Twenty six members and two guests - Wayne Keifer from Minnesota and Mike Kemp from Boynton Beach - attended the meeting. President Carl reminded us of our obligations to the Nature Center, there is to be NO FOOD in the Meeting Room and we should NOT use the Back Door as an exit to the restrooms. President Carl announced that the Board of Directors meeting would be held immediately following the general meeting. The Secretary s report was accepted as published in the newsletter and on our web site with the following correction: the new incoming Secretary is Bud Escher and the new Treasurer is Richard Chesler (the names were reversed in the published newsletter masthead). There was no Treasurer s report as the Treasurer was absent. Committee reports: Membership: Bob Brulotte spoke on behalf of the IWCS meeting that is scheduled for February Program: John Buso reported that Trent Bosch will present a demonstration and two days of hands on classes for the membership on March 1-3, A brochure is included later in this newsletter. Remember that the cutoff date to register for the hands on is January 25, Show: Bob Brulotte, reported that the next event is the April Show at Mounts Botanical Gardens. The club recently purchased one of his tools for our tool library. Among the many features of this tool is a locking collar for the tool rest post. This collar allows you reset the position of the cutting tool height to on center even if you remove and then replace the tool into the tool rest. Brian had previously shown us a prototype of this tool and has made a number of refinements in- cluding a laser unit that works from a 3 volt power supply rather than batteries. Workshop: The workshop program is closed for the holidays. Dave Friedman will be away for a couple of months, thus the workshops normally held in his workshop will be postponed until his return. The Saturday workshop at Al Gruntwagin s will resume soon. Please December Meeting Minutes continued from page 1 check the club calendar for the schedule. Wood: A wood auction was held at the break and over $ was collected for the club. This was a great wood auction with many kinds of wood available (Walnut, Apple, Butternut) and excellent member participation. Meet and Eat: Our annual Meet and Eat is scheduled for March 22, 2003 at Okeeheelee Park in the Osceola Pavilion. The Price will be $15.00 per person ($30.00 per couple). The bill of fare will include ribs and chicken, side dishes and drinks. Bill Kruger needs a final count of persons attending by the February Meeting. A sign up sheet was included in the last newsletter. Bring Back Raffle: Francis Motes brought in a Stemmed Goblet turned from Holly as his prize for today s winner Jack Sheibenberger. Good and Welfare: The club received a $ donation from Mrs. Joan Virgin as a Thank You for the tool auction held at the November Meeting. The Board of Directors had previously decided not to take any commission or fees in conjunction with the tool auction. President Carl indicated that he would send a Thank You note to Mrs. Virgin. by George Z. Miller, Secretary We had good participation in our December Gallery with 19 items displayed. Mike Stockwell brought a very large aluminum gouge handle. It appeared to be 3 feet long and 2 inches in diameter at its narrowest. Ralph Nettles presented a small Acacia bowl that was finished with tung oil and wax. Louis Ziegler brought an 8 inch hollow form turned from Acacia finished with several coats of wipe on polyurethane but that did not provide the luster that he wanted so he added two coats of lacquer. Jim Davis presented a 9 inch Eucalyptus bowl, a Hackelberry bowl and a Bubinga charger that his wife desired for her table. The Hackelberry bowl was finished with 10 December 2002 Show and Tell Gallery coats of spray urethane bur Jim said that he thought that it still needed some more work. Wayne Keiter brought a beautiful bowl turned from a Swamp Willow Gall. This gall is really a form of tree cancer where hundreds of branches try to grow simultaneously from the same location. The tree can not support all this growth so the branches all die but the gall that remains is full of figure. He also brought a Rosewood bowl that had been in his shop in Minnesota for some years, this aging process produced a very interesting color variation. His final two items were a bowl made from a Weedtree (I didn t get the species) and a flat plate turned from apple wood. He indicated that he liked apple for natural edge turnings because if the wood is cut when the tree is dormant the cambium layer holds the bark and you don t need to use as much CA glue. Carl Schneider brought a Mahogany burl bowl whose rim was carved in the shape of a rope. He also brought two boxes turned in the shape of acorns. The larger of the two (3 inches long and 2 ½ inches in diameter) had a Mango bottom and a Honduras Mahogany top that had been carved and finished in Danish Oil. The smaller acorn box (1.5 inches by 1.25 inches) was a Maple bottom with a Mahogany top also finished with Danish Oil. Both boxes had tight fitting lids so that they would stay together when set down. Carl also made a stand to display the smaller acorn. It was carved in the shape of an Oak Leaf ( 2.5 inches high by 5 inches long) complete with veins on a small pedestal. Gerhard Schwenke brought a Mahogany hollow form and a flat thin natural edge bowl. He displayed 8 small boxes of various shapes all with threaded lids. He commented that he had learned a technique at the Florida Symposium that now allows him to thread almost any kind of wood. Previously he felt that threading worked best only on few species. His final two items were small wooden hats in the Johannes Michelsen style.

Moving beyond the traditional vessel forms to include surface decoration, texture and color to express an artistic ideal and to convey deeper meaning through their works they have pioneered and developed many new techniques. Trent s bread and butter business is making practical bowls. Trent makes hundreds of bowls each year. Yet in spite of the volume of these bowls produced Trent finds ways to make each one unique. Cost for the demo is $35 per attendee. Cost for the hands-on sessions is $125. The deadline to sign up for the hands on sessions in January 25. A sign up form is included in this newsletter. Treadle Lathe Project Nears Completion The club s treadle lathe project begun in August with the purchase of an antique lathe is nearing a successful conclusion. The purchase of an antique flywheel by George Miller makes possible the final step in restoration of this piece of woodturning history. Antique flywheel purchased on Ebay by George Miller. George has taken charge of the process of modifying the flywheel to make it fit the crankshaft previously built for the machine. The treadle hook and connecting hardware built by Brian Rosencrantz and Mike Stockwell are also ready for use. Along with the frame built by Dave Friedman the hardware by Richard Waterbury and the crankshaft by Jim Forrler, Mike Stockwell and Brian Rosencrantz, the lathe cleaned and painted by Richard Chesler represents a true club collaborative project. Dues Reminder Members are reminded that membership dues of $25 for individuals and $35 for families were due to be paid in December. Dues represent the greatest percentage of the club s yearly funding. Those funds are used to purchase materials for the club library, print and mail club materials, maintain the website and finance club functions such as demonstrations. Every year at this time Terry takes his own time to assemble representative pieces from members of the to create a display in the crafts section of the Fair. The works always receive great praise and many awards. The Fair will run from February 28 through March 9 at the St. Lucie County Fairgrounds in Ft. Pierce. If you are interested in having your work displayed bring samples to the next meeting next meeting. Terry will pick up pieces from members at the January meeting and return them at the Meet and Eat picnic in March. Works on display will not be available for sale at the Fair. However, Terry will make it possible for interested customers to get in touch with you so that you can sell the pieces directly to them. Page 5 Pres. Carl A Winner Carl Schneider s pierced Mahogany Christmas tree ornament which won the contest to represent the at the Florida Woodturning Symposium was a winner there too. Carl s ornament took third place in the statewide competition. It was later auctioned off for $55. Well done Carl! Turning at the Fair Lou Forrler and his son Big Jim will demonstrate woodturning at Yesteryear Village during the South Florida Fair January 18 to February 3. A perennial favorite of Fair goers Jim s homemade lathe will be in use again after a prolonged absence. Jim s lathe weighs 2700 lbs. and works through a truck transmission. It has a swing of more than three feet over the bed and the bed is over 6 feet between centers. Jim will be using the 1 bowl gouge featured in this month s gallery to make bowls and lots of shavings. Lou will demo on one or another of the six lathes always at Yesteryear Village and his wife Rena as always will provide support and good conversation. Two of the lathes on display at the Village date to Three others are of 1950 s vintage. Also included is a foot operated spring pole lathe built by Mitch Wolok. A lot of turning and a lot of talking will take place and a lot of fun will be had. Club members are invited to come out and share the fun. While this is not a club event it has always been a great recruitment event for the club. Club brochures will be available for interested spectators. Admission to Yesteryear Village is available at a reduced price for those not interested in attending the rest of the Fair.
