional POC for Northeastern AAW chapters; and CAW Demonstrator)
