1 PBCW Volume 3, Issue 5 May, 2005 By: Mike Mills, Secretary Introduction - Brian welcomed everyone to the meeting. We had five guests this month: of Woodland Park CO and Gary (??) from Georgia Bob Fletcher and Jim Banks of Boca Raton Ron Johnson of Jupiter Marilynne Strazzeri of Delray Beach. Brian reminded the members that our use of the Okeeheelee Nature Center does not cost us anything; rather we volunteer to staff the front desk on our normal meeting days. Members are expected to put in a four-hour shift about once every 18 months. Please let Tim Carter what would be a good month for you to serve otherwise he will assign you a spot when your turn comes up. Members were reminded not to bring food or drink (except water) into the meeting room. Also, do not use the rear exit when going to the restrooms. The purpose of the club is to promote the craft of woodturning. We do this by educating the public and educating our members. We are a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners, and all members of PBCW are encouraged to join the AAW. Minutes from Previous Meeting - The minutes were not mentioned. Treasurer s report Bernard Caesar - Treasurer. The information was reported Minutes From The April Meeting in an message to the board. As of yesterday, our balances were: Otto Dundr = $2,474.00, Old PBCW = $2, and New PBCW = $3, Committee reports Membership (Tim Carter - Membership Committee Chair) Please let Tim know if you have not gotten your nametag the ones for recent new members are available. Wearing your nametag makes it easier to get to know one another at meetings. We have T-shirts available for $12 and a few long-sleeve denim shirts for $35. An order for new items is pending. Shows (Bob Brulotte - Show Committee Chair) The spring Mounts Botanical Gardens Show is this weekend and there is a show at the Palm Beach Convention Center on May 20 th to 22 nd. The Gold Coast Woodturners are sponsoring John Mascoll on May 14 and 15 at Woodcraft in Pompano Beach. Library (Bill Kruger - Librarian) Bill is about 1/3 of the way into the process of converting our VHS library to DVD s. He asked for oldstyle jewel cases for storing them, and Mike Mills volunteered to provide a large number of them We have about 150 books and videos in the library, plus a number of small lathes, chucks and other tools for the use of the members. If you know something that you think would be of general interest to the club, please let Bill know. Workshops (Carl Schneider) The South County workshops are held in Dave Friedman's shop in Boynton Beach on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The weekly workshops at Dave's garage give our members access to three mini lathes and two full-size lathes. They are also attended by "older" and experienced turners to assist and teach. If you are interested in participating in any of these workshops, please contact Carl Schneider. The North County workshops are usually held on one Saturday each month, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Al Gruntwagin s. Please call Al if you are interested in (Continued on page 3) PBCW Buys Four New Mini Lathes A few months ago the membership of the PBCW voted to purchase a new Vicmarc variable speed mini lathe and stand for $1000. Due to an offer received from the importer of Jet tools we have been able to acquire four new Jet variable speed mini lathes with stands for less than that amount. These new lathes will be used for demonstrations and workshops where they will replace our four aging Delta and Jet mini lathes. 2 Page 2 World Famous Christian Burchard to Demonstrate and Conduct Workshops in June On Saturday, June 25 one of the world s premiere woodturning artists will demonstrate at the Okeeheelee Nature Center. On the following two days he will conduct hands on training classes for five fortunate woodturners in Boynton Beach at Dave Friedman s shop. Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1955, Christian has been living in the United States since1978. Building on a foundation laid by a furniture makers apprenticeship in Germany in the middle seventies, he studied sculpture and drawing first at the Museum School in Boston and then at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver BC. In 1982 he and his wife, Micheline, opened Cold Mountain Studio in Southern Oregon. His early focus was on furniture and interiors, but gradually shifted to woodturning and sculpture, moving between vessel oriented forms and sculptural turning. His work has been included in most of the major turning related exhibits of the last ten years and is exhibited widely throughout the US. His pieces are part of many public and private collections. He is also sought after as a teacher and demonstrator at craft schools and conferences and related turning events. He currently resides with his two sons at the outskirts of Ashland,Oregon. By the late 1980s, Christian Burchard had obviously mastered the lathe turned vessel form, but he was also exploring the potential of totemic sculpture with works such as Gift for an Unknown King. The bowl form, with its history of utility and ceremony, was elevated in sculptural pieces such as A Nest For Raven and works from his Chalice Series. Burchard remains a serious sculptor, exploring the emotional potential of dynamic form. Yet the artist has proven that he can leave the psychological burden of serious sculpture for an adventure in fun. The resulting works, suggestive of dysfunctional vehicles included Jason, Mad Max, George and Running with the Bulls. Some of my works exists solely because they are a lot of fun to make, he says of these works, which combine whimsy and surrealist imagery. Burchard s material of choice is Pacific madrone burl, a wood which changes as it dries, forcing him to step back from the work and relinquish control for a short time while letting the wood find it s own shape. In fact, the material resists all attempts to dry it evenly, warping and cracking and become very hard once dry, making it almost useless in regard to traditional woodwork. Burchard works with the wood s particular character. By turning the forms very thin, the vessels develop wonderful gestural forms without splitting, he can also utilize the dramatic effect of cracking by leaving the forms thicker. In Pacific madrone burl, Burchard found a material that had all of the freedom he sought in life, which was ideal for his self-expression. Freshly cut madrone, makes woodturning much more enjoyable for Burchard than working with any other material. The artist s most successful work to date has been his Basket Series, a series that grew out of the unique quality of this wood. The baskets take their inspiration first from an exploration of the material that I use, Burchard says of the series, which expanded into other forms such as gourds. Madrone has so much a mind of its own that you have to stay very simple. The series is also influenced by Native American baskets and the glass art of Dale Chihuly. I think their beauty lies in their simplicity, textures and gentleness of form. The sign up form for this event is on page three of this newsletter PBCW Events Schedule May: 28- General Meeting, Okeeheelee June: 25- Christian Burchard, Demonstration, Okeeheelee Nature Center, WPB Christian Burchard, Hands On Workshop, Boynton Beach July: 23 General Meeting, Okeeheelee August: 27- General Meeting, Okeeheelee September: 24- Dick Sing, Demonstration, Okeeheelee Nature Center, WPB Dick Sing, Hands On Workshop, Boynton Beach October: 2 Okeeheelee Nature Center Craft Show 22- General Meeting, Okeeheelee November: 5-6 Mounts Fall Flower Show and Sale, Mounts Botanical Garden, WPB 26 General Meeting, Okeeheelee December: 17 General Meeting, Okeeheelee

3 Page 3 (Continued from page 1) April Minutes attending. Programs (Bud Escher - Programs Committee Chair) The next major presenter will be Christian Burchard on June 25 th through 27 th. The cost of the Saturday presentation will be $35, and the Sunday and Monday hands-on sessions will be $125. At this point there will be no lunch provided. Education (Bill Jones) The Palm Beach County 4H organization has asked for a demonstration on July 20th at the Mounts Botanical Gardens. It will be a 2-hour session and Bill needs 4 or 5 members to demonstrate / teach basic turning. We have four Jet mini-lathes that are used for workshops and demonstrations. Wood (Ralph Nettles - Wood Chairman) This month Ralph was participating in the Mounts show, so there was no auction of wood. New Business John Buso - the Minwax folks are doing a promotion around doing good things with wood, so we should nominate the club and/or Bill Jones for our outreach efforts. Last time we got a few cases of their products that we auctioned off at a meeting. Tim Carter mentioned having good results using Minwax Antique Oil to wet sand and prep wood, then using polyurethane over it. The AAW is offering insurance through the American Crafts Council for semi-professional and professional turners. It covers their shops and tools, which are usually not covered under homeowners policies. The benefits of AAW membership include the quarterly magazine, annual directory, a line of merchandise and instructional videos, plus the annual symposium. For the cost, it is a good bargain. The dues for the Palm Beach County Woodturners have been $25 for individuals and $35 for families. The board has proposed a small increase for next year. Bring Back Raffle - The winner of each month s raffle gets a piece made by a member. In return the winner makes a piece to bring back the next month. Last month Jim Davis won the raffle and this month Mike Mills won it. Jim was not present, so he will bring the item next month and Mike will bring or send a piece he made. Demonstration The demonstration was a video from John Jordan. 5 Page 5 WOODTURNING GUIDELINES FOR BEGINNERS This brief guideline is for people beginning the adventure of woodturning. It is meant to include the basic information needed to make the initial experience easier and more enjoyable. The following aspects of woodturning are included in this guideline: Safety Sharpening the tools Wood grain vs. cutting Using proper tools Design Lathes Safety: 1. Read the safety instructions for all your equipment. 2. Always wear a face shield when turning irregularly shaped or large diameter wood especially containing bark. After gaining experience and when using smaller diameter wood at least wear eye protection. 3. Do not use wood that is badly cracked and remove any loose bark 4. Mount the wood properly and periodically check if it remains securely held between centers or in the chuck. 5. Place the tool rest as close to the wood as practical. 6. Before turning on the lathe make sure the speed is set low enough, the wood is sufficiently balanced and the tool rest is clear. Then back out of the way until it is spinning correctly. 7. Always place the tool on the rest before it touches the wood. 8. If using a chuck avoid the possibility of the tool rest pivoting into it and avoid cutting the wood close to and towards the chuck. 9. Do not wear long loose fitting sleeves that can get caught in the spinning wood. 10. Use dust protection and collection equipment when sanding. Even inert dust and especially allergy related and toxic dust can affect you immediately or accumulatively. 11. Finishing fluids should be used in a ventilated area to avoid breathing any toxic fumes. Sharpening the Tools: Sharp tools are very important to achieve the desired results safely and with the most enjoyment. Sharp tools properly used will cut faster with less effort and will reduce the amount of sanding required. For sharpening I recommend a 1725 RPM grinder with 8 inch aluminum oxide wheels, one 60 grit for shaping and the other 100 or 120 grit for sharpening. This can be purchased from Woodcraft for less than $100 and a wheel dressing stick for $10. For most people it takes longer to acquire hand-held, repeatable sharpen skills than it does to learn to turn wood. Therefore, I recommend a Oneway Wolverine sharpening jig ($90), a Vari-grind jig ($50) and a Skew jig ($27). These jigs are made by the Oneway Company and are sold in most woodturning catalogs. They come with instructions. Wood Grain vs. Cutting: Turning tools are typically used like planes or scrapers. Wood planed with the grain will be smooth. Wood planed against the grain will be rough or even torn out. The angle of the tool edge relative to the grain and the use of the bevel for control will affect the finished surface. The details of this aspect are best found in the referenced books and tapes. Using The Proper Tools: Many tools can be used in different ways for different purposes. Roughing gouges, spindle gouges, and skew chisels are primarily used for spindle or end grain turning. Bowl gouges are primarily used for bowls either end or side grain. Scrapers and parting tools are used for both. There are also many specialty tools. After you learn the primary use of all of these tools you will find them useful in other ways. The main thing to remember is a tool is a shaft with an edge. The strength of the shaft, the shape of the edge and where you need to cut will determine what tool you can use for the best results. I recommend the following starter set of tools made of high-speed steel: ¾ Roughing Gouge 3/8 Spindle Gouge 3 4 Skew Chisel 1/8 Parting Tool ½ Bowl Gouge ¾ Square End Scraper ¾ Round or Domed Scraper Design: Basic design comes from observing other objects made of wood, glass or pottery or even objects in nature. It will help you to analyze what shapes and combination of shapes you like and don t like and determine why. Once you have this knowledge you can make your own designs. In the beginning don t be afraid to copy someone else s design. Eventually you may create your own design and be pleased if someone copies yours. Lathe: The choice of a lathe is very subjective. One might not want to spend allot of money initially because one might not know if they will continue woodturning. I guess 90% of the people who try woodturning continue for many years. If you do decide to quit you can sell the lathe for at least 60% of the original cost. If you buy a used lathe you can probably sell it many years later for what you paid. There are lathes that can turn objects from 10 to 36 in diameter and from 12 to 40 long. What size lathe you buy will depend on how much you can afford and somewhat on the size objects you eventually intend to turn. Even if you do not intend to make large objects a heavier better quality lathe will be an advantage. Prices of adequate to excellent lathes range from $300. to $6000 if new. However, there are some lathes that are just not adequate in quality. Magazine articles and club members can give you more details.
