1 SOUTH FLORIDA WOODTURNERS GUILD A CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS APRIL 2008 NEWSLETTER VOL 21 NUMBER 4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hopefully everyone got the word about the April meeting date change. Maybe someday we will have a meeting place that is not affected by Spring Break, Winter Break, Summer Break or any of the other breaks observed by the school system. Until then I think our accommodations at Robert Morgan School are just right, especially now that we meet in the big shop area. If you haven t already made plans to attend the next annual picnic please do so right away. We need to let the caterer know how many folks to provide for. Another will be posted shortly with directions and other pertinent information. If you re not getting these s let me know. HUH!!!!! I suppose we need to discuss that at the meeting. See you there ---APRIL 10 7:00 PM Jack Guests: Randy Waldrep Gary Venema OLD BUSINESS Jack Skipper opened the meeting by speaking briefly about the workshop that was held at Waldo Collins residence. The meeting was attended by 20 members, give or take a few. Some new members attended the workshop and took advantage of having the use of a lathe, tools and having mentors present to help with their turning. Jack then explained the monthly bring back activity for the benefit of the new members present. NEW BUSINESS Next topic on the agenda was a discussion held concerning the upcoming Dade County Fair and Exposition which was beginning March 27 th this year. The guild plans on having a lathe there. Jack reiterated that he needs a list of those planning on attending the event. This will be primarily a demo opportunity as you would not be able to sell. Questions were asked as to exactly where we would be positioned. It became apparent that there was a general lack of interest in attending the event and Fred Stockhausen motioned that we forget it. The motion was then passed by vote. Ralph then began a brief discussion on the upcoming Native Plant Day at Elaine Gordon Enchanted Forest park, which was subsequently held Saturday, March 15 th. Three members from the guild, Ralph Callander, Jan Misitis and Joe Dion attended the event. Ralph brought two lathes, his mini-lathe and his 12 Delta lathe. Under a tree canopy and a tent that was provided at the park, they stayed the entire day, a learning experience for those who took the time to stop by and observe. Ralph handed out the guilds flyers and sold a few tops along with some carved mice that Jan sold. The SFWG annual picnic this year will be held on Saturday, April 19 th at the home of Tom Cross. We usually start at around 10 to 11:00am. The same caterer will provide the food that we enjoyed last year. There will be some lathes set up for those interested in turning. Yet another great opportunity for those new members to learn the techniques used for successful woodturning and sharpening your tools. Page - 1

2 David Freundlich spoke briefly, welcoming back previous member Gary Venema, who was the guild s 2 nd Vice President. Wood available; It was reported that there is some large Albizia near US1 and SW 132 nd St. Bill Lessard apparently still has some Norfolk Island Pine. Call just to make sure its still there. At the last monthly board meeting a possible charity project for the guild to participate in was discussed. The project would involve turning Christmas tree ornaments for a tree at some location. Julie Smith passed around a card for those board members who would be interested in participating on a committee for this project. A possible future demo could involve turning ornaments which many members have never done. Jack has brochures for the upcoming Georgia Symposium to be held April 25 th 27 th at the Georgia Mountains Center, Gainesville, Ga. The 22 nd annual National AAW Symposium will be held Friday, June 20 th to Sunday, June 22 nd in Richmond Virginia. spiral cuts. Be sure to check your thickness with calipers every once in awhile! Bob then uses a finer grit cut-saw sleeve on those same spiral grooves. After working those spiral grooves, he then rechucked the vessel and mounted it back on the lathe. For the final stage, Bob then uses the arbor-tech to define the edges of the spiral grooves. All that is left is some diligent hand-sanding to finalize the piece. He began with a previously turned vessel mounted on a chuck. First task was to draw 3 equidistant lines around the vessel. Bob then proceeded to draw a spiral grid on the vessel, drawing lines 1 to 3, 2 to 4, and 3 to 6 using a flexible paper guide to draw the lines. After drawing the grid, he used an arbor-tech to cut down the spiral grid lines that he drew. Then, using a Forstner tool, he cut finer grooves. A small cut saw sleeve was used to cut the initial groove, and then he a karger cut-saw sleeve to widen the Ending Balance (02/29/2008) 1, INSTANT GALLERY Bob Hazel Monkey puzzle bowl, turned by Cas Grabowski and finished by Bob..Joe Self Lidded mahogany bowl with African blackwood on the top. Joe Roig Two mahogany carved bowls, one of which was mahogany from Puerto Rico and had a density of 1.0 A maga wood vase with carvings, no finish. Carved vase copied from another artists work. Dan Ursino Small cherry bowl. Lynn Berk Various turned tops, using many different kinds of woods such as zebra wood, purple heart. Sean Callender Large mahogany carved tropical fish (two were depicted on the same carving). BRING BACK Jack Sawyer won the bring back which was a spalted mahogany vase finished in teak oil, turned by Dan Ursino. TREE OF THE MONTH Monkey puzzle (Araucaria araucana), is native to central Chile where the Araucani Indians live and is in the same family as Norfolk Island Pine. This endemic evergreen conifer species grows naturally in temperate rainforests of south central Chile and adjacent areas in Argentina, reaching up to 2 m in diameter and 50 m in height, and may live for over 1,000 years. It is named because the prickly, tangled branches would be difficult and painful for a monkey to climb. Fossil evidence indicates that ancestral araucaria forests resembling the present-day monkey puzzle date back to the age of dinosaurs. In fact, it has been suggested that the tree's armor of daggerlike leaves was designed to discourage enormous South American herbivorous dinosaurs, such as Argentinosaurus. A close-up view would show the dense, sharp-pointed leaves of the monkey puzzle tree. This species does not grow well in southern California, but forms beautiful specimen trees in the Pacific northwest and England. An ancestral species formed extensive forests in Europe during the Jurassic Period, about 150 million years ago. The tree forms characteristic forests, and is valued for its uniqueness and natural beauty, providing important tourism and recreational opportunities. For these reasons, it is the emblem of a number of national parks and provinces in both Chile and Argentina. Due to its high ornamental value, it is cultivated in gardens of Europe and America. A. araucana is also used to reconstruct climatic conditions by measuring the growth rings which may go back hundreds of years. MENTORS: updated 11/2006 Members who are happy to assist beginners.
